To highlight visual differences in screenshot tests, compare each new rendering with an accepted baseline, then inspect the resulting diff. In Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(): the first run creates a reference image and later runs compare against it. Keep capture conditions consistent and stabilize changing page content before loosening comparison tolerances.
How screenshot tests find visual changes
A visual screenshot assertion compares a captured page or component with a saved reference. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on its first run and compares later captures with those references. Playwright uses pixelmatch for the comparison. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.
A failing comparison indicates that the images differ beyond the configured tolerance; it does not by itself prove that the change is a bug. A difference may be an unintended regression, an intentional design update, or rendering noise.
Set up a repeatable Playwright comparison
- Put the page into the state you intend to test: load stable test data, complete relevant interactions, and wait for the UI to settle.
- Keep the browser, operating system, browser version, viewport, fonts, and other rendering conditions consistent between baseline creation and later runs.
- Add the screenshot assertion where that state has been reached:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test'; test('account page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => { await page.goto('https://example.com/account'); await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account' })).toBeVisible(); await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(); }); - Run the test once to create its reference screenshot. Review that image, then commit it through your project’s normal code-review process only if it represents the intended appearance.
- On a later run, inspect the failed comparison before deciding whether to fix the UI, accept an intentional update to the baseline, or control unstable content.
The exact reference files and commands depend on your Playwright project configuration. The key point is to review the initial baseline rather than treating the first generated image as automatically correct.

Understand the two tolerance controls
Playwright’s threshold controls how much perceived color difference is accepted for an individual pixel. Its documented range runs from 0 (strict) to 1 (lax). maxDiffPixels is a separate control: it sets how many differing pixels may be accepted. A color threshold is not a pixel-count allowance.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
threshold: 0.2,
maxDiffPixels: 100
});
These values are examples, not universal recommendations. Choose them by reviewing representative diffs for your own interface. Increasing tolerance can reduce noisy failures, but can also allow a real visual change to pass unnoticed.

Stabilize the page before relaxing comparison
Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline and comparison captures in the same environment where possible. Playwright also retries screenshot capture until two consecutive screenshots match; that improves repeatability but does not establish that a baseline is visually correct.
For dynamic regions, stabilize the underlying test data and page state first. If content is inherently volatile and irrelevant to the visual assertion, Playwright documents using a custom stylesheet to filter it. For example, a stylesheet can hide a timestamp or animation during capture. Apply such filtering narrowly: masking a region also means changes in that region will no longer be detected.

Choose a view that makes changes easy to see
When reviewing a failure, compare the baseline and new image rather than relying only on the test’s pass/fail result. Overlay, split/side-by-side, or alternating (“strobing”) views can make shifts and changed regions easier to notice. The available views depend on the review tool; they are not all built into Playwright.
Chromatic documents neon-green diff highlights, overlay/unified and side-by-side views, and diff strobing in its Diff Inspector. Its Playwright setup documentation describes a hosted snapshot-review workflow for Playwright. Applitools describes its Eyes integration with Playwright as a Visual AI alternative intended to handle some antialiasing and sub-pixel rendering differences; that is a vendor claim, so validate it against your application.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
- Many unrelated pixels change between runs: compare the capture environments first, including OS, browser version, viewport, and headless settings. Then look for changing data, animations, timestamps, or delayed content.
- A small color or edge difference fails: determine whether it is meaningful. If it is acceptable rendering variation, adjust
thresholdcarefully and inspect the resulting diff; do not confuse this with permitting a number of changed pixels. - A small changed area is acceptable: consider
maxDiffPixelsonly after reviewing examples. It sets a count, so it may permit a small regression wherever those pixels occur. - The baseline shows the wrong design: fix the test state or page setup, recapture, and review the new reference before committing it. Updating a baseline is not a substitute for deciding that the appearance is intended.
- Failures come from content that changes every run: make test data deterministic or narrowly filter the volatile element with a custom stylesheet. Avoid hiding broad regions that contain important UI.
- Two consecutive captures keep disagreeing: check for unfinished loading, animation, asynchronous data, and external content. Stabilize the page before relying on the screenshot assertion.

For a one-off screenshot or a capture outside your test runner, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API. Its one-call GET endpoint returns an image or PDF, and the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/account -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright highlight visual differences automatically?
Playwright compares screenshots and reports failed assertions; the visual presentation of the diff depends on the output or review tool you use.
Does a successful screenshot assertion prove the UI is correct?
No. It means the capture stayed within the comparison settings relative to the saved baseline. The baseline and any accepted tolerance still need human review.
