Artificial Intelligence in Software Engineering: Use Cases and Tools

AI in software engineering spans codebase discovery, implementation, testing, review, maintenance, security, and operations. Learn what developer tools document and how teams can evaluate them without assuming code generation guarantees quality or productivity.

AI can assist across the software engineering lifecycle—not just autocomplete code. Developers use it to explore codebases, plan and implement changes, write tests and documentation, review pull requests, refactor and upgrade software, and support security and operations. The useful question is not whether AI can produce an answer or a diff, but whether a particular tool fits your workflow and whether your team can validate its work.

How AI is used in software engineering

AI tools can contribute at several points in a development workflow. Their documented abilities vary by product, plan, client, configuration, and the permissions a team grants. In every case, treat output as a proposal to evaluate—not proof that a requirement has been met.

Requirements, planning, and repository discovery

An assistant can answer questions about a codebase, help investigate a repository, or propose a sequence of changes for a task. This can make unfamiliar code easier to navigate, but the response is only as useful as its context. Check whether it reflects the current repository, relevant dependencies, architectural constraints, and the actual product requirement before acting on a plan.

Implementation and editing

Code suggestions and natural-language instructions can draft new code or change existing files. Review the result against requirements, edge cases, project conventions, dependencies, and compatibility constraints. A change that looks plausible may still be incomplete, incorrect, or broader than intended.

Testing and code review

Some tools can propose or write tests and surface review suggestions, including in pull-request workflows. These can help developers examine a change, but they do not establish that test coverage is appropriate, that the tests are meaningful, or that the software is correct. Human review and suitable validation remain necessary.

Documentation and maintenance

Agentic tools may assist with documentation, refactoring, or software upgrades. For a multi-file or broad change, inspect the full diff and test behavior across affected areas. Confirm that the change preserves intended behavior and does not silently alter public interfaces, configuration, or supported versions.

Security and operations

Amazon Q Developer documents vulnerability scanning and remediation assistance, along with AWS architecture guidance and operational assistance. A product scan is one input to security work, not a complete security assessment. Security should be considered throughout development, deployment, and operation.

Examples of developer tools and their documented workflows

These are examples of documented capabilities, not a ranking of coding assistants. Availability can depend on the plan, client, policy, and configuration; confirm current product documentation before choosing or budgeting for a tool.

Tool Documented workflows Questions to evaluate
GitHub Copilot Code suggestions, codebase questions, issue-to-task agent workflows, file changes, pull-request review, and organization controls. How well does it fit your GitHub and repository workflow? Which agent permissions and organization policies are available on your plan and client?
Amazon Q Developer Code suggestions and chat, questions over private repositories, tests, vulnerability scanning, refactoring, documentation, upgrades, AWS architecture guidance, and operational assistance. Does your team need AWS integration? How will repository access, IDE or CLI use, security controls, and migration needs affect adoption? AWS states that IDE-plugin support is planned to end on 2027-04-30; check AWS documentation for any updates before making a decision.
OpenAI Codex OpenAI presents Codex as an AI coding partner included with named ChatGPT plans. Compare team versus individual administration, plan entitlements, usage limits, and workflow fit. Plan details and prices can change, so verify current OpenAI documentation before purchase.

How to choose a tool for your team

Start with a specific workflow and the environment in which it runs. A tool that is useful for a developer working in an IDE may not suit a team that needs repository-level automation or centralized administration. Compare the controls and costs that matter to the task, not just the model’s ability to generate code.

  • Integration: Check IDE, repository, pull-request, CLI, and cloud-service fit for the work your team actually does.
  • Context and access: Determine what source code and private repositories the tool can read, and whether its context can be restricted appropriately.
  • Autonomy and permissions: Understand whether the assistant only suggests changes or can edit files and act across a workflow. Give it only the access required for the task.
  • Review checkpoints: Identify where developers inspect plans, diffs, tests, and proposed remediations before changes are accepted or deployed.
  • Administration and policy: For organizational use, verify available policy controls, data controls, and plan-dependent administration in the current product documentation.
  • Limits and lifecycle: Compare plan entitlements and usage limits, and check product support timelines that could affect your IDE or migration plans.
  • Delivery practices: Consider whether requirements, tests, code review, release controls, and incident response are strong enough to catch mistakes and absorb additional review work.

Run a bounded evaluation on representative tasks before broad rollout. Agree in advance how changes will be checked, what access the tool receives, and what outcomes the team will measure. Do not infer a universal productivity gain from a successful demo.

Validation, security, and team governance

Generated code still needs engineering review. Check whether it satisfies the requirement, handles relevant edge cases, behaves correctly, follows the project’s conventions, and remains compatible with dependencies and supported environments. Run appropriate tests and examine the complete diff; an assistant’s own explanation or test suggestion is not independent verification.

Security needs the same lifecycle attention. NIST’s NCCoE DevSecOps document, dated 2026-03-24, is a preliminary draft project document that is updated on a rolling basis—not a finalized standard. It provides lifecycle-level context for practices aligned with NIST’s Secure Software Development Framework and emphasizes continuous security monitoring and improvement. Teams can use that framing to consider security beyond a single code scan.

Set expectations for when AI assistance is permitted, what data and repositories it may access, who remains accountable for a change, and how review and testing are documented. Resource review work explicitly: a tool may broaden or accelerate production of changes while also creating more work to assess them. The eu-LISA Technology Monitoring Report page, published in July 2026, notes security and quality concerns and the need to resource review of AI-generated code.

What evidence says about productivity

DORA’s 2025 report describes its research base as more than 100 hours of qualitative data and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide. That describes the report’s research base; it is not a measured productivity result for every team. DORA characterizes AI as an “amplifier,” arguing that it magnifies organizational strengths and dysfunctions. The practical implication is to assess AI alongside delivery practices, review capacity, and the team’s ability to validate changes—not to assume a fixed gain from adopting a tool.

The reviewed sources do not establish one neutral, universal productivity figure or a blanket best coding tool. Results and suitability depend on the task, environment, controls, and the organization’s engineering practices.

A related utility for browser-based development work

ScreenshotNeo is not a coding assistant or a replacement for GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q Developer, or Codex. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server that can support adjacent work such as capturing pages for browser-based QA or giving an AI agent a screenshot workflow. Its MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf; it is made by Yorker Media. For that specific capture task, it is an alternative to try first: it accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with verdict and billing details returned in headers.

One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the example URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for its request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 shots per month on its free plan with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using an AI coding tool mean a team can reduce code review?
