PDFShift vs DocRaptor for HTML-to-PDF Conversion

PDFShift and DocRaptor both convert HTML or URLs to PDFs. Compare their documented rendering options, limits, pricing models, and workflows using your own documents.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PDFShift and DocRaptor both turn HTML or a URL into PDFs through hosted APIs, but the available documentation does not establish a universal winner for rendering quality, speed, reliability, security, or cost. DocRaptor documents its use of the Prince PDF engine and configurable JavaScript options; PDFShift advertises CSS and JavaScript support and a free monthly allowance. Choose by testing representative documents and comparing output, script behavior, limits, data terms, and the price for your actual volume.

How PDFShift and DocRaptor differ

Area PDFShift DocRaptor
Rendering approach Describes CSS and JavaScript support; the reviewed developer material does not identify a rendering engine. PDFShift developer page Documents the Prince PDF engine, selectable pipeline versions, and optional JavaScript engines. DocRaptor API reference
Input Developer material describes conversion from raw HTML or URLs. PDFShift developer page Accepts HTML content or a URL. DocRaptor API reference
Asynchronous work Describes webhooks and parallel/asynchronous conversions; check current plan availability. PDFShift developer page Documents asynchronous generation and callbacks for jobs. DocRaptor API overview
Published limits relevant to this comparison The listed free plan has a 15 MB maximum file size and a 30-second timeout. Its credits are based on generated output size. PDFShift pricing Documentation lists a one-minute default synchronous limit, ten-minute asynchronous limit, 30 simultaneous requests, and 100 MB hosted-document output limit. DocRaptor API limits
Price evidence The current pricing page advertises up to 50 free credits per month; each credit covers up to 5 MB of generated output. PDFShift pricing A current like-for-like paid price was not established here; check its current plans and estimate against your workload.

These are vendor-documented capabilities and limits, not results from a controlled head-to-head benchmark. A service’s support for a feature does not guarantee identical output on every document.

Which one should you choose?

Choose DocRaptor when the rendering pipeline matters

DocRaptor names Prince as its PDF engine and allows pipeline selection. Its API reference identifies pipeline 10.1 as the default at the time of the reviewed documentation and maps pipeline versions to Prince and JavaScript-engine versions. Defaults may change, so verify the current reference when implementing. The API accepts either HTML or a URL, and offers configurable JavaScript handling. DocRaptor API reference

Consider PDFShift when its credit model and workflow fit

PDFShift advertises raw HTML and URL input, CSS and JavaScript support, webhooks, parallel/asynchronous conversions, and integrations. It also describes capabilities including CSS/JavaScript injection, headers and footers, encryption, watermarking, and AWS S3 delivery. Confirm which features are available on the plan you intend to use. PDFShift developer page PDFShift pricing

Decide with your own documents

Run both services on the same representative set: a simple invoice, a long document with page breaks, a page with web fonts or external images, and a page whose content depends on JavaScript. Compare fidelity, missing assets, processing and failure behavior, throughput at expected concurrency, and the full cost for your expected output sizes and volume. The reviewed evidence does not establish that either service is faster, more reliable, more secure, or cheaper overall.

Limits, cost, and operational trade-offs

PDFShift credit accounting

PDFShift’s pricing page advertises up to 50 free credits per month. The vendor says one credit covers up to 5 MB of generated data; its FAQ gives a 14 MB PDF as an example that consumes three credits. The listed free plan also specifies a 15 MB maximum file size and 30-second timeout. These are vendor-published figures accessed in 2026 and can change; verify the current pricing page and FAQ before budgeting. The FAQ also gives a $24/month example for a Boost plan with 2,500 credits; treat it as a time-sensitive vendor example, not a guaranteed current quote. PDFShift FAQ

DocRaptor generation and hosted-output limits

DocRaptor’s API limits documentation lists a one-minute default synchronous generation time, a ten-minute asynchronous generation time, a limit of 30 simultaneous requests, and a 100 MB output limit for hosted documents. It says it does not set hard limits on page count, complexity, input size, or output size except for hosted documents. These are API limits, not a promise that every complex document completes within those times. DocRaptor API limits

Compare the cost of the same workload

Estimate monthly conversions and generated output size, then include retries, asynchronous jobs, and any delivery or storage needs in the estimate. PDFShift publishes its credit allowance and pricing; the reviewed material does not establish a current comparable DocRaptor price. Do not infer which is cheaper without checking both current plan pages and pricing the same workload.

