Yes. A Windows mini PC can keep a YouTube study stream running through OBS Studio: prepare a scene, connect OBS to a stream created in YouTube Studio, and leave the mini PC powered and connected. For a reliable 24/7 setup, you also need stable upload capacity, cooling and power that can handle continuous operation, and a tested plan for Windows restarts and internet outages. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, so one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay.
Plan the stream before setting up the mini PC
Choose what viewers will see and hear before configuring OBS. A study stream might use a static image, a simple animation, a captured desktop, or a camera-led study-with-me scene. The more movement and sources a scene contains, the more work the encoder may have to do.
- Decide on resolution and frame rate based on the upload connection you can sustain, not its best speed-test result.
- Choose visual and audio material you own or have explicit permission to stream. Music or a looping video is not automatically copyright-safe; check current YouTube policies and the terms attached to each asset.
- Decide whether you need chat moderation and whether the live broadcast must also become a replay.
- Allow for ongoing power, internet, storage, cooling and noise. A mini PC must stay on for a local OBS broadcast to continue.
No particular mini PC model or minimum processor specification has been established for this workload. OBS notes that compatibility alone does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully.
Connect YouTube Live to OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS Studio, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream URL and key, or use the available account-connection workflow if you prefer.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, public posts or recordings. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Start with a test broadcast and confirm that the picture, audio and stream health look right in YouTube Studio before relying on the setup.
First-time YouTube Live enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Build and test the study scene in OBS
OBS’s Quick Start Guide walks new users through its Auto-Configuration Wizard, adding sources, checking audio meters and testing output. For a simple study stream, add the intended image, video, display capture or other visual source, then add the audio source you have rights to use. If you use a video or animation loop, verify in your installed OBS version that it repeats and behaves as intended after a restart.
- Run the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point; then inspect its output choices rather than assuming they are right for a continuous stream.
- Build the scene and check that every source is visible, correctly cropped and in the intended order.
- Play representative audio and watch the OBS audio meters. Listen for clipping, silence or unexpected desktop sounds.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test for several minutes with the same sources and motion planned for the real stream. OBS explicitly encourages testing before a first stream.
- Watch encoder load, dropped frames, temperatures and YouTube stream health. A still background with modest motion is generally a less demanding scene than complex motion, but the exact load depends on the machine and settings.
OBS’s official guides: Quick Start Guide and System Requirements. OBS lists Windows 10/11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements, while cautioning that meeting requirements does not guarantee streaming capability.

Choose video settings your upload can sustain
Run a speed test, then leave headroom for normal network variation and other household traffic. YouTube’s figures below are recommended H.264 video bitrates for ingestion, not a guarantee that a connection reporting that upload speed will hold steady around the clock.
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate | YouTube listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, retrieved in 2026; they are not measured results for your ISP or mini PC. If upload varies, choose a lower resolution or frame rate and test it under realistic conditions. YouTube’s full guidance, including additional settings, is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Higher frame rate is not automatically better for a mostly static study scene.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs.
- Codec: YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1. The bitrate table above is specifically for H.264.
Choose a mini PC for sustained operation, not a spec-sheet claim
OBS says its requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a baseline, then run an extended test with the actual scene. No mini PC has been benchmarked here, so there is no verified model recommendation or universal minimum CPU or RAM figure.

OBS has a Windows launch parameter, --startstreaming, that can start streaming when OBS opens. Its Launch Parameters guide explains how to add parameters to a shortcut. This can automate one step; it does not guarantee unattended recovery.

- Configure the Windows and OBS startup behavior you intend to use, including how the PC signs in and how OBS opens after a reboot.
- Test a planned reboot and confirm OBS launches, the intended scene and media sources are ready, and the correct YouTube event resumes.
- Test a brief internet interruption. Check whether OBS reconnects and whether YouTube continues the intended event or requires intervention.
- If you need recovery after power loss, verify how your specific mini PC and power setup behave when electricity returns. Device-specific BIOS options differ.
- Repeat tests after meaningful changes to Windows, OBS, the network or the scene. Do not disable security updates as a blanket reliability measure.
Network readiness, login behavior, Windows updates, power restoration and media-source restart behavior can all affect recovery. A launch parameter alone does not address those failure points.
Plan replays and local recordings separately
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule does not mean a single continuous 24-hour stream will be saved as one complete replay. If a replay matters, consider ending and restarting before the 12-hour threshold, then verify YouTube’s current behavior for your channel and event setup.
OBS can record while streaming. If an ungraceful stop is possible, OBS recommends MKV because an interruption need not corrupt the entire recording. Recording requires storage, and settings other than “Same as stream” use extra computer resources. See the Standard Recording Output Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Stream setup or key | Confirm the selected YouTube event, stream URL and key match. Check whether first-time Live enablement is still pending. |
| Stream health reports instability or frames drop | Upload stability, bitrate or encoder load | Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate, reduce competing network traffic, and retest with the actual scene. Do not treat a one-time speed test as proof of sustained upload. |
| Video appears but audio is silent or wrong | OBS source routing or levels | Check the intended audio source and OBS meters, then listen to a test broadcast before leaving it unattended. |
| OBS opens after a reboot but the stream does not resume | Launch behavior, login, network readiness or reconnect handling | Test the full reboot path, verify --startstreaming is applied to the shortcut you actually launch, and confirm the network and YouTube event are ready. |
| The broadcast stops during a power interruption | Power continuity and device recovery | Test restoration behavior on the specific PC and network gear. A UPS may bridge brief loss; size it for the combined load and desired runtime rather than assuming a generic capacity. |
| A long stream has no single complete replay | YouTube archive limit | Use shorter sessions under the current archive threshold or make a local recording, and verify the resulting files and platform behavior. |
