Selenium can capture page and element screenshots, but the official Selenium documentation reviewed here does not describe a built-in baseline assertion equivalent to Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot(). With Selenium, add a comparison tool and decide how your team stores, reviews, and updates baselines.
What differs: capturing an image versus testing it
A screenshot is only the captured image. A visual regression test also needs an expected image (a baseline), comparison rules, and a process for reviewing and approving changes. Playwright Test documents these pieces together through expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Selenium’s documented screenshot APIs provide images, while the comparison and baseline workflow is left to the tools and conventions you select.
| Decision | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Capture | Page, full-page, and element screenshots; the API can also return image bytes for processing. Playwright Screenshots guide | Driver and element screenshot APIs are documented across language bindings. The WebDriver screenshot endpoint returns a Base64-encoded image. | Built-in baseline assertion | Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot() to generate and compare reference images. Visual comparisons guide |
The official Selenium pages reviewed document capture, not a first-party baseline assertion workflow. Use a separate comparator or service. |
| Baseline ownership | The first assertion run creates a missing expected image; review and commit baseline files with the test assets. | Choose where to store images, how to compare and approve changes, and how to update expected images. |
How Playwright screenshot comparisons work
Capture a screenshot or assert against a baseline
Use page.screenshot() when you need an image file or bytes for another process. Playwright also documents full-page capture with fullPage: true and element or locator capture. For a visual assertion in a Playwright Test suite, use toHaveScreenshot(); its first run creates the reference image, and later runs compare new captures with it.
The documented assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing the latest capture with the expected image. This helps avoid comparing while a page is still changing, but it does not make uncontrolled pages deterministic. Review generated baselines and commit them so later test runs have an explicit reference.

Choose the right comparison boundary
- Whole page: use a full-page screenshot when changes anywhere in the page are within the test’s remit. Long pages and content below the fold can make the comparison sensitive to unrelated changes.
- Component or region: capture an element or locator when the expected appearance is limited to one UI area. This narrows the regression boundary and can reduce noise from unrelated page content.
- Dynamic content: Playwright’s visual comparison guide describes masking and stylesheet options for volatile elements. Use them deliberately: too much masking or tolerance can conceal real regressions. Inspect visual diffs rather than treating a passing threshold as proof that every change is harmless.
See the Playwright visual comparison documentation for assertion configuration and baseline behavior, and the PageAssertions API for assertion details and limitations.
How Selenium screenshot-based visual testing works
Selenium can save a driver screenshot or capture an element screenshot, depending on the language binding. Its Python WebDriver API also documents methods to save the current window as PNG or return screenshot bytes and Base64 data. Those images can be passed to an image library, test framework extension, or visual testing service.

- Capture the state under test. Put the application into a known state, then take a driver or element screenshot using the API for your Selenium language binding.
- Store a baseline. Decide how expected images are named, versioned, and associated with browser and platform configurations.
- Compare and report. Select a comparator and its rules for pixel differences, regions, or other changes. Make failures expose both the current image and a useful diff.
- Review updates. When an intentional UI change occurs, inspect it and explicitly approve or replace the baseline; do not automatically accept every new screenshot.
The Selenium documentation pages cited here do not establish a built-in visual baseline assertion equivalent to Playwright Test’s. That is a distinction about the documented workflow, not a claim that Selenium cannot be used for visual testing.

Keep screenshots stable across runs
Rendering can change with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright explicitly warns about these sources of variation and recommends generating and comparing baselines in the same environment. For either framework, compare like-for-like browser and environment configurations.
- Pin the browser and operating-system environment used to create and check baselines.
- Keep separate baselines for browser or platform combinations when their rendering differs.
- Make test data and UI state deterministic where possible; isolate timestamps, rotating content, animation, and other volatile regions only when appropriate.
- Review diffs when changing browsers, operating systems, rendering settings, or comparator thresholds.
Playwright snapshot names can include browser and platform information. Its guidance also describes controls for waiting on stable screenshots and handling dynamic content; consult the visual comparisons guide before setting project-specific policies.

Which should your team choose?
- Starting fresh and want integrated assertions: choose Playwright Test if its browser and language support fit your project. The documented baseline creation and comparison path is built into the test workflow.
- Already invested in Selenium: keep Selenium when it fits your language, browser coverage, and infrastructure. Add a deliberate image comparison and baseline review process instead of treating capture alone as a visual test.
- Testing a focused component: prefer element or locator capture when the component is the visual contract under test.
- Testing a whole page: use full-page capture only when page-wide changes matter, and verify that it behaves consistently in the browser setup you run.
- Checking multiple browsers or platforms: maintain distinct baselines where rendering differs and use consistent environments for each comparison.
These sources do not establish a general speed or accuracy winner. Choose based on the baseline workflow you want and the test stack you already operate.

For standalone screenshots rather than an in-suite visual regression assertion, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
