Build a layered workflow: identify important tasks, audit the screens those tasks reach, add framework-specific Android checks, and complete key journeys using VoiceOver or TalkBack.
What mobile screen-reader testing can—and cannot—automate
Automated checks can flag certain accessibility issues in the interface exposed to a test. They are useful for repeatable checks during development and regression testing, but they do not exercise every aspect of using an app with a screen reader. Android cautions that automated tools can miss problems that appear only at runtime. Apple likewise says that clearing audit findings does not guarantee a fully accessible app.
Use automation to find actionable problems early, then verify that people can navigate and complete important tasks with the platform screen reader. Do not describe an automated pass as proof that an app is screen-reader tested or accessible.
Start with user tasks, not a list of screens
Identify the main tasks a person can perform in the app and the screens each task visits. For example, a task might be signing in, finding an item, changing a setting, or submitting a form. Choose tasks that matter to your app; the examples are not a substitute for your own task list.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

For each task, note the expected outcome and the screens or states involved. This gives you a practical map for both automated audits and manual screen-reader walkthroughs. Apple’s guidance similarly recommends identifying the main tasks in the app and testing them with assistive technologies.
Add automated checks to the UI tests for each platform
iOS: XCTest accessibility audits
Apple documents calling performAccessibilityAudit(for:) on XCUIApplication from an XCTest UI test. The audit inspects the app’s current screen; when it finds audit issues, the test fails. An audit of one screen does not cover the rest of a journey, so add audit calls after the test reaches the important screens and states you want to check.
import XCTest
final class AccessibilityUITests: XCTestCase {
func testSignInFlowScreensHaveNoAuditIssues() throws {
let app = XCUIApplication()
app.launch()
// Perform the UI actions that reach the screen to audit.
try app.performAccessibilityAudit(for: .all)
}
}
This illustrates the API call and where it belongs in a UI test; add the actual interactions for your app before auditing each relevant screen. Apple’s audit report can include issue descriptions and suggestions for fixes. Review those findings, address the underlying interface problem, and rerun the relevant test.

An audit is a first-pass check, not a verdict on the whole app. Apple explicitly advises testing with assistive apps such as VoiceOver even when audit findings have been resolved.
Android Views: Espresso AccessibilityChecks
For apps built with Android Views and tested with Espresso, enable AccessibilityChecks so checks run alongside view actions. By default, checks cover the view involved in the action and its descendants. If you want checks to inspect the full screen hierarchy, configure root-view checks as well.
AccessibilityChecks.enable()
.setRunChecksFromRootView(true)
Place the configuration in your Espresso test setup before the actions you want checked. The root-view option broadens the check’s scope; it does not make the test equivalent to using TalkBack. Follow the Android Accessibility Test Framework and Espresso setup guidance for the dependencies and configuration appropriate to your project.

Android Compose: test semantics and properties
For Jetpack Compose, write UI tests that find and interact with semantic elements, then assert the properties and behavior your app requires. Android documents Accessibility Test Framework checks with Compose beginning with Compose 1.8.0. Treat that version as the documented starting point for the integration, and confirm compatibility with the Compose versions and test dependencies used by your project.
Semantic tests and automated accessibility checks serve related but distinct purposes: assertions verify the app-specific behavior you choose to test, while framework checks can flag supported accessibility issues. Neither one walks through the app as TalkBack does.

| Espresso AccessibilityChecks | Android apps using Views | Runs around view actions; checks the action view and descendants by default, or the root hierarchy when configured. |
| Compose semantics and accessibility checks | Android apps built with Jetpack Compose | Tests can interact with semantic elements and assert properties; documented Accessibility Test Framework integration starts with Compose 1.8.0. |
| VoiceOver and TalkBack walkthroughs | Validating actual assistive-technology use through important tasks | Exercises the platform screen reader; it complements rather than replaces automated checks. |

Complete important journeys with VoiceOver and TalkBack
VoiceOver on iOS
Install and run the app on a physical iOS device, then use VoiceOver to complete the important tasks from your task list. Apple says VoiceOver is not available in Simulator, so a simulator-only workflow cannot replace this part of iOS testing. Check whether you can move through the interface, understand the information announced for relevant elements, and finish the task.
TalkBack on Android
Use TalkBack, Android’s built-in screen reader, to work through the same important tasks. Pay attention to whether navigation and the information announced for controls make sense in context, and whether the task can actually be completed using the assistive technology.
What to observe during either walkthrough
- Can the tester reach the controls and content needed for the task?
- Does each relevant element convey useful information, including its purpose and state where applicable?
- Does navigation follow an understandable order as the tester moves through the task?
- Can the tester complete the task without relying on sighted interaction?
These are practical observations to record during a walkthrough, not a claim that a short checklist covers every accessibility need.

Turn findings into a repeatable cycle
- Choose a task and its screens. Record the intended outcome and the UI states the test must reach.
- Add platform checks at those states. Put iOS audits in XCTest UI tests; enable Espresso checks for Views tests; use Compose semantic tests and supported accessibility checks for Compose.
- Run the tests and inspect failures. Treat audit output as a pointer to investigate, not as a complete diagnosis of user impact.
- Fix the issue in the interface. Confirm the change addresses the finding rather than merely suppressing or bypassing the check.
- Rerun the affected automated tests. Then repeat the relevant VoiceOver or TalkBack task to check the actual experience.
- Keep the task coverage current. When a flow or screen changes, update the automated and manual checks that cover it.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a mobile screen-reader testing tool, so it does not replace XCTest, Espresso, Compose tests, VoiceOver, or TalkBack. For website screenshots, one GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of the target page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an automated accessibility audit prove an app is accessible?
No. It reports issues covered by that audit; Apple says a clean audit does not guarantee a fully accessible app.
Can I test VoiceOver in the iOS Simulator?
No. Apple’s guidance says VoiceOver is unavailable in Simulator; use a physical iOS device for the VoiceOver walkthrough.
When are Compose accessibility checks documented to begin?
Android documents Accessibility Test Framework checks with Compose beginning in Compose 1.8.0.
