A practical implementation can try the declared image first and capture a screenshot only when your design calls for one or the metadata is unusable. Neither option is established as universally better, cheaper, or more reliable at directory scale.
What each method gives you
Open Graph image: fetch publisher-declared metadata
The Open Graph Protocol defines og:image as the URL of an image representing a webpage object. It is metadata chosen and published by the site—not an instruction to render the live page. A page that declares og:image is providing an image reference that your directory can retrieve and evaluate.
The protocol also supports optional image metadata: a secure URL, MIME type, width, height, and alternative text. Its documentation says a page specifying og:image should also specify og:image:alt. See the Open Graph Protocol specification.
Screenshot API: render the page and capture it
A screenshot API loads and renders the target webpage, then returns an image of the rendered page. OpenGraph.io documents controls such as viewport presets, full-page capture, CSS-selector capture, output formats, and other rendering options. Its documentation also identifies link-preview thumbnail generation as a use case; that is the vendor’s stated use case, not independent comparative validation. How to choose for a directory

Prefer metadata when it meets the card’s needs
A declared image avoids making a rendered capture simply to obtain a visual, and it represents the publisher’s selected image. That does not guarantee that every target declares one, that the image loads, or that its crop and dimensions suit your card. Check the actual targets rather than assuming consistent coverage.
Use a screenshot when the rendered page is the point
Choose capture when you need a view of the rendered page, a specific viewport, a full-page image, or a particular page element. A screenshot is not automatically a better thumbnail: it can include layout, overlays, or content that does not fit your design, so test its appearance against your own directory requirements.

A practical fallback design
- Read the target page’s metadata. Look for
og:image; where supplied, also inspect its associated type, dimensions, secure URL, and alternative text. - Validate the image for your card. Check that the URL is retrievable and that the returned image format, dimensions, and loading behavior work with your presentation. The protocol does not guarantee image availability or quality across sites.
- Choose the rendering path deliberately. Use the declared image if it meets your directory’s visual requirements. If a rendered view or capture controls are needed, use a screenshot API instead or as a fallback.
- Set your own retention policy. Keep a copy or cache only as required by your directory and the service’s terms. For OpenGraph.io specifically, its documentation says returned screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours and recommends downloading or caching images intended for longer use.
- Test representative targets. Include pages with missing or unsuitable metadata, different layouts, and the loading behavior your directory encounters. The available sources do not establish a universal success rate, cost, latency, or reliability advantage.
Screenshot API example and service-specific considerations
OpenGraph.io documents this screenshot endpoint: GET https://opengraph.io/api/1.1/screenshot/{encoded_url}?app_id=YOUR_APP_ID. Its documentation describes JPEG, PNG, and WebP output; quality; full-page capture; viewport presets; CSS selector and excluded-selector options; cookie-banner blocking; dark mode; cache permission; proxy option; capture delay; and navigation timeout. Its example response includes a screenshot URL, dimensions, and request information. Confirm the current endpoint details and response behavior in the vendor documentation before building against them.
For a directory, check whether returned images need to be downloaded before use, how capture settings fit your card, and what happens when a page does not render as expected. The cited documentation’s 24-hour URL expiration matters if your directory stores the returned URL rather than the image itself. No independent pricing, performance, legal-permission, or scale comparison is established here; evaluate those requirements for your own targets and provider.
