In Sheets, use version history for spreadsheet-wide revisions or Show edit history for changes to a particular cell; cell history does not show every kind of change.
Choose the right way to track changes
| What you need | Google Docs | Google Sheets | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propose and review edits | Suggesting mode; accept or reject suggestions | No equivalent Docs-style suggestion workflow for cell edits is established here | Do not treat Sheets cell history as a review-and-approval workflow. |
| Inspect saved revisions | Version history | Version history | You need edit permission to browse earlier versions. |
| Inspect a specific area | Show editors for selected text on eligible Workspace plans | Show edit history for an individual cell | Sheets cell history omits some types of change. |
| Receive alerts | Notifications for added or removed content | Notifications for spreadsheet changes or form submissions | Notification emails may not show every change. |
| Return to an earlier state | Restore or copy an earlier version | Restore or copy an earlier version | Restoring a Sheets version clears earlier cell-by-cell history. |
Google describes Sheets version history as a broad counterpart to Excel’s Track Changes for seeing who changed a spreadsheet and when. That is a task-level analogy, not a promise that the tools behave identically. See Google’s data-management guidance.
Track proposed edits in Google Docs
- Open the document on a computer.
- At the top right, select Editing, then choose Suggesting.
- Make the proposed changes. Added text appears in a different color, and deleted text is crossed out.
- To review a suggestion, select it and accept or reject it. To review suggestions in bulk, choose Tools > Review suggested edits, then accept or reject all.
You need commenter or editor permission to suggest edits. If Suggesting is unavailable, ask the document owner to share it with you as a Commenter or Editor. Google’s steps are in Suggest edits in Google Docs.
Suggestions and version history serve different purposes
Suggestions are proposed changes awaiting review. Version history shows saved earlier states of the file. Use suggestions when a collaborator needs to approve edits; use version history to inspect how a document changed over time.

Working with Microsoft Office files
Google says Office tracked changes become suggestions when the file is imported into Google Docs editors, and Docs suggestions become tracked changes when converted to Office. Conversion may change how a review workflow is represented, so check the converted file before relying on it for final approval.
Find and restore earlier versions in Docs or Sheets
- Open the document or spreadsheet on a computer. You need edit permission to browse earlier versions.
- Click the Last edit or Version history control near the top right. In Sheets, you can also use File > Version history > See version history.
- Select a version to inspect who updated the file and what changed. In Sheets, the comparison may hide rows that were not modified; select Show unmodified rows if you need to see them.
- To leave version history without changing the current file, click Back. To make an earlier state current, choose Restore this version. To work from an earlier state without replacing the current one, make a copy of that version.
For the version-history steps and access details, see Google’s guide to finding what changed in a file and its Sheets collaboration guidance.

Preserve Sheets cell history before restoring
Restoring an earlier spreadsheet version clears cell-by-cell edit history for changes made before the restore. If you may need those details later, make a copy of the earlier version instead of restoring it over the active spreadsheet.
Identify who edited selected text in Docs
Google’s selected-text Show editors feature is limited to Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Education Plus customers. It is not available to every Google account or plan. Version history remains the broader way to inspect saved revisions.

See who changed a specific cell in Google Sheets
- Open the spreadsheet on a computer.
- Right-click the cell you want to investigate.
- Select Show edit history to review the cell’s available changes.
Cell history is narrower than spreadsheet version history. Google says it may not show inserted or deleted rows and columns, formatting changes, formula-driven changes, or changes made before an earlier spreadsheet version was restored. Use file version history when you need broader context around a revision.

Google Sheets
Open Tools > Notification settings > Edit notifications. Choose whether to be notified about any changes or form submissions, and select immediate email or a daily digest.
Notification settings apply to the file. Google cautions that emails may not display every change when a file is large or has many edits, so use the file itself for a complete review. In Sheets, editors can see editor usernames; viewers can set notifications but cannot see those usernames. Details are in Google’s notification guide.

Common problems and what to do
- You cannot open version history: Earlier-version browsing requires edit permission. Ask the owner for edit access if you need to inspect revisions.
- You do not see Suggesting: Confirm you have commenter or editor permission. Ask the owner to change your access if necessary.
- A cell’s history looks incomplete: Cell history does not cover every structural, formatting, or formula-driven change. Check spreadsheet version history for broader revisions.
- Cell details disappeared after restoring a spreadsheet: Restoring clears cell-by-cell history for changes from before the restore. If preserving those details matters, make a copy of a version before restoring.
- An email notification does not show a change: Notifications are alerts, not a complete audit record. Open the document or spreadsheet and inspect its suggestions or version history.
- You are on Android and need version history: Google’s Android guidance directs users to open the document on a computer to see version history. Do not assume the computer instructions are available in the mobile app.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, not a change-tracking tool for Google Docs or Sheets. If your adjacent task is capturing a page as an image or PDF, one GET request can return a screenshot. Before capture, it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Example with cURL (replace the target URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo for the service details, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
