Puppeteer Screenshots on Alpine Linux: Install Chromium Dependencies

A practical Alpine Linux setup guide for Puppeteer: install Chromium dependencies, configure its executable path, choose compatible versions, and diagnose common failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To take Puppeteer screenshots on Alpine Linux, install Chromium and its required system libraries and fonts, then point Puppeteer at the Chromium executable actually present in your image. Alpine needs extra care: Puppeteer warns that Chrome does not support Alpine out of the box, so the package list and browser path below are starting points, not a universally validated recipe. Test the exact image, Alpine release, architecture, Chromium build, and Puppeteer version you plan to deploy.

Install Chromium and its Alpine dependencies

Puppeteer’s Alpine example installs Chromium, supporting libraries and fonts, plus Node.js and Yarn. For a Docker image, the documented example is:

FROM alpine
RUN apk add --no-cache
  chromium nss freetype harfbuzz ca-certificates ttf-freefont nodejs yarn
ENV PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH=/usr/bin/chromium-browser

This package list is an example from Puppeteer’s guidance, not a guarantee for every Alpine release or Chromium package. Confirm the package names and dependencies for your chosen image. The executable path in the example is /usr/bin/chromium-browser; check that it exists in your image before relying on it.

Choose a compatible Chromium and Puppeteer pairing

Puppeteer’s standard system-requirements page lists Debian/Ubuntu and openSUSE/Fedora for Chrome for Testing; Alpine is not among those listed platforms. Its Alpine guidance instead recommends checking the available Alpine Chromium package and selecting a corresponding Puppeteer-supported browser version. Do not assume that any current Alpine Chromium build will work with any Puppeteer release.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The current Puppeteer documentation identifies v25.12.0 and requires Node 22.12 or newer. Its supported-browser table maps Puppeteer v25.12.0 to Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57. That mapping is for Chrome for Testing; it does not establish compatibility with every separately packaged Alpine Chromium build. Check the current mapping and the Chromium package version when pinning a deployment.

There is also a documented Alpine-specific timeout warning: Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page reports an issue with Chromium on Alpine 3.20 and says downgrading to Alpine 3.19 fixes it. Treat this as a version-specific report, not a rule for every current Alpine and Chromium combination; validate the versions you intend to run.

Point Puppeteer at the installed browser

If the Alpine package supplies Chromium rather than Puppeteer’s downloaded Chrome for Testing binary, explicitly select the installed executable. Puppeteer’s example sets PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH. You can instead provide executablePath in the launch options:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
  executablePath: '/usr/bin/chromium-browser'
});

Use the path verified inside your image; package layouts can differ. An environment variable or launch option cannot compensate for a missing binary, missing shared library, or incompatible browser version.

Capture a screenshot after launch

Once the browser launches, navigate to the target page and call Page.screenshot(). For example, in a Node.js application that has Puppeteer installed:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
    executablePath: process.env.PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH || '/usr/bin/chromium-browser'
  });
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The screenshot call writes page.png in the process’s working directory. If Chromium cannot launch, troubleshoot the browser and image first; screenshot options only take effect after launch and navigation succeed.

Build and validate the image you will deploy

  1. Choose the Alpine release and target architecture, then install Chromium and the required packages for that build.
  2. Check the installed binary path in the built image and configure PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH or executablePath to match it.
  3. Choose a Puppeteer release deliberately against the browser version; do not reuse an old example’s version pairing without checking current compatibility information.
  4. Run the screenshot code inside the exact image and container configuration intended for production. A successful build alone does not prove Chromium can launch or render there.
  5. If Linux reports a launch failure, inspect the Chromium binary’s shared-library dependencies with ldd /path/to/chromium | grep not, replacing the path with the executable present in your image.

Container image and sandbox choices

If Alpine is not a requirement, Puppeteer’s official Docker image is another route: it bundles Chrome for Testing and its required dependencies. Its documented sandbox invocation grants SYS_ADMIN, and Puppeteer recommends using an init process such as --init or a custom entrypoint to manage child processes. This image is an alternative container base, not an Alpine-based solution.

Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide shows --no-sandbox in an example but strongly discourages running without a sandbox and recommends sandboxes. Do not use that flag as a routine fix for absent Alpine libraries; address the actual dependency, executable-path, compatibility, or container-permission problem.

Troubleshoot common launch and screenshot failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Puppeteer cannot find or launch Chromium The configured executable path does not match the package layout, or the browser package is absent. Check the binary inside the built image; set PUPPETEER_EXECUTABLE_PATH or executablePath to that exact path.
Launch fails with missing shared libraries The selected Chromium build needs system libraries not present in the image. Inspect dependencies using ldd /path/to/chromium | grep not, then check the packages required by that Alpine and Chromium build.
Browser starts but exits, times out, or behaves unexpectedly The browser and Puppeteer versions may not be compatible, or the failure may be specific to the Alpine release. Verify the browser/Puppeteer pairing and test the target image. Puppeteer documents a timeout issue for Chromium on Alpine 3.20, with Alpine 3.19 reported as a fix for that issue.
Screenshot is missing or navigation fails Execution may not reach Page.screenshot() because launch or navigation failed. Confirm launch succeeds, the page navigation completes, and the process can write to the requested output path.
Dependency installation helper does not support the image Puppeteer’s browser-install installDeps option is documented for Chrome on Debian or Ubuntu, not as an Alpine dependency installer. Install and validate Alpine packages for the chosen browser build instead.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without maintaining Chromium inside an Alpine image, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step independently switchable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
