Register the font with @font-face, use standard properties such as font-weight for registered axes, and keep a fallback family. Then test the browsers and operating systems your site supports: broad support for one variable-font feature does not guarantee identical behavior for every font or descriptor.
What a variable font does
A variable font is a web-font file that can encode a range of design variations—such as weight, width, or slant—instead of requiring a separate file for each variation. The available axes and their ranges are determined by the font itself; a CSS declaration cannot add an axis the file does not contain. MDN describes variable fonts as an evolution of OpenType that incorporates multiple variations into one file rather than using a separate file for every width, weight, or style: MDN Web Docs: Variable fonts.
Register the font with its actual ranges
Use @font-face to make the font available to the page. For a variable font, declare the supported ranges using the relevant descriptors. The values below are illustrative only: replace them with the values supported by your font, and omit a range descriptor if the font does not support that axis.
@font-face {
font-family: "Example VF";
src: url("/fonts/example-vf.woff2") format("woff2");
font-weight: 300 900; /* replace with the font's actual supported range */
font-stretch: 75% 125%; /* declare only if supported by this font */
font-style: normal;
font-display: swap;
}
body {
font-family: "Example VF", Arial, sans-serif;
}
Declaring a range tells CSS which values that face can supply; it does not prove that your font has those values. Check the font’s own axis metadata before choosing ranges. MDN’s @font-face reference covers font-face setup, and its font-weight descriptor reference documents the weight descriptor. MDN recommends WOFF2 for web delivery in general because its compression is more efficient than older WOFF or OpenType formats.

Use standard CSS properties for registered axes
For an axis with a corresponding CSS property, prefer that property over the lower-level font-variation-settings control. The common mappings are:
| Axis | CSS property to prefer | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
wght |
font-weight |
The font supports the requested weight range. |
wdth |
font-stretch |
The font supports the requested width range. |
slnt or ital |
font-style |
The font provides the relevant slant or italic behavior. |
opsz |
font-optical-sizing |
The font includes an optical-size axis; set the property as appropriate for the design. |
For example, once your face declares its real weight and width ranges, request a particular weight or width on an element with font-weight and font-stretch. Avoid using an axis value outside the font’s supported range and assuming it will produce the intended design. More detail on registered axes and their CSS mappings is in MDN’s variable fonts guide.

Use low-level axis settings only when they add control
font-variation-settings is useful for a custom axis or an axis without a matching high-level CSS property. Axis tags are four-character strings and case-sensitive. Registered axis tags are conventionally lowercase and custom tags uppercase, but the font defines which axes actually exist. For example:
.custom-heading {
font-variation-settings: "GRAD" 40;
}
This example is valid only if the font includes the custom GRAD axis and supports the requested value. For registered axes, MDN advises using the corresponding high-level property when possible. Low-level settings can override the matching high-level property, so avoid setting the same axis both ways unless you intentionally want that precedence. See MDN’s font-variation-settings reference.

Keep a fallback and scope enhancements deliberately
Keep a conventional fallback family in the font-family stack so text remains styled if the web font fails to load. You can also gate a variable-font-specific treatment with a feature query when it suits your support matrix:
body {
font-family: "Example VF", Arial, sans-serif;
}
@supports (font-variation-settings: "wdth" 115) {
.compact-heading {
font-stretch: 85%;
}
}
This query checks support for the property and syntax in the condition; it is not a guarantee that every font axis, descriptor, or rendering detail behaves identically. MDN’s variable-font guide shows feature queries as one way to scope variable-font styling.

What cross-browser compatibility means in practice
A blanket claim that every variable-font feature works everywhere would be misleading. MDN describes the font-variation-settings CSS property as widely available since September 2018, but labels the @font-face variation-settings descriptor as having limited availability. Those are distinct capabilities, and support for the property does not establish support for every descriptor or every font. The operating system and font-rendering stack can also affect results. Consult MDN’s references for the property and the FontFace variationSettings descriptor; test the actual browser-and-OS combinations your site targets rather than relying on a single generic support claim. The cited documentation does not provide a current browser-version-by-version matrix, so exact minimum versions should be checked against current compatibility data for your deployment targets.
Test the rendered result across your target browsers
- List the browser and operating-system combinations your site needs to support. Test those combinations, not only multiple browsers on one machine.
- Load the page with the intended font file and confirm it succeeds in the browser’s network panel or console.
- Check text at the weights, widths, styles, and optical-sizing behavior the design requests. Include fallback behavior if the web font is unavailable.
- Compare the rendered text and layout at relevant viewport sizes. Look for changes in wrapping, clipping, alignment, and visual emphasis as well as whether the font loaded.
- If a value has no visible effect, verify the font’s axis metadata and declared ranges before changing CSS.
Captures can make visual comparisons easier to review, but a screenshot of one browser does not establish cross-browser support; capture and inspect each target environment separately.

Troubleshoot axes that appear not to work
- The requested variation has no effect: Confirm the font file contains that axis and supports the requested value. A CSS request cannot create an unsupported axis.
- The face is not selected as expected: Check that
@font-facedeclares the intended weight, stretch, and style ranges and that the element requests values within them. - A custom variation is ignored: Check the four-character tag spelling and capitalization against the font’s axis metadata.
- A setting works until another rule is added: Inspect the cascade for a later
fontshorthand. The shorthand resetsfont-variation-settingsand several other font longhands tonormal. Check declaration order and the computed styles. See MDN’s font shorthand reference. - The browser uses the fallback: Check the font URL, network response, file format, console messages, and font-face declarations. A fallback appearing can be a loading or resource issue rather than an axis-support issue.
- Results differ between machines: Check the operating system and font-rendering stack as well as browser behavior, then retest on the actual target combinations.
Or skip the browser setup
To capture a page for a visual check, you can request a screenshot through ScreenshotNeo’s API. This does not replace testing each target browser and operating system: it captures the page requested by the API, and meaningful cross-browser comparison still requires checking the environments you support.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
