Read the logs before changing timeouts, and check whether ArchiveBox skipped the URL because it was already indexed. A blank or incomplete result can also be a loading, login, access, or site-compatibility problem—not necessarily a JavaScript execution failure.
Start by identifying what failed
ArchiveBox can produce several different artifacts from a page: rendered DOM HTML, SingleFile HTML, a Chrome screenshot, a PDF, and a Wget copy. These are not interchangeable, and a site may work with one method but not another. First look at ArchiveBox stdout or the Web UI and note which outputs were produced and which are missing or incomplete. The official troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking dependencies and browser reachability.
- No new snapshot or visible processing: The URL may already be indexed and skipped by only-new behavior.
- Chrome extractor errors: Check ArchiveBox’s browser resolution and version information.
- SingleFile, readability, or Node errors: Check the JavaScript-side extractor packages managed by ArchiveBox.
- A snapshot exists but looks blank or partial: Identify which artifact is affected; the cause may differ by capture method.
- Content appears only after a delay, scroll, click, or login: Determine what the live page requires before tuning generic timeouts.
Run the dependency checks
Resolve Chrome through ArchiveBox
From your ArchiveBox data directory, run:
archivebox install chrome
archivebox versionArchiveBox uses abxpkg to resolve a compatible host browser or managed browser build. Review archivebox version for the selected provider, browser version, and projected path. Prefer this supported resolver over pointing ArchiveBox at an unrelated browser executable unless documentation for your installed release tells you otherwise. Install JavaScript extractor packages when logs call for them
If the error names Node support, singlefile, or readability, install those through ArchiveBox rather than relying on a separate global npm setup:

archivebox install node singlefile readability
archivebox versionCheck the resulting version output and retry the capture. Installing these packages is relevant to those dependency errors; it will not fix an inaccessible page, a login requirement, or a skipped repeat URL.
Confirm the right capture plugin ran
Chrome is required for DOM, SingleFile, screenshot, and other browser-backed plugins in the current ArchiveBox plugin marketplace. Inspect the run’s selected plugin list and relevant enabled settings. ArchiveBox configuration can be supplied with archivebox config, ArchiveBox.conf, or environment variables; the plugin whitelist can be used to target a particular capture method. Exact plugin names and settings may vary with the installed release, so verify them against that version’s documentation.

Change timeouts only when the logs support it
TIMEOUT caps an extractor invocation per snapshot; individual plugins can also have their own <PLUGIN>_TIMEOUT settings. If logs show that a slow page or extractor timed out, increase the relevant limit and recapture. The configuration documentation gives 30–3000 seconds as a recommended range and warns that values below 5 seconds can cause Chrome hangs and broader failures. Treat these as release-specific configuration details and confirm the applicable settings for your installed version.
A longer timeout only gives an extractor more time. It does not make a blocked page reachable, authenticate a session, trigger a necessary click, or guarantee that delayed content will be included.

Check dynamic loading and access requirements
Content loaded by scrolling or waiting
Inspect the live page to see when the missing content appears. For scroll-driven lists, the marketplace documents an infinite-scroll expansion plugin. For screenshots, it documents a wait-for-text option that can wait for a known phrase. These are options to try, not guarantees for every site. If the page needs a click, a login, or another interaction, simple navigation and waiting may not reproduce the state you see in your browser.
Reachability, automation blocks, and authentication
Open the target URL in an ordinary browser and confirm it loads. Then compare that result with the capture errors. If the site requires authentication, ArchiveBox’s official site describes importing a Chrome profile or using a dedicated persona for private content; consult its official documentation and product information for the applicable workflow. Do not assume an automation block or access restriction is a timing problem.

Force a fresh capture of an existing URL
If ArchiveBox already has the URL, request a recapture with:
archivebox add --no-only-new URLReplace URL with the target page. This is the documented route when only-new behavior would otherwise skip an indexed URL. Do not move or delete the archive/ tree to try to defeat deduplication.

Compare outputs to locate the failure

If a screenshot succeeds while a DOM artifact is missing, that points to a different failure location than if all Chrome-backed outputs fail; it is a diagnostic clue, not proof. ArchiveBox cautions that sites do not all archive effectively with every method and recommends combining methods where appropriate. Keep capture and replay security separate
A successful capture and a safe replay are different concerns. ArchiveBox’s configuration documentation warns that dangerous full-replay modes can run archived JavaScript on the same origin as the admin UI and should not be exposed on a public hostname. Do not loosen replay security settings as a shortcut for a capture failure; diagnose the capture path and retain a mode appropriate to your deployment. See the configuration guidance.

When to escalate an unresolved failure
If Chrome and relevant extractor packages are installed, the page is reachable, and errors persist, report a reproducible case through the official troubleshooting route. Include:
