Physical and digital Switch games are supported when compatible; playability and any graphics or performance gains depend on the individual title. Some games also have a free update or paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade, with benefits that vary by game.
Will your Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital games released for Nintendo Switch. To access a digital purchase, link the Nintendo Account that owns it and download the game to Switch 2. For a physical copy, insert its game card. In both cases, check the game’s compatibility status: not every title is supported or fully compatible.

Nintendo cautions that “some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2” because the systems use different hardware. See Nintendo’s answer to whether you can play Nintendo Switch games on Nintendo Switch 2 and its Switch and Switch 2 compatibility information for the current title-specific details.
Compatibility, performance and upgrades are separate questions
Backward compatibility is not one single guarantee. For a particular game, check three things independently:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Can it start and play? Nintendo’s compatibility information identifies titles with support limitations. Some games start but have in-game compatibility issues; Nintendo lists these separately in its list of Switch games with in-game issues on Switch 2.
- Does the original game benefit from the new hardware? A compatible Switch game may take advantage of Switch 2 hardware for improved graphics or faster loading. These are possible benefits, not a promise that every game will change. Nintendo says, “Performance improvements vary depending on the game.” See its Switch 2 features page.
- Is a separate update or upgrade available? Selected titles offer free updates or paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. Depending on the game, these may change image quality, frame rate, content, features or modes. They are title-specific; a paid upgrade is not a general requirement for playing compatible original Switch games. Nintendo notes that “the content of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games differs depending on the game” in its Switch 2 transfer guide.
What graphics and performance changes should you expect?
There is no universal resolution, frame-rate or loading-time improvement to apply to the Switch library as a whole. Nintendo describes better graphics and faster loading as possibilities for compatible games, and says the results vary by title. A console’s output capability is not proof that a particular backward-compatible game renders at a higher resolution or frame rate.
To judge a specific game’s upgrade, look for what Nintendo or its publisher says that update changes. An advertised improvement to image quality, frame rate or loading is different from a measured comparison under stated conditions. The official information cited here does not establish a system-wide benchmark or average uplift, so treat broad claims that all Switch games run faster or look sharper with caution.

How to check a game before buying or upgrading
- Search Nintendo’s compatibility information for the exact game title.
- Check the separate in-game issue list if the game is listed as starting on Switch 2. Starting successfully does not necessarily mean every feature works as intended.
- Look for a game-specific free update or Switch 2 Edition upgrade, and confirm exactly what it adds or improves before paying for it.
- For a third-party game or a feature not clearly covered by Nintendo’s listing, contact the publisher for title-specific compatibility details.
- Recheck the listing close to purchase. Nintendo says testing and updates may change support; some games may have partial functionality issues, take longer to become playable or remain unsupported.
The practical takeaway is to verify the individual game rather than assume that “backward compatible” means a flawless launch or an automatic graphics upgrade.
