Make one targeted change at a time and verify it on the browsers and devices your audience actually uses.
How to Fix Mobile Browser Compatibility Issues
A mobile compatibility bug is not simply “an iPhone problem” or “a Chrome problem.” It occurs with a particular browser version, operating system, device, viewport, and feature combination. Establish those conditions before editing code; otherwise, it is easy to fix the wrong cause or introduce a regression elsewhere.
1. Record a reproducible report
Capture the page URL or route, device and operating system, browser and version, viewport size and orientation, steps to reproduce, expected result, and actual result. Note whether the behavior changes when the user zooms or opens the on-screen keyboard. A screenshot or brief recording is useful for visual defects, especially when a reporter cannot describe the layout difference precisely.
2. Reproduce on the affected browser
Use the actual device when possible. Compare the same route in another browser on that device, and in the affected browser on another device if available. This helps determine whether the problem follows the browser, operating system, viewport, or a particular code path. MDN Web Docs recommends a real device for the greatest accuracy in behavior and overall user experience; emulators and virtual machines can extend coverage when physical devices are unavailable.

3. Check the page-wide layout foundation
Confirm the document includes the responsive viewport declaration in its <head>:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">Without an appropriate viewport declaration, a mobile browser may lay out the page using a wider, desktop-sized viewport and scale it down. The result can look like tiny text or a desktop layout squeezed onto a phone. MDN explains that width=device-width tells mobile browsers to use the device width.
Then inspect the failing width and orientation for fixed-width containers, content that overflows horizontally, media queries that do not cover the viewport, and controls whose touch behavior depends on hover or a fine pointer. Prefer fluid sizing and test the actual interaction rather than assuming a layout that looks correct in a desktop browser’s device mode will behave correctly on a phone.

4. Isolate unsupported features
Look up compatibility for the specific CSS property or JavaScript API involved. Prefer checking whether the capability exists and providing a usable fallback over branching on a browser name: browsers can differ in versions, and the same feature may not behave identically across implementations. MDN describes feature detection as testing support in the current browser and conditionally providing an acceptable experience whether or not the feature is supported.

5. Check controls affected by zoom or the keyboard
Mobile pages have both a layout viewport and a visual viewport. Pinch zoom or the on-screen keyboard can change the portion of the page currently visible without changing the layout viewport in the way a page-level layout calculation might expect. This can expose problems with fixed bottom bars, dialogs, or floating buttons that are meant to stay in view.

6. Verify a focused target matrix
Choose targets from audience data and the browsers and devices your support policy promises to serve. You do not need to test every possible combination. Cover the affected browser and device, other important audience browsers on phones and tablets, and the interaction or feature implicated in the report. Re-test after each small change rather than waiting until the end.
Use real hardware for behavior that depends on touch, keyboard, zoom, or the operating system. Emulators and virtual machines are useful additions for broader coverage, but they do not make one device representative of every mobile browser. Include accessibility checks as well: a page that renders similarly can still have unusable focus order, labels, contrast, or touch targets.
Baseline compatibility summaries provide a useful starting point for modern browser support, not a guarantee for older releases, operating-system web views, assistive technology, accessibility, usability, performance, or security. Treat them as one input to a test plan, not as proof that the page works everywhere.

7. Treat foldable layouts as progressive enhancement
Foldable and hinged devices can expose viewport segments that allow a page to respond to separate screen regions. The Viewport Segments API is experimental and has limited availability, so check current compatibility before relying on it. Keep a conventional single-viewport layout as the fallback.

The browser name alone does not identify the cause. The browsers may be running on different operating systems or versions, rendering at different viewport dimensions, or handling a particular feature differently. A problem that appears when the keyboard opens or the page is zoomed may be about the visual viewport rather than the CSS breakpoint. Record the exact setup, compare the same page and action across browsers, and then test the suspected layout or feature directly.
How do I test a website on different mobile browsers?
Start with the browsers and devices your audience uses, then combine direct device testing with emulators or virtual machines where physical access is limited. Match tests to real risks: viewport widths and orientations for layout, touch and keyboard for interaction, and feature support for API-dependent behavior. MDN’s guidance favors real devices for accuracy while recognizing virtual options as a way to widen coverage. No single phone validates all mobile browsers; select hardware that reflects your audience and support commitments.
Capture a visual comparison while debugging
Screenshots can make a browser-specific visual regression easier to compare, but an image alone will not reveal a touch, keyboard, accessibility, or performance defect.
