To change a WordPress sidebar from the right to the left, edit the layout that controls the affected page type: use Appearance > Editor with a block theme, or look for a theme-specific layout setting in the Customizer or theme options with a classic theme. There is no universal WordPress switch for sidebar position. Appearance > Widgets changes the sidebar’s contents, not necessarily where it appears.
First identify what “sidebar” means on your site
In WordPress, a sidebar can mean a theme-defined widget area; it is not necessarily a narrow column on the edge of the screen. The active theme decides whether that area exists and where it is displayed. WordPress Developer Resources explains that a theme can include sidebars so users can add content to widget areas through the Customizer or Widgets screen: Sidebars.
The distinction matters: the widget area controls what appears there, while the page template or theme layout controls where it appears. Moving widgets between areas in Appearance > Widgets does not, by itself, guarantee that a sidebar will move from right to left. See WordPress’s Widgets Block Editor overview for how widget areas are managed.
For a block theme: edit the relevant template
Block themes use the Site Editor to edit templates and site areas. WordPress documents the route as Appearance > Editor when a block theme is active; the Site Editor is not available in the same way for classic themes. See the Site Editor guide and the developer guide to themes.
#1 Best Overall
- In the dashboard, open Appearance > Editor.
- Open the template for the view you want to change. For example, if the sidebar is misplaced on individual posts, look for the Single Post template. Which templates are available depends on the theme; WordPress describes template editing in its Template Editor guide.
- In the template, select the layout containing the main content and sidebar. Reorder or adjust the relevant blocks or columns so the sidebar sits on the intended side.
- Save the template, then check a page or post that uses it on the front end.
A template edit affects the views that use that template, not automatically every page on the site. If the change appears on the wrong page types, return to the Editor and identify the template used by the affected view.
For a classic theme: check its layout settings
Classic themes use traditional PHP templates and may offer sidebar-position controls through their own settings. WordPress does not guarantee a standard left/right control, so the exact option and its location vary by theme.
Rank #2
- Open Appearance > Customize and look for a layout, blog, page, or sidebar setting.
- If there is no position option, check the active theme’s documentation or its own options panel. The theme determines how widget areas are registered and displayed in its templates; see the WordPress Sidebars handbook.
- Use Appearance > Widgets only if you want to change which widgets or blocks appear in a widget area.
If the theme has no built-in layout control, changing the position may require editing its templates and styling. A CSS snippet is not universal: themes use different markup, responsive breakpoints, and layout rules. Consult the theme’s documentation or ask a developer to adapt the change to that theme.
Quick Recap

Choose the right route for the change you want
| Theme and goal | Where to start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Block theme; change the sidebar for a particular page type | Appearance > Editor, then the template for that view | Changes the layout for views using that template; available templates depend on the theme. |
| Classic theme; change sidebar position | Appearance > Customize or the theme’s options panel | A position control may exist, but its label and availability depend on the theme. |
| Either theme type; change sidebar contents | Appearance > Widgets | Edits content in theme-defined widget areas; it does not necessarily change their position. |
| Classic theme with no layout control | Theme documentation/support or a developer | Theme-specific template or styling work may be needed. |
If the sidebar still appears on the wrong side
- Check the page type. A post, archive, and ordinary page may use different templates or theme settings.
- Confirm the active theme type. Look for Appearance > Editor to determine whether the Site Editor route is available; classic themes typically rely on theme-specific controls and widgets.
- Check the correct control. Widgets determine what is in a widget area; the template or theme layout determines where it renders.
- Escalate when the control is absent. If neither the Editor nor the theme’s settings provide the layout change you need, consult the theme’s documentation or support rather than assuming WordPress has a global sidebar-position setting.
