Windows 11 Pro Features Explained: BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, and More

Windows 11 Pro adds encryption, remote-hosting, virtualization, and device-management features. Find out which ones matter and what they require.

Windows 11 Pro adds business and power-user features to Windows 11, including BitLocker drive encryption, the ability to host Remote Desktop sessions, Hyper-V virtual machines, Windows Sandbox, and options for joining and managing organizational devices. Whether those additions matter depends on what you need to do: Home can still connect to another PC through Remote Desktop, for example, but it cannot host incoming Remote Desktop sessions.

What does Windows 11 Pro include?

Pro’s main differences from Home are tools for device security, administration, virtualization, and remote access. Microsoft lists BitLocker, Active Directory domain join, Microsoft Entra join, hybrid join, and Assigned Access (kiosk mode) as supported in Pro. It also supports Client Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox, subject to their respective hardware and setup requirements.

Pro is not the same as Enterprise. Microsoft’s edition comparison marks AppLocker, Credential Guard, Always On VPN device tunnel, and BitLocker advanced management as unavailable in Pro. Those boundaries matter for organizations that require specific advanced controls; they are not a complete inventory of every capability an organization might configure.

Is BitLocker included in Windows 11 Pro?

Yes. Windows 11 Pro supports BitLocker, which encrypts drives to help protect stored data if a device or drive is lost or accessed outside normal Windows sign-in. Windows device encryption is an automatic configuration of BitLocker on eligible devices, not a separate encryption technology. Eligibility and whether encryption is enabled can vary, so do not assume every Windows 11 PC encrypts itself automatically.

Windows 11 Pro Upgrade, from Windows 11 Home (Digital Download)
  • Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
  • Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
  • Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
  • Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.

Plan for recovery as part of enabling encryption. The recovery-key backup route depends on how the device is set up: an unmanaged PC may use a Microsoft account, while a device joined to Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory Domain Services may use the organization’s directory. Make sure the recovery key is backed up somewhere you can access before you need it. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 removed earlier DMA and HSTI/Modern Standby prerequisites for device encryption, allowing more devices to qualify; this does not mean every device is eligible.

BitLocker To Go for removable drives

BitLocker To Go applies BitLocker protection to removable storage. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements specify that it requires a USB flash drive and is available in Pro and higher editions. You may already have suitable removable media; the requirement does not establish that you need to buy a new drive.

Can Windows 11 Pro host Remote Desktop?

Yes. Windows 11 Pro can accept incoming Remote Desktop connections, so you can control that PC from another device. Windows 11 Home can connect to a remote PC as a client, but cannot host incoming sessions.

For a connection to work, the host PC must be powered on and reachable, Remote Desktop must be enabled, the account must be authorized, and firewall rules must allow the connection. Microsoft cautions that enabling Remote Desktop opens a port on the PC, making it accessible to devices on the local network. Use trusted networks, a strong unique password, and Network Level Authentication when practical.

Connecting from outside your local network requires additional network configuration. Microsoft points to using a VPN or port forwarding; simply turning on Remote Desktop does not make the PC safely accessible from anywhere. Treat external access as a separate security and network setup rather than an automatic consequence of enabling the feature. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guidance explains the host and security considerations.

Does Windows 11 Pro have Hyper-V?

Yes. Client Hyper-V is available in Windows Pro and higher editions and lets you run virtual machines on a Windows PC. Microsoft’s requirements specify a processor with second-level address translation (SLAT) support. Check that the PC meets the hardware requirement before planning a Hyper-V setup.

A virtual machine is the better fit when you want a configurable environment whose operating system and contents can be maintained. Hyper-V is distinct from Windows Sandbox, which is designed to be temporary rather than a durable virtual machine.

What is Windows Sandbox, and how is it different from Hyper-V?

Windows Sandbox provides a lightweight, isolated Windows environment for tasks such as trying unfamiliar software or inspecting files. It uses hypervisor-based virtualization and is included with Pro, Enterprise, and Education, but is not supported in Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sandbox is disposable: closing it deletes the software, files, and state inside it. Windows 11 version 22H2 and later allow data to persist through restarts initiated inside the Sandbox, but that does not preserve the environment after you close it. Hyper-V is intended for virtual machines you want to configure and maintain; Sandbox is for temporary experiments.

Networking is enabled by default in Sandbox. Microsoft warns that this can expose an untrusted application to the internal network, so consider disabling networking through a Sandbox configuration file when the test does not need network access. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox documentation covers its behavior and configuration.

What administration features does Pro add?

Pro supports joining a PC to an Active Directory domain, Microsoft Entra ID, or a hybrid arrangement, as well as Assigned Access for kiosk-style use. These options are most useful when a workplace or organization needs devices connected to its identity and management environment, or when a PC should be limited to a specific experience.

Organizations that need controls such as AppLocker, Credential Guard, Always On VPN device tunnel, or BitLocker advanced management should verify their edition requirements: Microsoft’s feature matrix does not list these capabilities as available in Pro. Pro offers more administration and security options than Home, but it is not the top Windows edition.

Best Value

Is Windows 11 Pro worth it over Home?

Pro is worth considering when you have a specific need that Home does not meet. The clearest reasons are hosting Remote Desktop connections, using Client Hyper-V or Sandbox, enabling BitLocker through Pro’s edition support, or joining a work-managed domain or Microsoft Entra environment. If you only need to connect outward to another PC, Remote Desktop client use does not by itself require Pro.

Need What Pro provides Key consideration
Protect data at rest BitLocker support and BitLocker To Go Device encryption eligibility varies; arrange recovery-key backup.
Access your PC remotely Incoming Remote Desktop host capability Requires an enabled, reachable host, an authorized account, and suitable network and firewall configuration.
Run a maintained virtual machine Client Hyper-V Requires a processor with SLAT support.
Test something temporarily Windows Sandbox Available in Pro, Enterprise, and Education; contents are discarded when it closes.
Connect a PC to organizational identity Active Directory, Microsoft Entra, and hybrid join support Most relevant to work or managed-device scenarios.
Use advanced enterprise controls Not all such controls are included in Pro Microsoft’s edition matrix excludes AppLocker, Credential Guard, Always On VPN device tunnel, and BitLocker advanced management from Pro.

If none of these capabilities matches a real requirement, the Pro label alone is not a reason to upgrade. Current license pricing and upgrade terms vary and are not established here; check Microsoft’s current offer for your region before making a purchase decision.
