For recurring screenshots of a URL list, use shot-scraper for capture and pair it with a scheduler. It supports command-line and multi-page YAML captures, and its project documents a GitHub Actions workflow. For a server you control, run the same capture command with cron or a self-hosted job manager. Choose Playwright instead when captures need custom browser interactions or belong in an existing automation project.
How the pieces fit together
A screenshot tool renders a page and saves an image; a scheduler decides when to run that tool. They are separate parts of the system. You also need to decide where the job runs and where its output and logs go.
- Define the capture: list the URLs, output names, viewport sizes, waits, and any page actions.
- Prepare the execution environment: install the capture tool and browser dependencies on the workflow runner or server that will run the job.
- Test manually: check the resulting image, dimensions, page state, and output path before scheduling it.
- Schedule and retain: invoke the tested command on a recurring cadence, then choose how long to keep images and logs.
The workflow or scheduler controls the cadence; a capture command by itself does not run periodically.

Use shot-scraper for a repeatable URL list
shot-scraper is a good starting point when each run captures a known set of pages with similar settings. Its documentation covers installation, browser setup, command-line captures, and multi-shot configuration. The project also describes a GitHub Actions workflow that installs the tool and browser, captures configured shots, and commits images to the repository.

Install and test on the machine that will run the job
- Install the Python package with
pip install shot-scraper. - Install its browser with
shot-scraper install. - Configure the URLs and capture settings using the documented CLI or multi-shot YAML approach.
- Run a capture manually and confirm the page state, dimensions, and file location.
Follow the shot-scraper stable documentation for the current CLI and configuration details; exact options depend on the capture you need.
Choose a runner and set the cadence
For a hosted workflow, use the project’s GitHub Actions guide as a starting point. It documents installation, multi-shot execution, and committing screenshots to the repository. Set the recurring schedule in the workflow configuration you use; the example is not, by itself, a promise of a particular cadence.

For a server you control, invoke the tested shot-scraper command from cron or a job manager. Keep the command, browser installation, working directory, output destination, and logs available to the account that runs the scheduled job. The scheduler is responsible for the timing; shot-scraper handles capture.
Use Playwright when the page needs browser automation
Playwright is more suitable when a screenshot requires application-specific actions, custom waits, or integration into an existing browser automation project. Its screenshot API supports viewport, full-page, and element captures. You supply the browser flow and invoke it from cron, a workflow runner, or another scheduler.

See the Playwright screenshots documentation for API patterns. This route offers more control than a screenshot-oriented CLI, but leaves you responsible for maintaining the script, browser environment, and scheduling configuration.

Cronbase describes itself as an open-source, self-hosted cron manager. Use it as the scheduling and monitoring layer, paired with a capture tool such as shot-scraper or a Playwright script. The reviewed project description does not establish a screenshot-specific integration, so verify that its command environment can run your chosen browser and capture process.

Keep scheduled captures comparable
If screenshots will be compared over time, control the environment as well as the URL and capture settings. Playwright documents that output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode; see its visual comparisons documentation.
- Keep the operating system and browser build consistent where possible.
- Use the same viewport, waits, and page actions for each run.
- Choose an output location and retention policy that fit your access and history needs. Committing images to a repository provides version history, but may not suit every retention or access requirement.
- Plan for browser installation and updates, logs, failed captures, timeouts, and storage. The projects do not prescribe one universal operations policy.
