GraphQL is a query language and API specification; REST is an architectural style for designing networked systems. They are not equivalent technologies or mutually exclusive products. GraphQL lets a client select fields from a schema in an operation, while a REST API typically exposes resources through URIs and returns representations using a uniform interface, often HTTP.
Both can work well. The right choice depends on what clients need to retrieve, how the server is built and governed, and how the system should use HTTP semantics and caching.
What GraphQL and REST mean
GraphQL is a schema and query language
A GraphQL service describes its capabilities through a schema: its types, fields, and available operations. A client sends an operation that starts at the schema’s query root and selects the fields it wants. It can select nested fields on related objects, and the response data follows that selection. A response can include both data and errors.
For example, a client might ask for a customer’s name and the titles of that customer’s recent orders in one operation. The schema determines whether those fields and relationships are available; the client cannot request arbitrary fields the service does not expose. A schema may also define mutations for changes and subscriptions for ongoing updates, but a query root is the only root operation type required by the GraphQL specification.

REST is an architectural style
REST describes constraints for networked systems, not a query syntax or a particular protocol. A REST design centers on resources identified by URIs and representations transferred through a uniform interface. HTTP is commonly used to provide resource and method semantics, such as retrieving a representation with GET or making a change with an appropriate method.
A REST endpoint commonly defines the representation it returns. Some APIs also offer filters, expansions, or other ways to customize a response. The label “REST” alone does not prove that an API follows every constraint in Roy Fielding’s architectural style, so evaluate the API’s actual behavior.

GraphQL vs. REST at a glance
| Decision point | GraphQL | REST |
|---|---|---|
| What the client addresses | A schema and operation, commonly sent to one service URL | A resource identified by a URI, using methods and representations |
| How response fields are chosen | The client selects available fields, including nested related data | The endpoint commonly defines the representation; API-specific filters or expansions may also be available |
| Related data and requests | One operation can ask for related fields together | Related resources may require multiple requests, depending on endpoint design |
| Caching considerations | Different operations can share a URL, so a URL-only cache key may not distinguish responses | HTTP caching uses method, target URI, and response directives; GET responses are cacheable subject to applicable rules |
| Server-side considerations | Schema design, resolver work, batching, and query execution policy matter | Resource design, endpoint implementation, representations, and consistent method semantics matter |
| Governance | Teams need a coherent, maintained schema and policies for executing queries | Teams need consistent resource, representation, and method design |
Does GraphQL use HTTP?
It can, and commonly does. GraphQL is transport agnostic; the GraphQL over HTTP specification maps GraphQL request and response semantics onto HTTP. Some subscription implementations use alternatives such as WebSockets. REST is also commonly implemented over HTTP, but REST and HTTP are not synonyms: REST is an architectural style, while HTTP is a protocol.
Is GraphQL faster than REST?
Not inherently. Field selection can help a client avoid receiving unused fields, and one operation can combine related data that might otherwise require multiple REST requests. That can reduce payload size or client-server round trips in a particular application. It does not guarantee lower latency or less total backend work: GraphQL resolvers may trigger repeated data loads, and a server still has to fetch and assemble the requested result.

Performance depends on the actual client requests and server implementation. GraphQL services may use batching to avoid repeated loads and may apply query limits or persisted-query policies. REST performance likewise depends on endpoint design, data access, and representations. Compare representative operations under your own workload rather than treating either architecture as automatically faster.
How caching differs in practice
Neither approach is inherently uncachable. HTTP caching rules depend on the method, target URI, response directives, and other conditions; GET responses can be cacheable subject to those rules. In REST designs, distinct resource URIs often fit naturally into URI-based cache strategies.

With GraphQL, multiple operations may be sent to the same URL. A cache that keys only on that URL could therefore confuse different results unless the operation is accounted for. Teams commonly address this with query-aware or application-level caching. GraphQL clients, resolvers, persisted queries, and responses can all be part of a caching strategy, but those are implementation choices rather than automatic properties of GraphQL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to choose each approach
GraphQL may fit when
- Several clients need different combinations of fields from the same domain data.
- Clients frequently need related data together and endpoint-by-endpoint requests are awkward.
- Your team can maintain a clear schema and put suitable controls around query execution and resolver work.
REST may fit when
- Your domain maps cleanly to identifiable resources and standard HTTP methods and representations.
- Resource-oriented endpoints meet client needs without excessive requests or unwanted response data.
- Your architecture benefits from straightforward use of HTTP semantics and URI-oriented caching.
Decide from the system you have to operate
Map the client’s real data needs, then assess server workload, cache behavior, schema or resource governance, and the conventions already used by your systems. A hybrid system can also expose GraphQL for some client needs while retaining REST endpoints for others. There is no universal winner; the appropriate design is the one your clients need and your team can implement and operate reliably.

A concrete API example
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its single-request endpoint is a practical example of an HTTP GET API: the client supplies a URL and receives a screenshot or PDF. That is a different design from GraphQL field selection; the example illustrates the resource-and-request style, not a claim that all REST APIs behave identically.
For API details, see ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation. This cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe’s website:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a clean screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
