The exact missing name and the stack trace usually show whether the problem is your application, npm’s installer, a transitive dependency, or the PhantomJS binary.
Identify which lookup failed
Read the complete error, especially the quoted identifier and the first stack frames that point into project or package files. Node’s CommonJS resolver looks for a required package or file from the requiring module’s location, checking nearby and parent node_modules directories. It is not the same lookup as finding a command-line executable through PATH. See the Node.js module resolution documentation.

These errors can appear during one command but have different causes. Do not treat a PATH warning as proof that Node cannot load a package, or treat a missing Node module as proof that the PhantomJS executable is absent.
Fix a missing Node package in the project that uses it
- Confirm the project directory. Run the install and application command from the project that declares and uses the dependency. Check the spelling of the module name in the error and in the code that requires it.
- Check whether it is declared and installed. npm’s guidance is to install a package that the project needs and has not installed. Follow npm’s instructions for using packages in a project, and make sure the dependency is available in the project environment running the application.
- Rerun the command from the relevant project context. If the error persists, use the stack trace to establish which file is requiring the module and whether it is a direct or nested dependency.
A global package installation does not necessarily satisfy an import from application code: the resolver searches from the requiring module through nearby and parent node_modules directories. Installing into an unrelated global location is therefore not a reliable fix for a project dependency.

When the error comes from npm’s installer
If the command fails before your application starts, inspect the stack trace before changing application dependencies. The missing module may be needed by the install script itself or by one of its dependencies. For example, a historical phantomjs-prebuilt report showed Cannot find module 'throttleit' inside a nested request-progress dependency. That is not the same as application code failing to find phantomjs-prebuilt. The report is an environment-specific example, not a universal diagnosis: issue #599.
Another historical report described npm failing to load the package’s install.js on Windows. The maintainers suggested an npm bug or environment misconfiguration, but the cause was uncertain; it does not establish the cause of a similar error on another machine. Record the operating system, Node and npm versions, working directory, exact command, and full error before deciding what to change: issue #302.

When the message says PhantomJS is not on PATH
PATH is the list of directories a process searches for executable commands. Check the environment of the process that actually launches PhantomJS—not only the terminal where installation ran—and verify the executable’s location. Then inspect the rest of the installation output.
In one historical install log, “PhantomJS not found on PATH” was followed by extraction of the binary and a recorded location under the project’s node_modules/phantomjs-prebuilt tree. In that report, the warning alone did not show that setup had failed. Read the full log and verify whether the calling process can access the actual executable path: historical install log.

Troubleshoot without guessing
- Missing name is a package your application imports: check spelling, project context, and whether the package is installed and declared for that project.
- Missing name is not PhantomJS: follow the stack frames to the package issuing the failing
require(); it may be a transitive installer dependency. - Failure points to
install.js: treat it as an installation-stage problem. Capture the complete error and environment details rather than assuming the application dependency is at fault. - Only a PATH warning appears: continue through the log and verify the binary path and launch-process environment before concluding installation failed.
- Considering an old workaround: the cited issue reports concern historical package and runtime environments. They do not establish present-day compatibility, registry availability, or that force-installing an old dependency is safe. Avoid applying such a workaround without confirming it addresses your specific failure.

Does “PhantomJS not found on PATH” mean the npm package is missing?
Not necessarily. PATH concerns executable lookup; a “Cannot find module” error concerns Node’s package or file resolution. Check the exact message and stack trace.
