The YouTube RTMP backup server URL is a second destination where an encoder can send a live feed. Used in a configured redundant setup, it gives YouTube another incoming feed to use if the primary encoder or route fails. The URL alone does not create redundancy or guarantee an uninterrupted, seamless switch: you need an encoder workflow that sends to the backup and should test that YouTube’s player rolls over.
What the backup server URL is for
A server URL—also called an ingestion URL—tells your encoder where to send the live video. YouTube provides a primary ingestion destination and, for supported configurations, a separate backup ingestion destination. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation defines the backup as an alternate ingestion URL and says you may simultaneously send it the content being sent to the primary.
That makes the backup URL one part of a redundant ingest arrangement: YouTube can receive another copy of the feed if the primary publishing path has a problem. It is an address for sending video into YouTube, not a viewer-facing watch URL, a second published stream, or a second stream key.
How the URL, stream key, and backup encoder differ
- Primary server URL: the destination your encoder sends the main feed to.
- Stream key: a separate credential entered in the encoder in the standard RTMP workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions distinguish the server URL from the stream key.
- Backup server URL: an alternate ingestion destination for a redundant feed. It is not itself a second encoder or an automatic failover switch.
- Backup encoder: a second encoding and sending setup used in a failover workflow. YouTube’s testing guidance refers to stopping the primary encoder and checking whether the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
In practical terms, copying the backup URL without configuring an encoder or output workflow to send a feed there does not provide a backup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to configure and test redundant ingest
- Get the values for the intended stream. Open that stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room, or obtain its ingestion values through the official API. Do not reuse a URL from a different stream or protocol.
- Match the URL to the protocol. For RTMP or RTMPS, use the corresponding address shown for the stream. If the stream is configured for HLS, use the HLS address and its displayed backup URL instead.
- Configure the sending workflow. Set the encoder or redundant-output setup to send the matching content to the primary destination and, if you are using redundancy, the backup destination. The YouTube API describes simultaneous sending as an option; whether your encoder supports the workflow depends on its configuration and capabilities.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm YouTube is receiving the expected feed before relying on the setup for a broadcast.
- Rehearse a failure. YouTube Help’s streaming tips say: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable) and make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Check the viewer-facing player rather than assuming that a configured URL has worked.
- Allow enough upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends capacity for the primary feed plus the backup feed and an additional 20% headroom. Its guidance is a recommendation, not a universal guarantee; measure available upload capacity under the actual dual-feed load.
What it can—and cannot—protect against
A backup feed can help when the primary encoder or its route stops sending, provided the backup is already configured and YouTube receives it. It cannot by itself remove shared points of failure. If both feeds depend on the same source, encoder, power supply, or internet connection, a failure in that shared component can affect both. Separate equipment and network routes are design choices; the backup URL does not supply them.
YouTube’s cited instructions advise testing rollover but do not promise a particular switchover time or seamless playback in every configuration. Treat failover as something to validate with your encoder, network, and stream rather than an outcome guaranteed by the address.

RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS: use the matching backup address
YouTube’s API exposes primary and backup ingestion fields for RTMP, DASH, and HLS, as well as separate RTMPS fields. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; YouTube recommends using it as a secure extension. Select the protocol configured for your stream and use the matching address shown for it.
HLS is not simply another name for the RTMP backup workflow. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions direct users to select HLS as the protocol and copy the displayed backup server URL if backup ingestion is needed. HLS sends video segments rather than a continuous stream and has higher latency than RTMP, so the protocols are not interchangeable for every production.
