The current Selenium JavaScript API page specifies Node.js 22 or later and installs with npm install selenium-webdriver. The example below tests a small local page so you can run the complete flow without depending on a third-party site.
What Selenium does in a JavaScript browser test
Selenium WebDriver is an interface for automating browsers. Your Node.js test calls the Selenium language binding; a browser-specific driver communicates with the browser. You write the test and assertions, while Selenium handles browser control. The Selenium documentation describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation.
A useful test has four parts: start a session, navigate to the page, perform an action, and assert an outcome that matters. Always close the session, including when an assertion fails.
Install Selenium and prepare a test page
Check Node.js and install the package
Use Node.js 22 or later, as specified by the current Selenium JavaScript API reference. In a new project directory, run:

npm install selenium-webdriverSelenium Manager can arrange a browser driver when you have not supplied one. It has been included in Selenium releases since Selenium 4.11.0 and documents management for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. This still depends on the machine’s network access, permissions, and cache; restricted CI environments may need additional setup.
Create a local page to exercise
Save this as test-page.html in the project directory. Clicking the button changes a visible message, giving the test a deterministic result to verify.

The example uses IDs because they are explicit and stable in the fixture. For application tests, prefer selectors tied to stable IDs or accessible attributes rather than fragile layout details such as nested positions or styling classes that change during redesigns. Keep the assertion focused on a user-visible outcome or a result the feature is responsible for.
Synchronize with asynchronous pages
Modern pages often update after navigation because scripts, network requests, or rendering finish later. Do not treat an arbitrary fixed sleep as proof that the required state is ready. Wait for the specific condition your next action or assertion depends on, such as an element becoming available or a result appearing.

Selenium documents multiple waiting strategies; consult the current WebDriver documentation for the exact wait API and syntax for your binding version. The local fixture above updates synchronously on click, but a production application may need an explicit wait before reading the changed content.
Organize repeated tests with a runner
A runner supplies test organization, reporting, and lifecycle hooks; Selenium remains the browser-control layer. Selenium’s JavaScript guidance describes Mocha as a common choice and also notes Jest. Use the runner already established in your project unless you have a concrete reason to adopt another.
In a runner-based suite, put browser creation in setup hooks and driver.quit() in teardown hooks so cleanup still runs after failures. Whether each test gets a fresh browser session or a suite shares one is a project design choice: fresh sessions improve isolation, while reuse can reduce setup work but risks state leaking between tests.

Run locally, then scale execution when needed
Start with a local browser while developing a test. Local execution is straightforward and lets you control the installed browser and environment. When you need coverage across machines, operating systems, or browser configurations, Selenium Server and Selenium Grid provide remote WebDriver execution. The JavaScript API documents configuring a remote server with Builder().usingServer(...) or the SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL environment variable; see the Selenium Grid documentation for the current deployment guidance.
Remote runs add infrastructure and network dependencies, so adopt them when cross-platform coverage or execution capacity justifies that complexity. Browser and driver availability, permissions, and network policy remain relevant in CI as well as on developer machines.

Classic WebDriver commands cover common actions such as navigation, locating elements, and clicking. WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket connection for event-driven signals, including network activity, console messages, and JavaScript errors. It is useful when a test needs to observe browser events rather than only issue commands and inspect the resulting page. Confirm that the browser and Selenium binding support the particular BiDi feature you need before designing a test around it.

Common failures and fixes
- Driver or browser cannot be started: confirm that the selected browser is installed and that the environment allows Selenium Manager to access required downloads and cache locations. In locked-down environments, arrange the driver and browser through the environment’s approved process.
- Test cannot locate an element: verify the selector against the current page and ensure navigation reached the expected document. If the element is added asynchronously, synchronize on its availability rather than adding a guessed delay.
- Assertion runs before the page is ready: wait for the specific resulting condition described by the test, using Selenium’s current wait documentation.
- Browser remains open after a failed test: keep teardown in a
finallyblock for a standalone script or the runner’s teardown hook for a suite. - Remote session fails to connect: check the configured remote URL, server availability, and network access from the test process; local WebDriver and Grid are separate execution paths.
