Use OBS’s built-in Image Slide Show source to rotate still backgrounds automatically during a meditation stream. Add images, set the slide mode to Automatic, choose an interval and transition, and leave Loop enabled. For moving backgrounds, use a looping Media Source for one video file or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. Keep these sources below text and other overlays in the Sources list, then test the complete scene before going live.
Choose the right OBS source for your background
| Source | Best for | Rotation or loop behavior | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image Slide Show | A sequence of still images | Automatic slide changes, configurable timing and transition, optional loop and random order | The simplest built-in option for stills, with control over the visual pace. |
| Media Source | One moving background file | Loop repeats the file | Useful for a single clip; OBS’s cited documentation describes it as a media file source, not a multi-item playlist source. |
| VLC Video Source | A playlist of video clips | Can loop or shuffle the playlist | Requires VLC installed with an architecture compatible with OBS. |
These instructions follow the OBS Project’s Knowledge Base pages for Image Sources, Media Sources, and the Sources Guide, published in 2022. OBS labels can vary by installed version, so check the source properties in your version if a setting differs.
Set up rotating still images
- Add the slideshow. In the scene used for the meditation stream, go to the Sources panel, select the plus button, and choose Image Slide Show. Give it a recognizable name, then add individual image files or a directory containing them.
- Make it advance automatically. In the source properties, set Slide Mode to Automatic. Choose a transition such as Fade. Automatic mode changes images without requiring you to switch scenes.
- Set the timing. Use Time Between Slides to control how long each image displays before the next transition begins. Use Transition Speed to set the transition’s duration. OBS documents defaults of 8,000 ms between slides and 700 ms for transition speed; these are software defaults, not recommended meditation timings. Adjust them to suit your sequence and inspect the cadence in preview.
- Choose the sequence behavior. Leave Loop enabled to return to the first image after the last. Turn on Randomize Playback only if you want images to appear in an unpredictable order; leave it off for a fixed sequence. The Visibility Behaviour setting controls whether the slideshow continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible.
- Check supported images. OBS documents BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG/JPG, and GIF formats for Image Slide Show.
Size the background and keep overlays visible
OBS renders sources higher in the Sources list above sources lower in the list. Put the slideshow or video background below titles, logos, and other overlays. Select the background and use Fit to Screen or Edit Transform to size and position it; inspect the preview for unwanted cropping, letterboxing, or text that becomes hard to read against the image.
Image dimensions and the stream canvas affect whether an image fills the screen or gets cropped. Check the result in the actual scene rather than assuming every background has the right aspect ratio.

Use a looping video instead of still images
Repeat one video file
Add a Media Source from the Sources panel, select the video file, and enable its Loop property to repeat it. Use this when one moving background is enough.
Rotate through a playlist of clips
Add a VLC Video Source, create or select a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to repeat. OBS documents that this setting defaults to On. VLC must be installed for the source to be available; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check the VLC requirement for your installed OBS architecture if the source is missing.

Test the scene and the stream before relying on it
OBS recommends a short test before the first stream. Record locally or run a test stream long enough to see multiple image changes or video loops. Confirm the background fills the intended area, transitions look as expected, overlays remain visible, and playback behaves correctly when the source is hidden and shown.
Source settings alone do not guarantee a continuous broadcast: playback and stream delivery also depend on the computer and network. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing, and its OBS Studio Overview Guide notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. Published in 2021, these guides describe general setup considerations; test your own equipment and connection.

Troubleshoot common background problems
- The stills do not advance: Check that Slide Mode is set to Automatic, then confirm the slide interval and that the source is visible.
- The sequence stops at the last image: Enable Loop in the Image Slide Show properties.
- The image order changes unexpectedly: Turn off Randomize Playback if you need a fixed sequence.
- The background covers captions or branding: Move the background below those sources in the Sources list.
- The image is cropped or has bars: Use Fit to Screen or adjust it with Edit Transform, then review the preview for cropping and letterboxing.
- A video does not repeat: For one file, check the Media Source’s Loop property. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video Source.
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC and verify that its architecture matches OBS; the OBS documentation specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
Check rights to the visual material
OBS’s source documentation explains how to display and loop files; it does not grant rights to use them. Confirm that you have permission to stream each image, GIF, or video, including any music or other material embedded in a clip.
