What Rust Compiler Settings Affect LLVM Optimization?

The Rust settings that shape LLVM optimization—and how to balance runtime speed, build time, binary size, and CPU compatibility.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Rust compiler settings that most directly shape LLVM optimization are -C opt-level, -C codegen-units, and -C lto. CPU and target-feature options determine which processor instructions may be used, while incremental compilation and vectorization controls affect related trade-offs. No setting guarantees a faster program: choose a configuration by measuring representative workloads and checking the CPUs and build environment where the result will run.

Which settings affect LLVM optimization?

Rust passes code-generation work to LLVM. These controls influence how aggressively LLVM optimizes, how much code it can consider at once, which instructions it may use, and how compilation time is spent. Their behavior is documented, but the performance outcome depends on the program and deployment target. See the rustc codegen options for the current option reference.

  • -C opt-level selects an optimization mode.
  • -C codegen-units controls how a crate is divided for code generation.
  • -C lto can widen optimization across crate boundaries.
  • -C target-cpu and -C target-feature affect processor-specific code generation.
  • Incremental compilation and vectorization options change compilation or optimization behavior.

What does opt-level do?

-C opt-level is the direct optimization-level setting. The rustc book documents these values:

Value Documented behavior
0 No optimizations; the default.
1 Basic optimizations.
2 Some optimizations.
3 All optimizations.
s Optimize for binary size.
z More aggressive size optimization; it can sometimes produce a larger binary than s.

-O is an alias for -C opt-level=3. These labels describe compiler modes, not a promise that a higher value will make every workload faster. Size-focused settings likewise do not guarantee a smaller executable for every program.

Optimization level also interacts with debug assertions: they are enabled automatically only at opt-level 0 unless explicitly controlled. Check the active Cargo profile when a command-line setting appears not to behave as expected.

How do codegen units affect build time and generated code?

-C codegen-units sets the maximum number of units into which a crate is divided for code generation. More units allow LLVM to work in parallel and may shorten compilation, but can result in slower generated code. One unit may improve generated-code performance while taking longer to compile.

The rustc book documents defaults of 16 units for non-incremental builds and 256 for incremental builds. These are defaults, not performance recommendations; confirm the effective profile and compiler options for your build.

Does LTO make Rust faster?

Link-time optimization (LTO) lets LLVM use whole-program analysis to optimize across crate boundaries, at the cost of longer linking. The rustc book describes fat LTO as operating across crates in the dependency graph. It describes thin LTO as substantially faster than fat LTO while achieving similar performance gains in its general comparison. Neither mode guarantees a particular speedup for an individual program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Without an explicit -C lto, rustc may use thin local LTO within the local crate across codegen units. This implicit local LTO is disabled when codegen-units=1 or opt-level=0. For an explicit LTO choice, compare runtime, clean build and link times, and artifact size on the actual project.

Why does incremental compilation change the trade-off?

-C incremental saves information that can be reused when recompiling, which can improve recompile times during development. The rustc book warns that incremental compilation inhibits certain optimizations, including by increasing codegen units, and does not recommend it for release builds.

Use incremental compilation when faster edit-build cycles matter; assess release settings separately when runtime performance or artifact size matters. In normal Cargo workflows, profile settings determine how compiler flags are passed, so inspect the active profile rather than assuming a standalone rustc command represents the project build.

How do CPU and target-feature settings affect the result?

-C target-cpu asks rustc to generate code for a particular processor. native selects the processor on the build host; generic means a minimal-feature modern LLVM target. A binary built with native is not automatically portable to other machines: it may rely on instructions the deployment CPU does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

-C target-feature explicitly enables or disables supported target features with forms such as +feature and -feature. Defaults depend on the target and CPU, and supported features vary. The Rust Reference’s code-generation documentation describes target-feature defaults and runtime detection through platform-specific standard-library macros.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

This is also a correctness and deployment concern, not just a speed setting. The rustc known-issues page warns that setting target features for one crate does not automatically rebuild the standard library or imported crates with those same features. Mismatches can create safety and ABI problems. Keep feature assumptions aligned across the code that depends on them, or use carefully isolated feature-specific functions with appropriate runtime checks.

Which advanced LLVM controls are worth changing?

The rustc book lists -C no-vectorize-loops and -C no-vectorize-slp, which disable LLVM loop and SLP vectorization. It also allows direct LLVM arguments with -C llvm-args and adding LLVM passes with -C passes.

These direct LLVM interfaces do not have the usual rustc command-line stability guarantees. Treat them as advanced, version-specific debugging or tuning controls—not routine project defaults—and validate them against the installed compiler. Disabling vectorization is not inherently an optimization; whether it helps depends on the workload.

Which adjacent settings are not optimization levels?

-C debuginfo changes the debugging information emitted in the artifact. -C strip removes debug information or symbols at link time; depending on the setting and platform, that can impair debugger use, backtraces, profiling, or crash reporting. Stripping is not meaningful security or obfuscation. -C panic selects panic behavior subject to target and crate-graph constraints. These options affect artifacts or runtime behavior, but should not be treated as a simple request for more LLVM optimization.

How should you choose and verify a configuration?

  1. Identify the actual build. Check rustc -Vv for compiler and target details, then inspect the active Cargo profile and its settings.
  2. Set a baseline. Start from the project’s existing profile rather than stacking optimization flags without knowing which options Cargo already passes.
  3. Change one factor at a time. Compare alternatives such as opt-level 3, a size-oriented level, LTO, or fewer codegen units, depending on the goal.
  4. Measure the relevant outcomes. Benchmark representative workloads and record runtime, clean and incremental build time (including link time), and executable or library size.
  5. Check deployment compatibility. Confirm the target CPU and feature assumptions across the crate graph, especially before using native or explicit target features.
  6. Retain diagnostics you need. Decide whether debug information and symbols are required for debugging, profiling, crash reports, or backtraces before stripping them.
  7. Revalidate version-sensitive options. Check the installed compiler’s rustc -C help and target CPU/feature lists before relying on target-dependent or LLVM-specific flags.

There is no universally best combination. Runtime speed, build speed, binary size, CPU compatibility, debuggability, and toolchain stability can pull in different directions; measure the priorities that matter for the particular program and deployment environment.
