How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Active While Replacing Its Playlist

Keep the encoder output running while you edit the OBS media playlist. Use VLC Video for multiple files, then verify picture and audio in OBS and YouTube’s preview.

You can change the media playlist without deliberately ending a YouTube Live stream by keeping OBS’s encoder output connected and editing the playlist in OBS. For multiple files, use an OBS VLC Video source; YouTube’s stream key and server URL handle the connection, while the media list lives in OBS. A seamless, interruption-free change is not guaranteed, so check the output before and after editing.

Keep the YouTube connection separate from the media playlist

There are two different things involved: the encoder sends a live feed to YouTube using the stream key and server URL, and an OBS source supplies the media that appears in that feed. Replacing files in the source playlist is an encoder-side change; it is not a YouTube Studio or Live Control Room playlist setting.

Leave the existing encoder output running during the change. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Do not stop the output or reset the stream key as part of an ordinary playlist edit. That preserves the intended live connection, but neither YouTube nor OBS documents a guarantee that changing a playlist live will avoid a brief picture or audio interruption.

Choose the OBS source that matches your playlist

One file that should repeat

Use OBS Media Source for a single media file. Its Loop option repeats that file when playback reaches the end. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The OBS documentation describing these formats is dated January 11, 2022; check the source’s behavior in your installed OBS version if a specific format is important.

Several files in a sequence

Use VLC Video for a multi-item media playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to appear. The documented defaults are Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off. VLC Video also has visibility behavior settings for what happens when the source is no longer visible: stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playing. Confirm the settings you want rather than assuming a hidden source continues in a particular way.

Need OBS source Relevant behavior
Repeat one file Media Source Enable Loop to repeat an individual file.
Play several files VLC Video Supports a playlist, looping, shuffle, and visibility behavior settings; VLC must be installed.

Replace the playlist while the stream is live

  1. Confirm the active stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify the current stream is the one you intend to keep running and that the encoder is connected. Keep its existing stream key and server URL in place.
  2. Check the OBS source. In OBS, confirm the playlist is supplied by the existing VLC Video source. If you need to add one, install VLC first, then add a VLC Video source and configure its media playlist. Use Media Source instead if you are only looping one file.
  3. Edit the media items in the source properties. While OBS output remains active, open the VLC Video source’s properties and change its playlist items. Keep the intended order, loop, shuffle, and visibility behavior settings. The exact live-edit sequence and whether the current item restarts can depend on how the source is edited and on software behavior not specified in OBS’s documentation.
  4. Check the program output and YouTube preview. Inspect OBS’s program output and the Live Control Room preview after the change. Confirm that the expected video appears and that audio is present and at an appropriate level.
  5. Continue monitoring. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality during a stream. Do not leave a changed playlist unattended until you have verified it is playing as intended.

If you need a guaranteed uninterrupted transition, the official documentation does not establish that live playlist edits provide one. Make the change when a brief disruption would be acceptable, and verify the result immediately.

Do not confuse an OBS playlist with YouTube HLS

An OBS VLC Video playlist is a list of program media files. YouTube’s HLS rolling playlist is part of the ingest protocol: it describes video segments being delivered to YouTube, not a queue of videos to replace in OBS.

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second segments in TS format, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. HLS is segment-based and has higher latency than RTMP; it also disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency option. These are protocol-side requirements, not settings for an OBS media playlist. YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP.

Protect a long-running stream recording

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local archive rather than relying only on YouTube’s automatic archive. YouTube also recommends a local recording backup for streams.

Troubleshoot a playlist change

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: VLC is required for the source. Install VLC, then check whether the source is available in OBS.
  • The stream ends or disconnects: Check whether encoder output was stopped. YouTube’s guidance identifies stopping encoder content as the action that ends the stream. Restore the encoder connection using the current stream configuration if needed; do not treat a media-list edit as a reason to change the stream key.
  • The new items do not appear in the program output: Reopen the source properties and verify the playlist items and source visibility. Then inspect OBS’s program output and YouTube’s preview.
  • The playlist order differs from what you expected: Check Shuffle Playlist; OBS documents it as off by default, but the installed source’s current setting is what matters.
  • Playback stops when the source is hidden: Check VLC Video’s visibility behavior setting. It can stop/restart or pause/resume playback, or continue playing while not visible.
  • There is a brief blank, frozen, or silent interval during the edit: The official documentation does not promise gap-free live edits. Check OBS output and YouTube preview, confirm media playback and audio, and allow the source to recover before leaving the stream unattended.
  • The YouTube archive is missing: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording for important programs.
