To work with an iframe in Selenium Java, switch WebDriver into it with driver.switchTo().frame(...) before finding or interacting with elements inside. When the iframe loads asynchronously, wait with ExpectedConditions.frameToBeAvailableAndSwitchToIt(...). Return to the page with defaultContent(), or move up one level in a nested frame with parentFrame().
Switch to an iframe, interact with it, and return
WebDriver searches within its current browsing context. It starts in the top-level page, so elements inside an iframe are not available to ordinary page-level searches until you switch to that frame. Once switched, find and use the inner elements as usual.
This example waits up to 10 seconds for a frame with the ID payment-frame, switches into it, clicks its submit button, then returns to the page document:

driver.switchTo().defaultContent();The timeout is an example, not a universal setting; choose one appropriate to the application and test environment. The wait condition both waits for the located frame to be available and switches into it. See the Selenium Java API documentation for ExpectedConditions.

Choose how to identify the frame
Selenium documents three ways to switch to a frame: pass its WebElement, pass its name or ID, or use its zero-based index. The right choice depends on whether the selector is stable, unique, and clear about which frame you intend.

driver.switchTo().frame(frame);Use a locator that identifies the intended frame rather than relying on ordering when the page provides a suitable stable selector. For the documented overloads and behavior, consult Selenium’s frames guide and WebDriver Java API.
Return to the page or move up a nested frame
driver.switchTo().defaultContent()exits all frames and selects the top-level page document.driver.switchTo().parentFrame()moves to the immediate containing context, which is useful when frames are nested.
After a switch, searches run in the newly selected context. Switch back deliberately before searching for page-level elements, and switch into the relevant frame before searching for its contents.

Troubleshoot frame-switching failures
- “No such element” although the content appears in the browser: Check whether the element is inside an iframe. Switch into that frame before locating the element.
- The frame is not found immediately after navigation or an action: It may not be available yet. Wait with
frameToBeAvailableAndSwitchToItinstead of assuming the frame is ready at the instant of lookup. - Selenium selects the wrong frame: Check its actual
id,name, and nesting. Duplicate names or IDs select the first match; indexes depend on order. - Main-page elements stop resolving: WebDriver may still be inside a frame. Use
defaultContent()to return to the page orparentFrame()to move up one level. - A frame reference fails after the page rerenders: The old frame element may have been replaced. Locate it again with a stable selector and wait for it to be available before switching.
