To run Selenium browser checks with Jest, use Jest to discover tests, manage setup and cleanup, and make assertions; use the selenium-webdriver package to start and control the browser. The setup below uses a real Chrome session, submits Selenium’s demonstration web form, checks the visible result, and closes the browser even if the test fails.
What Jest and Selenium each do
Jest is the test runner: it provides describe, test, expect, and lifecycle hooks such as beforeAll and afterAll. Selenium WebDriver is the browser automation layer. Its JavaScript binding, selenium-webdriver, creates a browser session and sends it navigation, element, and interaction commands.
Selenium’s documentation lists Jest as a possible test runner, while its illustrated JavaScript runner example uses Mocha. Jest is therefore a valid choice, but the Jest-specific test wiring is your project’s choice rather than Selenium’s only documented JavaScript path. Selenium describes WebDriver as browser automation that can run locally or on a remote machine. Selenium WebDriver documentation · Selenium test-runner guidance
Check Node.js and install the packages
The Selenium JavaScript API page currently requires Node.js 22 or newer. Its support table lists Node 22 through 2027-04-30, Node 24 through 2028-04-30, and Node 26 through 2029-04-30; treat these as the page’s current support information, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Check the Selenium WebDriver JavaScript API for updates.

Write a browser test with reliable cleanup
This test opens a Chrome browser, navigates to Selenium’s demonstration form, enters text, submits it, and asserts the message shown by the page. Selenium browser operations are asynchronous, so each navigation, interaction, and read is awaited.
const { Builder, Browser, By } = require('selenium-webdriver');
describe('web form', () => {
let driver;
beforeAll(async () => {
driver = await new Builder().forBrowser(Browser.CHROME).build();
});
afterAll(async () => {
if (driver) {
await driver.quit();
}
});
test('submits a value and displays a confirmation', async () => {
await driver.get('https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html');
await driver.findElement(By.name('my-text')).sendKeys('Selenium');
await driver.findElement(By.css('button')).click();
const message = await driver.findElement(By.id('message')).getText();
expect(message).toBe('Received!');
});
});
Run it with:
npm test
The demonstration follows Selenium’s documented first-script flow: locate controls, enter text, click, read a result, and close the driver. See Selenium’s first script. The combined Jest and Selenium example here is a tutorial implementation, not a claim that the exact snippet was independently run against particular package versions.
Why cleanup belongs in a lifecycle hook
afterAll runs after the suite’s tests, including when an assertion fails, so driver.quit() can close the session rather than leave a browser process running. The guard avoids trying to close a session if browser construction did not assign a driver. If you create a fresh driver for every test, use beforeEach and afterEach instead.
Choose whether to share a browser session
This example shares one session across the suite. That avoids starting a browser for every test, but page state can carry over and make tests depend on order. For isolated tests, create and quit a driver per test with Jest’s per-test hooks. Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describes the browser automation layer; Jest documents test lifecycle methods and asynchronous tests in its getting-started guide.

Locate elements and assert observable outcomes
Selenium’s By helpers let you select elements by different attributes. The example uses a name for the input, a CSS selector for the button, and an ID for the response. Prefer selectors that reflect stable page markup, and assert something the user can observe—such as the confirmation text—rather than merely checking that a command completed.
By.name('my-text')selects the form field by its name attribute.By.css('button')selects a button with a CSS selector.By.id('message')selects the response element by ID.
If the page’s markup changes, recheck the relevant locator against the current page. A failed lookup usually points to an incorrect selector, a changed page, or an element that is not yet available.
Run and troubleshoot the test
Node version or package errors
- Selenium reports an unsupported Node version: check the installed runtime with
node --versionand use a Node release meeting the API page’s current minimum, Node.js 22. - Jest is not found or the test command fails immediately: confirm installation completed in the project directory, that Jest appears in the project dependencies, and that
package.jsonincludes thetestscript. - The test file is not discovered: confirm the file is named with Jest’s usual
.test.jspattern and run the configurednpm testcommand from the project root.
Browser session does not start
The example requests Chrome. Confirm Chrome is installed and can start in the environment where Node runs. Selenium Manager handles browser driver installation automatically in the documented default setup, so manual driver downloads are not a required first step. If session creation still fails, inspect the full error for browser availability, permissions, or environment-specific configuration problems before changing the test.
Element lookup or assertion fails
- No such element: verify the test URL loads the expected form and that the locator matches its current markup.
- Click or text entry runs before the page is ready: make sure the preceding navigation is awaited. Do not remove
awaitfrom Selenium commands; browser operations are asynchronous. - The message assertion fails: inspect the value returned by
getText()and check whether the page submitted successfully or its expected result changed.
Browser processes remain after a failed test
Keep driver.quit() in an awaited cleanup hook, not only at the end of the test body. That way cleanup is still attempted when an assertion throws. If browser construction fails before assigning driver, the guard in the example prevents a second error during teardown.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
A browser test starts a real browser session, so it exercises browser behavior rather than just JavaScript functions. Reusing a session can reduce repeated setup, but it risks state coupling; per-test sessions offer more isolation at the cost of more browser startup work. Selenium WebDriver can run locally or remotely, so teams can choose a remote setup when their environment calls for it. The cited official guidance does not establish a specific execution-speed or reliability figure; measure your own suite in its target environment.
Jest and Selenium are open-source packages installed through npm; this tutorial does not require a paid service. Browser availability and the environment running the test remain practical requirements for executing it.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a website screenshot rather than test browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This does not replace Jest or Selenium for testing a form workflow.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Jest and Selenium run in the same JavaScript project?
Yes. Jest runs and asserts the tests, while selenium-webdriver controls the browser. Selenium’s documentation lists Jest as a usable runner, although its illustrated JavaScript runner example uses Mocha.
Do I need to download ChromeDriver manually for the example?
Not in Selenium’s documented default workflow: Selenium Manager handles browser driver installation automatically. Chrome itself still needs to be available to the environment running the test.
Should I create one browser for the whole Jest suite or one per test?
A shared browser reduces repeated startup but can carry state between tests; a separate session per test improves isolation. Choose based on the suite’s state and runtime needs.
