CloudConvert handles a webpage and a downloadable PDF or other file URL differently. Use capture-website when CloudConvert must render a webpage as a PDF; use import/url followed by convert when the URL already points to a downloadable file. A timeout message alone does not identify which layer failed: CloudConvert documents a default five-hour timeout for the website-capture task, but that is not the same as a timeout imposed by your browser, SDK, proxy, or API caller.
First confirm what the URL points to
| URL contains | CloudConvert operation | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A webpage that needs to be rendered | capture-website with output_format: pdf |
CloudConvert opens and renders the page, then produces a PDF. CloudConvert’s Capture Website documentation describes the task and its timeout setting. |
| A direct link to a downloadable file | import/url, then convert |
CloudConvert downloads the file from the URL and processes it. The import/url documentation and API quickstart describe this job flow. |
A link that opens a page in your browser is not necessarily a direct file URL. If the desired PDF is already available as a file, import that file rather than asking CloudConvert to render the surrounding webpage. Conversely, importing a webpage URL does not mean CloudConvert will print the rendered page to PDF.
What CloudConvert’s timeout setting means
For capture-website, CloudConvert documents a timeout in seconds and says it defaults to five hours. Its documentation describes that value as the time after which the task will be cancelled. This is the capture task’s configured limit; it does not establish why an individual job failed or describe the waiting limit of the software making the API request.
In an API integration, there can be separate limits at the task, SDK, HTTP client, application, or proxy layer. Compare the task’s configured timeout with the caller’s own request and wait settings, and use that caller’s logs to determine whether it stopped waiting before CloudConvert finished. Do not raise the task timeout simply because a client reported a timeout: first identify which component produced the message.

Diagnose the specific failed job
- Open the job and inspect its tasks. Record each task’s status and the exact error message before changing settings. CloudConvert’s API quickstart illustrates the job structure and the import, conversion, and export stages: https://cloudconvert.com/api/v2/quickstart.
- Verify the operation matches the URL. For a page to render, check for
capture-websiteand PDF output. For a file to download and convert, check forimport/urlfollowed byconvert. - Check access to the source. Determine whether the URL is reachable without a login or special headers. CloudConvert documents additional headers for URL imports that require authorization. Its HTML-to-PDF page also describes custom authorization headers for protected URL resources. Supported headers do not guarantee that every protected or restricted site will be accessible.
- Check whether page content appears late. If the page loads first and fills in content afterward, CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF documentation describes waiting for a custom CSS selector before generating the PDF. Choose a selector that appears when the needed content is ready. This can help with delayed rendering; it is not a general fix for inaccessible pages or every timeout.
- Compare task and caller timing. For API use, check the task timeout alongside the calling application’s HTTP timeout, SDK settings, proxy limits, and how long the caller waits for completion. Treat these as separate settings.
- Check whether the result link expired. CloudConvert says tasks are deleted after 24 hours and their exported URLs are available only during that period. An expired export link is a result-download problem, not proof that capture timed out. See its export/url documentation.
CloudConvert documents asynchronous processing with webhook notification by default on its HTML-to-PDF page, and also advertises a synchronous API. For long-running integrations, check the mode your implementation uses and retain task status and error details so a caller-side wait limit is not mistaken for a failed capture.
When adjusting settings may help—and when it may not
- A task reaches its configured capture limit: review whether the chosen task timeout is appropriate, but use the job status and error details to confirm that this is the limit being reached.
- The source needs authentication: configure the documented authorization headers for the relevant URL import or protected page resource.
- Page content is inserted after initial load: consider the documented CSS-selector wait option for HTML-to-PDF capture.
- The caller gives up first: adjust or redesign the caller’s wait and polling behavior based on its own logs; changing CloudConvert’s capture timeout alone will not extend a separate client or proxy limit.
- The page is inaccessible or fails to load: a longer task timeout is not evidence-based remedy by itself. The documentation describes supported operations and settings, not the behavior of every target website or the cause of an individual failure.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot rather than a paginated PDF, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API. For example, the cURL request below saves a WebP shot of a webpage; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.
