In Selenium 4 and later, minimize the active browser window with the window-management API: Python uses driver.minimize_window(), Java uses driver.manage().window().minimize(), and JavaScript uses await driver.manage().window().minimize(). The command asks the operating system’s window manager to minimize the window; it does not guarantee the same visible result on every platform or in a remote session.
Minimize the current browser window
Selenium applies the minimize operation to the current browsing context. If your test has switched among tabs or windows, first switch to the handle for the browser window you intend to minimize.

What minimizing does—and what it does not guarantee
The operation requests a minimize action from the host window manager. Selenium’s documentation says the exact behavior is specific to each window manager and that the window typically hides in the system tray. Treat that as a common outcome, not a cross-platform guarantee: taskbar, dock, tray, or other presentation can vary. The command is supported in Selenium 4 and later, as documented in the official guide.
WebDriver uses window handles to switch between browsing contexts; it does not treat tabs and windows as separate categories for this operation. Make the desired handle current before calling minimize if the session has multiple contexts open.

Remote WebDriver and Grid
With Remote WebDriver or Selenium Grid, the browser runs on a remote machine or through a Selenium server. A minimize request applies in that remote environment. Do not assume it will visibly minimize a window on your local desktop: the local effect depends on how the remote browser and desktop are hosted. The WebDriver documentation describes remote control, but the reviewed guidance does not promise a particular visible result for every Grid configuration.

These are separate window-management operations in Selenium’s official guide. Minimize is appropriate when the test specifically needs to request a minimize action. If the test is about responsive layout or viewport dimensions, set a size instead; minimizing is not a substitute for controlling geometry.

Common problems and fixes
- The call is unavailable: Confirm that the project uses Selenium 4 or later and that the installed language binding exposes the window operation.
- The wrong tab or window is affected: Switch to the intended window handle before minimizing. The operation targets the current browsing context.
- The browser does not appear in the expected tray or taskbar location: The visible outcome belongs to the operating system’s window manager. Selenium does not guarantee a uniform presentation.
- Nothing changes on your local screen during a remote run: Check where the browser is actually running. A remote session’s visible desktop is remote, and a local visual effect is not guaranteed.
- A layout test behaves differently after minimizing: Use an explicit window size or the appropriate maximize/fullscreen operation when geometry is the requirement; do not use minimize to set a viewport.
