Use CDP when you need Chrome-specific capture controls such as clipping or capture beyond the viewport; use Selenium when screenshots are part of a larger browser test suite, especially one that may run across browsers or remotely. Neither is established as universally faster or more accurate: test representative pages in the environment where you will run captures.
How CDP and Selenium take screenshots
CDP exposes the Page.captureScreenshot command directly. It returns a Base64-encoded image and supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats, JPEG quality, a viewport clip, and an option to capture beyond the viewport. The exact current parameters are in the CDP Page domain reference.
Selenium provides screenshot operations within WebDriver: TakeScreenshot captures the current browsing context, while TakeElementScreenshot captures an element. WebDriver’s screenshot endpoint also returns Base64-encoded data. Selenium’s window and tab documentation includes examples for saving screenshots.
Which should you choose?

Choose CDP if the task is Chrome-specific and you need its protocol-level capture options. Choose Selenium if a screenshot is one step in a WebDriver test or you need the broader browser and execution model. Consider WebDriver BiDi when cross-browser event-driven automation is the requirement. Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describes the BiDi approach; the page was last modified 2024-11-07.

Capture with CDP
CDP is a protocol rather than a single command-line screenshot utility, so the exact connection setup depends on how you launch and connect to Chrome. Once connected to a page target, enable the Page domain and call Page.captureScreenshot. The following is the command shape; send it through your CDP WebSocket client and decode the returned data field from Base64 to write the image:

To capture a region, pass a clip rectangle using the current protocol schema. For JPEG, use format":"jpeg" and provide quality as documented; WebP is also a supported format. Capture with Selenium
This Python example uses Selenium’s Chrome WebDriver API to navigate, save a screenshot of the current context, and close the browser. Install Selenium and ensure a compatible Chrome browser and driver setup are available in the execution environment.

Make screenshot results repeatable
A screenshot can change because of the browser build, viewport, content, or page state, even when the capture call is unchanged. For repeatable visual checks, control the relevant inputs in your own environment:

- Pin the browser version and use a matching driver where applicable.
- Set viewport dimensions and device scale factor deliberately.
- Keep fonts and test data consistent.
- Wait for the page’s required content and settle animations or other changing UI before capture.
- Run comparisons in the same CI or production-like environment used for the intended workflow.
Chrome for Testing provides versioned browser downloads and matching ChromeDriver releases, which Chrome documents as supporting reproducible test environments. CDP’s tip-of-tree schema, by contrast, can change and carries no backward-compatibility guarantee, so version and validate the protocol usage alongside the browser.

The official documentation establishes capabilities and architecture, not a controlled head-to-head result for screenshot speed, pixel fidelity, or flakiness. There is no evidence-based universal winner on those measures. If those factors decide your choice, benchmark representative pages with the same browser build, viewport, readiness conditions, and infrastructure that your deployment will use.

Also distinguish capture-tool behavior from page behavior: delayed content, changing data, animations, and environment differences can affect what a screenshot contains. Validate the captured output on the sites and configurations that matter to your use case rather than assuming the API alone determines consistency.
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
- The CDP command fails or returns an unexpected schema error: check the protocol version and the current
Page.captureScreenshotparameter schema. The live tip-of-tree protocol may change; pin and validate the browser/protocol combination. - The saved CDP image is not a valid image file: decode the response’s Base64
datavalue before writing bytes to disk. Writing the encoded text itself does not create the image. - A screenshot is blank or misses page content: confirm that navigation and the content you need have completed before capture. For dynamic pages, wait for an application-specific selector or readiness condition.
- Selenium cannot start Chrome: verify that Chrome is installed and that the driver/browser versions are compatible. Chrome for Testing publishes versioned browser builds with matching ChromeDriver releases.
- An element screenshot fails or captures the wrong region: confirm that the locator identifies the intended element and that it is present and rendered before requesting its screenshot.
- Visual comparisons differ between runs: check viewport, device scale factor, browser build, fonts, page data, readiness, and animation state; control these variables before attributing the difference to CDP or Selenium.
