Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To restart a 24/7 lecture stream after OBS crashes, use a monitor outside OBS to detect that the program has exited, wait briefly, check that no OBS instance remains, and launch it again with the right scene collection, profile, and output flag. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help when OBS is still running but loses its connection; it cannot restart the OBS process after a crash.
What automatic crash recovery needs
Recovery has two separate jobs: an external supervisor must notice that OBS has stopped, and the next OBS launch must know which configuration to load and whether to stream, record, or both. OBS launch parameters handle startup selection and output; they do not watch for crashes. A script running inside OBS or a WebSocket client controlling it is likewise not a dependable crash monitor once the OBS process has terminated. OBS describes its automation and extension options in its Launch Parameters and Developer Guide.
- External supervisor: monitors the process and starts OBS again after it exits.
- OBS launch parameters: choose the collection, profile, scene, and desired output on startup.
- Available dependencies: the restarted process still needs accessible media, credentials, network, capture devices, and streaming endpoint.
Prepare OBS to start the lecture output
Save and verify the scene collection and profile you intend to use. Confirm that the lecture media and other sources are available without interactive setup, and that the streaming credentials and local recording destination remain accessible in the user session that will run OBS.
OBS documents --startstreaming and --startrecording, as well as --collection, --profile, and --scene. For example, a launch could use:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
obs64.exe --collection "Lecture" --profile "24-7" --startstreaming
To start local recording instead, use --startrecording in place of --startstreaming. If both outputs are required, verify the desired behavior with the installed OBS version before relying on it; the documented options should not be treated as a guarantee that every combination works unattended on every release. The example names are placeholders for your actual collection and profile. The OBS launch-parameter page is dated 2021-05-30, so check its options against your installed version.

Set up an external monitor on Windows
Windows Task Scheduler can launch a program or script at system startup or in response to an event. Microsoft documents ONSTART and ONEVENT triggers, but its task-scheduling reference does not provide an OBS-specific process-exit watcher. Use a supervisor script or service wrapper that monitors OBS, rather than assuming that a scheduled task trigger alone detects every crash. See Microsoft’s schtasks create reference.
- Choose the account and session. Run the supervisor under the same Windows user context that can access OBS settings, media files, credentials, and any capture devices the lecture setup uses.
- Configure the monitor. It should check whether OBS is running, wait briefly after detecting an exit, verify that no OBS process remains, and then start OBS with the launch arguments for the intended collection, profile, and output. Add logging and safeguards against duplicate launches or rapid restart loops.
- Use Task Scheduler if it starts your supervisor. Create a task with an appropriate trigger, such as system startup, and an action that runs the supervisor executable, script, or batch file. Set the task’s “Start in…” working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe; OBS specifically calls this out for scheduled or automated Windows launches. - Confirm how the task runs. Check that the selected account and session can access the OBS configuration and required sources after sign-in or reboot. A process restart cannot restore files, devices, credentials, or a network connection that the session cannot access.
Task Scheduler is one possible part of the arrangement, not the whole crash-recovery mechanism. The supervisor implementation and its service or session settings depend on the host setup; the cited documentation does not certify a particular watchdog or wrapper.

Choose the right recovery method
| Approach | What it does | Limit to account for |
|---|---|---|
| External process supervisor or service wrapper | Can watch whether OBS is alive and relaunch it after an exit, with delay, retry limits, and logging configured by the operator. | Select and configure it for the host OS and user-session needs; validate access to desktop capture, credentials, and sources after restart. No specific supervisor is certified by the cited sources. |
| Windows Task Scheduler | Can start a program, script, or batch action at system startup or on an event. | The cited Microsoft reference does not specify an OBS process-exit watcher or an OBS-specific crash trigger. |
| OBS launch parameters | Can select a scene collection, profile, or scene and request streaming or recording at process startup. | They do not monitor OBS or resolve unavailable credentials, sources, hardware, network, or endpoint problems. |
| OBS scripts or WebSocket | Can extend or control a running OBS instance. | They are not a substitute for a monitor outside OBS after the process exits. |
Test crash recovery before depending on it
- First verify that OBS launches manually with the intended collection, profile, scene, and output flag.
- In a planned maintenance window, stop OBS cleanly and confirm the supervisor starts it as expected.
- In a separate controlled test, terminate OBS unexpectedly and check that the supervisor waits, avoids a duplicate instance, and relaunches the intended output.
- Test a temporary stream connection loss separately. That tests reconnect behavior in a still-running OBS process, not crash recovery.
- Inspect OBS logs, the supervisor’s logs, the stream, and any local recording file. Do not run crash tests during a live lecture without a recovery window.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
- OBS restarts but does not go live or record: check that the correct startup flag is present and that the intended profile, collection, and stream credentials load in the supervisor’s user context.
- The task runs but OBS cannot find files or settings: check the account and working directory. For automated Windows launches, set “Start in…” to OBS’s executable folder.
- Multiple OBS windows or repeated restarts appear: add a delay and verify that no OBS process remains before relaunching; configure limits or backoff so a persistent failure does not create a rapid restart loop.
- A crash prompt interrupts startup: OBS’s crash-handling localization describes an improper-shutdown dialog and a Safe Mode option that disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets. Behavior can vary by release and OS. During a controlled test, inspect prompts and logs, and check plugins or scripts if startup stalls.
- The process returns but the stream or recording is still unavailable: investigate the separate dependency that failed—network, streaming endpoint, media path, credentials, capture device, or recording destination. Relaunching OBS alone cannot repair it.
- The computer or connection is unavailable: a process supervisor on that same machine cannot recover from a powered-off computer, failed network, or unavailable endpoint. External monitoring can help reveal those broader outages; it does not make the machine available.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the lecture is a pre-recorded video being streamed to YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS and a local computer running. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
- Nothing has to stay on at home for the cloud stream to continue.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
