First establish whether the WebGL app initialized and drew to its canvas; then compare headed and headless runs, check which Chromium headless mode is active, and verify that the host can provide the expected GPU or display setup. The right fix depends on which layer failed.
1. Confirm the WebGL page rendered before capture
Playwright’s screenshot API captures the page output; it cannot make an uninitialized scene draw. Wait for an application-level ready signal or a meaningful assertion that indicates rendering has occurred, rather than assuming that a fixed delay means WebGL is ready. See the Playwright Page API.
- Check that the expected canvas exists and has non-zero dimensions.
- Wait for the app’s scene-ready state or another reliable render condition.
- Record browser console errors, page errors, and failed network requests.
- Distinguish a canvas that never drew from pixels that disappeared only in the screenshot.
A canvas element’s presence alone is not proof that its WebGL scene rendered. If the page is already blank before capture, investigate app initialization, assets, and runtime errors before changing screenshot options.
2. Compare headed and headless runs
Capture the same page in headed mode and in the failing headless run. Keep the browser build, viewport, app state, and test data fixed so the comparison isolates execution mode as much as possible. If only one run is blank, that narrows the problem toward the browser mode or host rendering configuration; it does not prove a single universal cause.

Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For reliable visual comparisons, create and check baselines in a consistent environment. Its guidance is in Visual comparisons.
3. Check which Chromium headless mode Playwright uses
Playwright’s default headless execution uses a separate Chromium headless shell. To try Chromium’s new headless mode, set the project’s channel to 'chromium'. The modes are not guaranteed to behave identically, so treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not an automatic fix. The Playwright browser guide describes the distinction.

});Run the same failing test with and without this channel setting, preserving the other conditions. If the result changes, focus next on differences in browser/headless and GPU setup.
4. Verify GPU and display availability on Linux
Headless Chromium can use a local GPU in some circumstances, but availability depends on the machine and configuration. Chromium’s headless GPU guidance says --enable-gpu prevents Chromium from forcing software rendering. On Linux, default OpenGL autodetection requires an X11 server and DISPLAY. The document also notes that --use-angle=vulkan has worked in some Linux setups; it is not a universal remedy.

- Check whether the CI process has the expected display server and
DISPLAYvalue if relying on Linux OpenGL autodetection. - Verify GPU and driver initialization in the actual test environment.
- Experiment with GPU-related launch arguments only after checking the installed Chromium version and Playwright’s supported launch-options interface.
- Change one variable at a time; piling on unrelated flags makes the cause harder to identify.
As Chromium’s documentation puts it, “Headless Chrome can utilize the local machine’s GPU, at least in some circumstances.” That qualification matters: enabling a flag does not guarantee that a particular Linux host has working GPU access.
5. Make screenshot checks reproducible
Once the page renders, pin the Playwright/browser build and keep visual baselines in the same OS and hardware environment used for comparison. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion can support visual regression checks, but a baseline from a different browser mode or machine may differ for reasons unrelated to an app change.
