Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To capture one HTML element, pass a CSS selector to a screenshot API that supports element targeting. The API locates the rendered element and captures its bounds. Use a clip rectangle instead when you need a fixed region of the page rather than an element that may move or change size.
Choose a selector that identifies the right element
Prefer a stable ID or purpose-built attribute over a selector tied to fragile layout details. Before capturing, verify that the selector matches the intended element on the page. A selector can match multiple nodes, and providers do not necessarily resolve those matches the same way.
Also consider whether the element is rendered immediately, hidden until interaction, or loaded lazily. The API must be able to find it in the page state it captures; waiting for the page itself to load does not always mean delayed content is ready.
Capture by selector with a hosted API
Hosted screenshot services accept a URL and selector in a request, then render the page and return an image. The request syntax and edge-case behavior depend on the provider.

Browserless
Browserless documents a top-level selector field on its REST screenshot request, alongside url and outside the options object. Its documentation says the API waits for the element and crops the capture to its bounding box, so you do not need to calculate clip coordinates yourself. It also documents clipping and other rendering options. See the Browserless Screenshot API documentation for request details.
ScreenshotOne
ScreenshotOne exposes a selector option, with controls including scroll_into_view, wait_for_selector, and error_on_selector_not_found. Its documentation says that if several elements match, it selects the first visible element in the DOM. Do not assume another provider uses that same rule. Review its selector options and guide to screenshotting an area for the controls and coordinate alternative.

Use a clip rectangle for fixed coordinates
A selector targets an element’s rendered bounds; a clip rectangle targets coordinates. Choose clipping when the requirement is a fixed area—for example, a region with a known position and size—not when the target’s layout may shift between page loads.
Coordinates can become incorrect when the viewport, responsive layout, fonts, or page content changes. ScreenshotOne recommends its selector option over precise coordinates when a reliable selector is available. Browserless also documents a clip option under options.clip. Check whether the coordinates are interpreted relative to the viewport or another reference frame in the API you use.

Account for visibility, scrolling, and multiple matches
- Delayed content: Wait for the specific selector or for the page condition that makes the content available. ScreenshotOne documents
wait_for_selector; Browserless says its selector capture waits for the element. - Off-screen elements: Confirm whether the API scrolls the target into view. ScreenshotOne documents
scroll_into_view. Puppeteer’s element screenshot behavior also attempts to scroll a hidden element into view by default. - Hidden elements: A node can exist in the DOM without being visible. Check whether the provider captures hidden content, waits for visibility, or reports an error; do not treat selector presence alone as proof that the result will show the intended element.
- Multiple matches: Narrow the selector or use provider-specific matching controls. ScreenshotOne documents that it selects the first visible match in DOM order; verify behavior rather than assuming this is universal.
- Elements larger than the viewport: Check whether the provider captures beyond the viewport and which selector-capture algorithm it uses. ScreenshotOne documents
capture_beyond_viewportand selector algorithm choices; behavior and defaults are provider-specific.
Capture an element in your own browser automation
If you want to manage the browser yourself, Puppeteer and Playwright can capture a selected element without a hosted screenshot API. This puts browser setup, execution, and maintenance in your application or deployment environment.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
const element = await page.waitForSelector('#target', { visible: true });
if (!element) throw new Error('Target element was not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace #target with a selector that identifies the intended element and set the URL to the page you need. Puppeteer documents that ElementHandle.screenshot() attempts to scroll a hidden element into view by default. See the official Puppeteer Screenshots guide.
Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot tool accepts a selector or element reference as its target. The documentation notes that fullPage cannot be combined with target in that tool. Consult the Playwright Screenshots guide for the applicable tool syntax and constraints.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a selected element through its screenshot API. Add a selector to the request; the API also supports many other screenshot parameters. The cURL example saves a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com --data-urlencode selector="#target" -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect element captures
- The request fails because the selector is missing: Check the selector against the page’s actual DOM and confirm the page has reached the state where that element exists. Use a selector wait or the provider’s missing-selector error control where available.
- The screenshot contains the wrong element: Check for duplicate matches. Make the selector more specific rather than relying on an undocumented first-match rule.
- The target is cut off or absent: Determine whether the element is outside the viewport, hidden, or larger than the viewport. Configure scrolling or beyond-viewport behavior if the provider offers it.
- The crop is displaced: If you used coordinates, re-check the viewport and layout at capture time. Prefer a stable selector when the area corresponds to a DOM element.
- The page is still changing: Wait for a meaningful selector or application state instead of assuming that navigation completion guarantees the desired content has finished rendering.
Choose hosted capture or self-managed automation
The documentation establishes how these tools target elements, but it does not establish a universal fastest, cheapest, or most reliable option. Decide based on the workload you need to run.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture an element that is below the fold?
Yes, if the API or automation library scrolls it into view or supports capture beyond the viewport. Confirm the relevant setting and behavior for your chosen tool.
Can a full-page screenshot and a targeted element screenshot be combined?
It depends on the tool. Playwright’s screenshot documentation says its screenshot tool cannot combine `fullPage` with `target`.