JavaScript, assets, and rendering fidelity

DocRaptor says both of its JavaScript engines are disabled by default and warns that enabling both can evaluate code twice. Enable only the engine your document requires, and test script-dependent pages for duplicate side effects as well as missing or late-rendered content. Consult the current API reference for engine names and pipeline mappings.

PDFShift describes CSS and JavaScript support, but the reviewed material does not provide a controlled comparison of how it handles particular scripts, fonts, or complex layouts against DocRaptor. Test real examples rather than assuming browser-like behavior from feature descriptions. For either service, verify that external assets are reachable from the provider’s rendering environment and that delayed content is ready before conversion; the available evidence does not establish identical asset-loading or script-timing behavior.

API workflow and integration

DocRaptor request and response pattern

DocRaptor documents POST requests to its document endpoint using API-key authentication. An ordinary successful request returns PDF bytes. Asynchronous requests return a status identifier, while hosted-document requests return a download URL. Check the current API overview and API reference for exact endpoint, request fields, authentication format, and response handling; these details can be version-sensitive.

PDFShift integration pattern

PDFShift’s developer page describes conversion from HTML or a URL, webhooks, parallel/asynchronous responses, and integrations. It also advertises advanced headers and footers and output options such as encryption, watermarking, and AWS S3 delivery. Treat these as vendor-described capabilities and confirm current parameters and plan eligibility in its developer documentation and pricing page.

Privacy and sensitive documents

PDFShift’s developer page says it does not store documents unless requested and describes its technology as HIPAA compliant. Those are PDFShift’s statements, not independent audit findings. Before sending regulated or confidential material to either provider, review current contracts, security documentation, retention settings, and compliance terms directly with the vendor. The reviewed sources do not establish equivalent security terms for DocRaptor. PDFShift developer page

How to run a fair conversion test

  1. Build a representative test set. Include the layouts, fonts, images, charts, page breaks, and scripts found in your application, not just a plain text page.
  2. Send equivalent inputs. Use the same HTML or URL, assets, document settings, and readiness conditions on each service. Record whether the service receives inline content or fetches a URL.
  3. Compare visual and functional output. Check page count, clipping, line wrapping, fonts, image loading, headers and footers, links, and script-generated content.
  4. Exercise operational paths. Test synchronous and asynchronous conversion where available, realistic concurrency, callback or webhook handling, and failure/retry behavior.
  5. Price the measured workload. Use actual output sizes and monthly volume with each provider’s current plan information, including free-tier constraints and any required add-ons.
  6. Review data terms before launch. Confirm retention, access, processing location, and contractual assurances appropriate to your data category.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems

PDF is missing a font, image, or stylesheet

Check whether the source asset is publicly reachable from the conversion service, whether the URL requires authentication, and whether the document references a relative path that resolves differently in the service’s environment. Inline or otherwise make critical assets available in the manner supported by the selected API, then repeat the same test in both providers.

JavaScript-generated content is absent

For DocRaptor, JavaScript engines are disabled by default; configure the appropriate option and avoid enabling both engines unless you intend to test their interaction. For PDFShift, consult its current developer documentation for the supported JavaScript behavior and settings. In either case, verify that the content is produced before the renderer captures the page.

Conversion times out

For PDFShift’s listed free plan, the published timeout is 30 seconds. For DocRaptor, the documented default synchronous limit is one minute and the asynchronous limit is ten minutes. Reduce unnecessary assets or script work, and use the provider’s supported asynchronous workflow for jobs that exceed the synchronous path. Recheck current plan and API limits before relying on these values.

Large output is rejected or cannot be hosted

PDFShift lists a 15 MB maximum file size on its free plan. DocRaptor lists a 100 MB limit for hosted-document output; that limit is specific to hosted documents. Confirm whether your request uses hosted delivery and compare the output against the applicable current limit before changing the document or delivery flow.

Document renders differently between runs or providers

Keep the input HTML, assets, pipeline/version, JavaScript settings, and conversion options fixed while isolating the difference. Check whether content depends on external resources or time-sensitive scripts. DocRaptor’s pipeline versions map to engine versions, so record the selected version and verify the current mapping in its reference.

ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for screenshots, not PDF conversion

If your need is a clean website screenshot rather than a generated PDF, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for PDFShift or DocRaptor’s HTML-to-PDF workflow. Its capture options include PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF, but use the PDF option only when a website capture is the job.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one GET request with the page URL to receive a screenshot or PDF. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
