How to Run Visual Tests with Python and TAU

TAU’s Python visual-testing workflow combines Selenium journeys with Applitools checkpoints. Learn how to choose a comparison mode and review baselines without mistaking every difference for a defect.

To run visual tests with Python using TAU (Test Automation University), use the course’s web-testing stack: Python drives the site through Selenium, and the Applitools Python SDK adds visual checkpoints. Keep ordinary functional assertions too: they check behavior, while visual comparisons reveal changes in the rendered page. Review each mismatch before accepting a new baseline.

TAU is ambiguous; here it means Test Automation University, not the University of Oregon’s unrelated Tuning and Analysis Utilities performance-profiling toolkit.

What visual testing adds to a Python and Selenium test

A functional test can confirm that a search returns the expected title or that a button leads to the correct page. It may not catch an unintended color, spacing, or layout change if the tested behavior still works. A visual checkpoint captures the rendered state and compares it with an accepted baseline. Use the two kinds of assertion together: one checks what the application does, the other helps assess how it appears.

The TAU course’s Python web examples use Selenium with the Applitools Python SDK. Its reviewed bookstore example drives the application to a result page and captures that state as a baseline. The course’s setup review dates from 2020, so treat it as a description of the workflow, not as a current installation guide.

Build the test around a meaningful user journey

  1. Prepare the test environment. The course review lists Python 3 and an IDE as prerequisites and describes setting up Applitools Eyes. Confirm current Python, browser, Selenium, SDK, and account setup requirements in the relevant official documentation before configuring a new project; the course review does not establish current versions or package commands.
  2. Drive the application with Selenium. Choose a representative path a user actually takes, such as searching the bookstore and reaching the results page. Make the test deterministic where possible: use stable test data and wait for the page state you intend to inspect.
  3. Retain functional assertions. Assert important behavior independently, such as the expected result being present. A screenshot comparison does not prove that an action was semantically correct.
  4. Add a visual checkpoint. At the state you want to verify, use the Applitools Python SDK’s checkpoint workflow to capture and compare the rendered page with its baseline. The lesson confirms the Selenium and Python SDK combination, but the reviewed material does not establish current method names or signatures. Consult the current TAU course material and Applitools documentation for runnable SDK calls rather than copying potentially stale code.
  5. Inspect mismatches before updating the baseline. Decide whether a difference is a regression or an intentional design change. Accept a new baseline only after verifying that the new appearance is expected.

Choose a visual matching mode for the question you are asking

The course review describes four modes. Their names and behavior are reported there; confirm current availability and configuration in the product documentation before relying on them in a new project.

Mode Best fit Trade-off to consider
Exact Pixel-level comparison when even small rendering changes matter. Small rendering variations can register as differences.
Strict Visual comparison that is less tied to exact pixel identity. It still requires review: a flagged difference may be acceptable, and a tolerated difference may still matter to your product.
Content Checking content while tolerating color differences. Not the right emphasis when color itself is a requirement.
Layout Checking structure and layout where content is dynamic. May be less suited to validating exact text or color presentation.

The review says Strict is the course’s typical choice; that is a course-specific recommendation, not a universal rule. Select a mode based on what must remain stable, how dynamic the page is, and how much rendering noise is acceptable.

Choose the checkpoint area and scope

A full page, a viewport, and a selected region answer different questions. A whole-page capture can reveal changes outside the initial viewport; a focused region can keep a test centered on a component; a viewport checkpoint concentrates on what appears in the current browser view. The course review also describes regions within iframes, batching checks, PDF visual validation, result analysis, and integrations as course topics. Confirm exact current support and APIs before adopting any of those workflows.

  • Use a broad checkpoint when page-wide composition is part of the requirement.
  • Use a selected region when unrelated page content changes frequently and the component is the test target.
  • Account for dynamic content such as rotating text or data; choose a suitable matching approach or make the test state predictable.
  • Record the context for each baseline, including the route and relevant browser or viewport conditions, so a later mismatch can be interpreted correctly.

Review differences without masking real regressions

A changed image is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of a defect. First determine whether the test reached the intended page state. Then inspect the changed area and decide whether the cause is an application change, dynamic data, or a rendering variation. If the change is intended, accept the new appearance as the baseline; if it is not, fix the application or stabilize the test rather than approving the difference.

The course review’s bookstore example describes a color change that a text-oriented assertion might not detect. That is the practical reason to preserve both functional and visual checks rather than replacing one with the other.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot artifact from a URL rather than a Selenium-driven visual regression test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not replace baseline comparison or mismatch review. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Troubleshooting common visual-test failures

  • The screenshot is of the wrong state: the test may have captured before navigation or rendering completed. Wait for the intended page element or state before placing the checkpoint; verify the journey with a functional assertion.
  • A comparison reports a difference after an expected redesign: review the changed region against the approved design, then update the baseline only if the change is intentional.
  • A comparison is noisy on dynamic pages: identify the changing content and decide whether to stabilize test data, narrow the checkpoint, or use a matching mode suited to dynamic layout. Do not mask a region without checking whether it contains meaningful regressions.
  • SDK setup instructions do not match your installation: the course setup review is from 2020 and does not verify current package names, APIs, or compatibility. Follow current Applitools documentation and verify the Python, browser, and Selenium versions required for your environment.
  • An iframe or PDF workflow is unclear: these topics appear in the course review, but exact current support and method calls are not established here. Check current product documentation before implementing them.

Plan reliability and cost around the checks you need

Visual tests are most useful when the captured state is repeatable and the team has a deliberate review process for changed baselines. The reviewed sources establish the course stack and topics, but they do not establish current Applitools pricing, package versions, compatibility ranges, or service limits. Confirm those details directly with the vendor before estimating costs or locking versions.
