WordPress Maintenance Tasks to Perform Regularly: A Practical Schedule

Keep WordPress updates, backups and site checks on a routine. This practical schedule explains what to review weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly.

Regular WordPress maintenance means keeping updates, backups, site checks and housekeeping on a routine—not simply clicking “Update.” Handle security releases and failed backups promptly; use a repeatable calendar for lower-risk reviews. The schedule below adapts WordPress.org’s guidance to weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly checks without treating its intervals as universal rules.

What to check first when something needs attention

Do not wait for a scheduled review if the dashboard flags a security update, an update failure or a backup problem. WordPress.org’s maintenance guide recommends a recurring calendar, but its suggested intervals are planning baselines, not reasons to delay urgent work. The guide was last updated June 9, 2024: WordPress site maintenance.

  • Open Dashboard > Updates and review available WordPress core, plugin, theme and translation updates.
  • Prioritize security updates. WordPress can automatically apply minor and security core updates on supported installations.
  • Review auto-update notifications and failures. Plugin and theme auto-updates rely on WordPress Cron; if scheduled updates fail, check for related errors in Site Health.
  • Before plugin or theme updates, ensure a current backup is available. WordPress notes that problems can occur during plugin updates: Manage Plugins.

After a change, check the site’s front end and the functions visitors rely on—for example, forms, login or checkout if your site uses them. This is a practical way to confirm that the site still works, rather than a universal test protocol prescribed by WordPress.

A practical WordPress maintenance schedule

Use the intervals as a starting point and adjust them to the site’s publishing pace, traffic and business importance. WordPress.org’s 2024 guide recommends checking updates at least every three months (six months at the outside), broken links every six months to a year depending on site size, and scheduling backups three to twelve times yearly based on publishing volume. It also suggests checking active-site statistics at least monthly. These are suggested intervals, not measured performance results or a reason to postpone urgent work.

When Tasks
Weekly or when the dashboard signals attention Review Dashboard > Updates; act promptly on security notices; investigate failed updates and backups; check important pages and user flows after changes.
Monthly Review Tools > Site Health; check active-site statistics and key pages; confirm backups are completing and copies exist outside the live site.
Quarterly or several times a year Review plugins and themes, spam comments, unused media and database overhead; refresh important content.
Yearly and after significant changes Run a broader broken-link check; validate after code or CSS changes; review theme suitability and PHP compatibility with the host.

WordPress.org’s maintenance guide suggests recurring housekeeping every three to six months, backup scheduling three to twelve times a year according to publishing volume, and broken-link checks every six months to a year according to site size. Its Site Health documentation says, “You should check your website’s health on a regular basis.”

Weekly: updates, failures and a quick functional check

Review updates rather than assuming automation worked

Use Dashboard > Updates to see what needs attention. Auto-updates can reduce manual work, but WordPress sends success or failure notifications, and scheduled plugin or theme updates may fail if WordPress Cron is not functioning correctly. Read the notices and investigate a failure rather than assuming an extension is current. The WordPress auto-updates guide explains update controls and notifications.

Confirm important functions after changes

Visit the public site after an update or other significant change. Check the home page and one or more pages that support the site’s purpose, then test relevant functions such as a contact form, account login or checkout. If something is broken, use the backup and recovery process you have available before making further changes.

Monthly: Site Health, traffic and backups

Work through Tools > Site Health

In the WordPress dashboard, open Tools > Site Health. Review both critical issues and recommended improvements; the tool also reports aspects of the site’s configuration related to plugins and themes. Its checks can point to concerns worth investigating, but a clean report is not a substitute for reviewing the site’s actual behavior. See Site Health: keep your website healthy.

Review activity and important pages

For an active site, WordPress.org’s maintenance guide recommends checking statistics at least monthly. Look at whether key landing pages remain accurate and useful, and review reported 404s so visitors are not sent to missing pages. Prioritize pages that matter most to visitors or the business; not every old page needs the same level of attention.

Confirm backups are completing

Check that scheduled backups have run and that copies exist somewhere other than the live site. WordPress.org’s backup guidance recommends keeping backups on the host and on a computer. A backup that has never been restored is not a proven restore path, so confirm that you know how to recover the site before you need to do so.

Quarterly: extensions, media, spam and content

Keep needed plugins and themes maintained

Review installed plugins and themes. Update the ones you use, check compatibility information in the dashboard and remove extensions that are no longer needed. WordPress documentation notes that a plugin not updated since the latest core release may be incompatible or have unknown compatibility. An old update date is a reason to investigate, not by itself proof that a plugin is unsafe. See Manage Plugins and WordPress housekeeping.

Clean up only when you understand what will be lost

Review spam comments and unused images or other media. Before deleting files or database content, check whether a page, theme or other site function still depends on them and whether you may need them later. Database optimization may be appropriate when there is a concrete reason to address overhead; it is not a task to run blindly just because a calendar reminder says so. WordPress.org discusses unused media and optimization as housekeeping options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh high-value content

Check important pages for inaccurate details, broken links, grammar problems and expired offers or instructions. Match the depth of the review to the page’s importance and how often its information changes.

Yearly and after significant changes: links, code, themes and PHP

Check links and validate code or style changes

WordPress.org suggests checking broken links every six months to a year, depending on site size. It also recommends validating after code or CSS changes, typically yearly or after significant modifications. If a developer has changed site code or styles, check that the affected pages still display and function as intended.

Review theme suitability carefully

Consider whether the current theme still meets the site’s needs, but do not switch themes casually on a live production site. Review customizations and preview the replacement before making a change; a theme change can affect presentation and site behavior.

Coordinate PHP changes with your host

PHP is configured at the hosting or server level, not through the ordinary WordPress update screen. Before changing PHP, back up the site, update WordPress, themes and plugins, check compatibility and address reported issues. WordPress warns that compatibility with a newer PHP version is not guaranteed. Contact your hosting provider or a professional developer if you need help; the host controls the PHP setting. See Updating PHP.

Make updates safer and reduce avoidable surprises

  • Have a current backup before plugin or theme updates and PHP changes. Keep copies away from the live site and know how you would use them to recover.
  • Check compatibility information. The dashboard provides compatibility details for plugins; WordPress advises keeping plugins and themes current.
  • Use auto-updates with oversight. Notifications and failure checks still matter, especially if WordPress Cron is not working correctly.
  • Verify the site after changes. A successful update notice does not tell you whether every important visitor-facing flow still works.
  • Ask for help with server-level work. For PHP configuration, unresolved Site Health issues or a recovery you cannot safely perform, contact the host or a developer.
