You can use an NGINX RTMP container as a relay between a continuously publishing encoder and YouTube Live: the encoder sends a feed to your server, and NGINX pushes it to the YouTube ingest endpoint shown in Live Control Room. That relay does not create video or guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. Your source, host, network, and recovery plan must all keep working.
How the relay works
NGINX Open Source does not include RTMP support by default. This setup uses the third-party arut/nginx-rtmp-module, which adds RTMP ingest and relay features. The basic flow is:
- A source encoder publishes to your Docker host, for example at
rtmp://relay-host/live/stream-name. - The module accepts the incoming feed in an RTMP application and forwards it to YouTube using a configured push destination.
- YouTube receives the stream at the server URL and stream key currently shown for your broadcast in Live Control Room.
For NGINX Open Source, the documented approach is to build NGINX with a third-party module using --add-module=<PATH>. NGINX’s separately documented nginx-plus-module-rtmp is for NGINX Plus, not a free Open Source package. See NGINX’s configure documentation and its RTMP module page for NGINX Plus.

docker run -d -p 1935:1935 --name nginx-rtmp tiangolo/nginx-rtmp
This publishes RTMP port 1935 on the host and is useful for checking that a publisher can reach a local relay. Its README shows publishing from OBS to the container and viewing the local stream in VLC. It is a community image, not an official NGINX image. Before using any prebuilt image for an always-on service, check its maintenance status, base NGINX version, module compatibility, and configuration. The command is an example, not a production-ready deployment specification.
Build and pin your own image for more control
Building NGINX with the RTMP module gives you control over the NGINX and module versions and the resulting configuration. It also makes compatibility, updates, image rebuilding, and secret handling your responsibility. Whichever route you choose, pin the versions you deploy and review updates rather than relying on an unexamined floating image tag.

Get the YouTube destination and protect the key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the exact endpoint YouTube supplies instead of assuming a regional ingest URL.
- Configure the relay’s outbound push target with that destination. The RTMP module’s documented pattern is an application block with
live on;and one or morepushtargets. The YouTube key is part of the outbound destination path for a compatible ingest endpoint. - Keep the key in a secret-aware deployment mechanism, not a public repository, shared configuration example, or exposed log. Restrict access to the host and its configuration, and replace the key through Live Control Room if it is exposed.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” A plain RTMP push directive should not be assumed to negotiate TLS. Confirm that the specific relay client and destination protocol you select support and actually use RTMPS; if not, do not describe that connection as encrypted.

Set encoder quality for the content you actually stream
Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your intended resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube’s guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its codec options, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For advanced audio settings, it recommends stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Consult the live encoder settings page for the bitrate row appropriate to your format.
- Use settings the source encoder can sustain, not just a target resolution that looks good on paper.
- Test with representative motion and audio; a static test image may not reveal problems that occur with your real program.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages while testing.
Test the path before leaving it unattended
- Start the container and verify that the host is listening on the RTMP port you intend to use. If the publisher is on another machine, verify that routing and firewall rules allow it to reach that port.
- Publish a test feed from OBS or a comparable source to the relay’s address and stream name. The Docker example’s OBS-to-container workflow provides a local ingest test.
- Use VLC or another suitable player for a local relay smoke test where your configuration exposes a playable output. Confirm that video and audio arrive before diagnosing the YouTube leg.
- Configure the outbound YouTube push, start a test broadcast, and check the Live Control Room preview and health status. Make a short test with the same codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and representative content planned for continuous operation.
- Only after both ingest and YouTube delivery work should you treat the setup as ready for an unattended source.
What continuous operation requires
The RTMP module relays a feed; it does not supply programming or promise uptime. For a continuous channel, the source must keep generating audio and video, the container and host must stay available, and the network path to YouTube must remain usable. Decide how each component will be supervised and recovered before you rely on it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Source process: Keep the encoder or media-generation process running and decide how it restarts if it exits. The module’s documented static-pull behavior can start a pull when NGINX starts, and event hooks can launch external programs, but these are building blocks rather than an end-to-end uptime guarantee.
- Container and host: Plan for container restarts, host reboots, updates, storage, cooling, and power. A server you already own may be adequate; a separate computer is optional, not a YouTube requirement. The cited sources establish no minimum hardware specification or tested model.
- Network and monitoring: Check upload capacity and reachability, monitor the source, container, and YouTube stream health, and arrange alerts that someone will see. A relay cannot compensate for an unavailable source or network.
- Credentials: Keep the stream key out of source control and routine logs, limit who can read deployment secrets, and have a replacement procedure if the key leaks.
- Archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single archive will cover a stream that runs beyond that threshold.
- Rights and channel policies: Only stream material you have the right to use, including music and other included audio or video. Review YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and applicable copyright and channel rules before broadcasting continuously; a working relay does not establish that content is authorized or eligible to remain live.
Troubleshooting
- Publisher cannot connect to the relay: Check that the container is running, port 1935 is published if using the example command, the publisher uses the right host and application path, and host or network firewall rules permit the connection.
- Local ingest works but YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the exact server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, the outbound push path, and the selected protocol. Confirm RTMPS support rather than assuming a plain RTMP push is encrypted or compatible.
- YouTube preview reports poor stream health: Compare the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with YouTube’s current guidance. Test representative movement and sound, then adjust the relevant setting rather than changing several variables at once.
- The broadcast stops after a source or host interruption: Determine whether the source process, container, host, or network failed. Configure and verify recovery at the component that stopped; the module’s relay features alone do not guarantee automatic recovery of the whole pipeline.
- Video works but sound is absent or problematic: Check that the source is sending audio and that the audio codec and parameters are supported and configured as intended; use YouTube’s recommended stereo AAC settings as a starting point.
- The stream runs but the archive is incomplete or absent: Check the stream duration against YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive behavior and do not rely on a single archive for a longer broadcast.
