How to Compare ScreenshotMachine Captures for Visual Changes

ScreenshotMachine’s reviewed documentation describes an HTTP screenshot API, not a CLI or built-in visual diff. Here’s how to make comparable captures and review changes with a separate tool.

ScreenshotMachine’s reviewed documentation describes an HTTP GET screenshot API, not a documented CLI or built-in visual-diff command. You can still use ScreenshotMachine for consistent before-and-after captures, then compare the saved image files with a separate image-comparison tool. This guide keeps those two stages distinct so you can spot changes without mistaking a third-party CLI or diff utility for a ScreenshotMachine feature.

What ScreenshotMachine does—and what it does not establish

The reviewed ScreenshotMachine documentation describes an HTTP GET endpoint with capture parameters such as API key, target URL, dimensions, device, image format, cache age, delay and zoom. It does not establish a ScreenshotMachine CLI command or built-in visual comparison feature. If you need a specific first-party CLI invocation, verify it against current ScreenshotMachine documentation before relying on one; do not assume another project’s command belongs to ScreenshotMachine.

The practical workflow is therefore: capture a baseline, capture the same page later under matching conditions, and compare the two image files separately. The comparison tool—not ScreenshotMachine, based on the documentation described here—produces the visual diff.

Make a repeatable before-and-after capture

1. Choose and record the page state

Decide what the page should show before taking either screenshot. Use the same URL and, where relevant, the same login state, selected tab, expanded menu, scroll position, locale, and other stateful inputs. A screenshot of a page before a banner appears is not comparable to one taken after it appears.

2. Keep capture settings aligned

Record ScreenshotMachine’s dimensions and device profile and reuse them for every capture. Select an explicit format such as PNG when lossless pixel inspection matters. Keep zoom consistent as well: a different viewport, device profile, zoom, or format can change the resulting image independently of a code change.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

3. Control freshness and loading time

ScreenshotMachine documents cacheLimit values from 0 to 14 days, with a documented default cache age of 14 days. Set cacheLimit=0 when you need a fresh screenshot rather than a cached result. Its documented delay defaults to 200 ms and accepts values from 0 through 10000 ms. Choose a delay long enough for the content you need to settle; the documentation suggests 2000 ms or more for some long pages with images or animations. A fixed delay cannot guarantee that every asynchronous element has finished, so inspect captures for content that loads later or varies between runs.

4. Save the baseline and its settings

Keep the initial approved image as the reference or “golden” image, and store the capture settings beside it. On a later run, capture the same URL with the same dimensions, device profile, format, zoom, freshness choice and suitable delay. Android Developers describes screenshot testing as comparing a screenshot with a previously approved reference image; the reference is a review baseline, not proof that every later difference is a defect.

Compare the saved images with a separate tool

Use a separately identified image-diff tool to compare the before and after files. For example, ImageMagick’s compare utility can create a visual difference image from two image files:

magick compare before.png after.png diff.png

This is an ImageMagick example, not a ScreenshotMachine command or an official ScreenshotMachine integration. Keep the two source images as well as the diff: the highlighted output helps locate changed pixels, but the original captures provide the context needed to judge them.

A separate project, refactorau/screenshot-cli, documents its own compare command, threshold and minimum-change options, optional diff images, saved comparison data, and HTML/PDF reports. Its documentation gives an example such as pnpm compare report-data.jsonc; these are features of that project, not ScreenshotMachine. The separate Flutter-oriented mmcc007/screenshots project documents expected-image comparison and red-highlighted diff images. Neither example establishes a ScreenshotMachine integration.

Review differences before changing the baseline

Treat the diff as a review aid, not an automatic verdict. A changed screenshot can indicate a UI regression, an intended design update, or rendering noise. Operating systems, libraries and hardware architecture can produce small rendering differences, so use consistent environments when pixel-level stability matters. If a team uses thresholds or tolerances to reduce noise, set them deliberately: a threshold that ignores minor changes can also conceal a real change below that cutoff.

  1. Inspect the before image, after image and diff together.
  2. Check whether the changed area is expected—for example, a deliberate design update—or points to a defect.
  3. Fix unintended changes in the page or capture setup.
  4. Approve and replace the reference only after review confirms the change is intentional.

Android Developers notes that reference collections can become cumbersome, potentially containing thousands of PNGs. Store only useful baselines, avoid redundant screenshot combinations, and choose a retention approach such as source control, Git LFS or a cloud service that fits the team’s workflow.

If you want a screenshot API that returns an image directly, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET request. This is an alternative capture workflow; it does not make ScreenshotNeo a ScreenshotMachine CLI or perform the separate image-diff step shown above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a changed diff automatically mean the page has a bug?

No. A difference may be an intentional UI change or rendering noise; review it against the source captures before deciding whether to fix the page or approve a new reference.

Can I use a ScreenshotMachine capture as input to a different comparison project?

The cited separate projects describe their own comparison workflows, but the available details do not establish ScreenshotMachine integrations. Confirm file-format and input requirements in the chosen tool’s documentation.
