For Java with Maven, BrowserStack’s current getting-started page lists JDK 11 or later, Maven 3.6 or later, and Selenium 4.23 or later using W3C capabilities; those requirements apply to that Java/Maven route, not every language or build.
Choose a setup route
BrowserStack documents three ways to get started: run a sample build, integrate an existing test suite, or test a locally hosted app. A sample is useful for learning the connection and result flow; integrating the existing suite is the direct route for a project you already maintain. Check prerequisites and prepare credentials
Java and Maven
For its Java Maven getting-started path, BrowserStack lists JDK 11+, Maven 3.6+, and Selenium 4.23+ (W3C). Treat these as the requirements for that documented route, not as general Selenium 4 requirements or prerequisites for other languages. Check the current Java getting-started guide before changing a project’s dependency versions.
Python
The Python onboarding guide calls for Python 3 and pip. Its SDK integration route uses environment variables for credentials, the BrowserStack Python SDK, a setup step, and a browserstack.yml file. The integration page describes support for Chrome on desktop and Android; do not assume that page establishes a broader platform matrix. See the Python guide and Python SDK integration documentation.

BrowserStack credentials
You need a BrowserStack username and access key. Store them in environment variables or an approved secret store rather than committing them to source control. BrowserStack’s Python guidance shows the environment-variable approach; the Java documentation also describes credential configuration in the project’s BrowserStack setup. Follow the exact current variable and configuration names in the guide for your language. SDK integration
Configure the target browsers and operating systems
In the SDK workflow, browserstack.yml is created at the project root and holds BrowserStack-specific settings, including the platforms to test. A platform entry represents a requested browser and operating-system combination. Choose combinations from BrowserStack’s current capability catalog rather than assuming every browser/OS version is available.

Capabilities are key-value settings that configure a cloud-grid session. BrowserStack’s SDK can manage cross-browser targets, parallelization, and Local Testing through configuration. If the same capability appears in both the test script and browserstack.yml, the configuration-file value takes precedence. That precedence is a common reason a script-level setting appears to have no effect. Consult the capabilities reference and SDK configuration guide for currently supported names and values.
Integrate and run the suite
Java SDK route
- Use the Java/Maven prerequisites above and an existing Selenium test project.
- Add the BrowserStack Java SDK following the current Java integration instructions.
- Set the BrowserStack username and access key outside committed source code.
- Create
browserstack.ymlin the project root and configure the desired platforms and BrowserStack options. - Run the project’s normal Maven test command, or the build command used by the project, using the SDK workflow in the guide.
- Open the resulting build or session in the Automate dashboard to inspect the run and its results.
The exact dependency declarations and configuration schema can change. Use BrowserStack’s current Java SDK integration guide for a project-ready configuration rather than copying a generic capability snippet into a different SDK version.

Python SDK route
- Confirm Python 3 and pip are available in the test environment.
- Set the username and access key as environment variables as shown in BrowserStack’s Python instructions.
- Install the BrowserStack Python SDK and run its documented setup flow.
- Create and configure
browserstack.ymlat the project root, selecting supported targets for the documented integration. - Run the test suite with the project’s normal Python test command and inspect the build/session in Automate.
Use the commands and configuration currently shown in the Python SDK guide; language-specific installation details should not be transferred from Java instructions.
SDK configuration or direct capabilities?
The SDK route centralizes platform and BrowserStack settings in configuration and offers documented controls for cross-browser platforms, parallelization, and Local Testing. A direct remote-session approach supplies capabilities through the test’s WebDriver setup instead. Choose a route documented for your language and framework; the reviewed Java material supports the SDK/configuration-file workflow but does not establish a complete, current direct-WebDriver implementation to copy verbatim.

Run tests against localhost or a private application
A remote browser cannot ordinarily reach a developer’s localhost or an internally hosted site directly. For a local, staging, or private application, establish BrowserStack Local so the remote session can access it, and configure the session’s local capability. The tunnel must be running in addition to the test pointing at the app URL. BrowserStack documents both language-binding and command-line-binary setup paths; follow the matching Local Testing instructions.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- Authentication fails: check that the username and access key are present in the process environment or configured as the current guide requires, and check for accidental whitespace or stale credentials. Do not expose the key in committed code.
- The test runs on an unexpected browser or OS: inspect the platform values in
browserstack.ymland the capability catalog. If a capability is set both in the script and YAML, the YAML value wins. - A private app is unreachable: verify that the BrowserStack Local tunnel is established and that the session has the
localcapability; setting only the application URL does not create the tunnel. - SDK installation or setup does not match the instructions: confirm that you are following the guide for the same language and integration method. Java/Maven prerequisites and Python setup steps are not interchangeable.
- No build appears where expected: verify that the test command actually executed the suite and then check the Automate dashboard for the resulting build/session, as shown in the getting-started workflow.
