PDFShift is a hosted HTML- and URL-to-PDF rendering API that can turn an invoice page or HTML document into a PDF. It can be a fit when your application already creates invoice content and needs a PDF-rendering step; it is not, on the evidence available, an accounting or invoicing system that calculates tax, collects payment, or manages invoice lifecycles.
This review covers the vendor-documented workflow and the practical checks to make before using it for customer invoices. No hands-on invoice test or independent benchmark was performed, so verify rendering, speed, and reliability with representative documents before relying on it in production.
What PDFShift does—and what it does not establish
PDFShift accepts raw HTML or a URL and converts the input to PDF. Its FAQ specifically names invoice generation as a use case: “You can use PDFShift for invoice generation for your customers, export images from a graphics editor, and much more.” That makes it a document renderer, not evidence of a complete billing workflow. Your application still needs to supply the invoice data and handle accounting rules, tax calculation, numbering, payment collection, and lifecycle management.
PDFShift’s product page lists 86+ million conversions, 56,000+ developers, a 1.5-second average conversion time, and 99.99% uptime. These are vendor-published figures; the retrieved page text does not state a publication year or methodology, and they were not independently verified. How an invoice-rendering request works
The documented API endpoint is https://api.pdfshift.io/v3/convert/pdf. PDFShift’s example uses an HTTP POST, an X-API-Key authentication header, and a source field containing the HTML or URL to convert. Keep the API key on a server you control rather than exposing it in browser-side code.
For invoice generation, the usual flow is to build the invoice content in your application, send the HTML or its URL for conversion, then deliver the resulting PDF through your own application. PDFShift’s automation page describes delivery by direct download, URL, cloud storage, or webhook and lists options such as margins, headers, and footers. Choose raw HTML or URL input
Use raw HTML for private or generated invoices
Sending HTML directly avoids requiring PDFShift to fetch the page over the network, which is useful when the invoice is generated dynamically or is not publicly accessible. PDFShift says this can improve speed; that is vendor guidance, not a result independently tested for invoice workloads. The vendor recommends inlining styles and scripts to reduce additional network requests. This can also make the input more self-contained, but verify that all fonts and images needed by the template are available in the conversion context.
Use a URL when the invoice page is fetchable
URL conversion lets the service fetch a rendered page instead of receiving the page markup in the request. That may suit an existing invoice route, but do not assume a private application URL will work without arranging access. Test authentication, page readiness, and any assets loaded from other hosts. The official documentation describes both input modes; evaluate them with the same invoice data and template before choosing one.

Invoice rendering checks before production
A successful conversion response does not by itself establish that an invoice is correct or legible. Test representative documents using your own data and templates, including:
- Your production fonts, logos, and other image assets, including what happens when an asset is missing or slow to load.
- Long item tables that continue across pages, repeated table headings if needed, and totals that must remain associated with the correct invoice.
- Page breaks, margins, headers, footers, and the intended paper size and orientation.
- Taxes, discounts, currencies, locales, long customer names, and unusual address or line-item lengths.
- Large documents and output sizes, since PDFShift’s FAQ says credit use is tied to the generated file size.
Compare the resulting PDF with an expected rendering and validate the invoice’s underlying amounts in your application. The rendering API should not be treated as the authority for financial calculations.

Authentication, credits, and pricing
PDFShift’s authenticated examples use the X-API-Key header. A help article says the service changed from Basic Auth to this header on 2025-05-06 and warns that missing authentication can result in a watermark. If a PDF unexpectedly contains a watermark, first check that the key is present, valid, and sent in the required header format. PDFShift authentication help
PDFShift’s FAQ describes 50 free credits per month. It says credits are counted in increments of one per up to 5 MB of generated output. The same FAQ gives a Boost example of $24 per month for 2,500 credits, with $0.03 per conversion in overage. These are vendor-stated plan figures and may change; check the live pricing and account terms before estimating costs. In particular, estimate using your own document sizes and expected invoice volume rather than assuming every conversion consumes the same amount. PDFShift FAQ

Privacy and invoice data
Invoices can contain customer names, addresses, purchase details, and other sensitive information. PDFShift states that it does not store requests or generated documents, but explains that use of its filename parameter stores results on Amazon S3; it also says users can instead deliver documents to their own S3 storage. Treat these as vendor statements and review the current privacy policy, DPA, configuration, and contract for your specific use. PDFShift FAQ
PDFShift’s terms identify SASU PDFShift as organized under French law and state that user information may be processed or stored in the United States and other countries outside the EU. Whether that is acceptable depends on your jurisdiction, customer commitments, and applicable requirements. Reliability, performance, and cost evaluation
No independent speed, uptime, or invoice-fidelity benchmark is available here. PDFShift’s published average conversion and uptime figures are vendor claims without methodology stated in the retrieved page text. For a production decision, run a trial against the conditions that matter to your workload: typical and unusually long invoices, peak request volume, asset availability, timeouts, authentication failures, and the effect of output size on credits.
- Record whether each test produces a valid PDF, not merely an HTTP success response.
- Measure your own end-to-end latency, including HTML generation, asset fetching, conversion, and delivery.
- Define what your application should do when conversion fails: retry only where appropriate, surface an actionable error, and avoid sending a partial or incorrect invoice.
- Model monthly spend from observed output sizes and current plan terms, including the possibility of overage.
When PDFShift may fit
PDFShift is worth evaluating if your product already owns invoice creation and needs a hosted component to render supplied HTML or a reachable page into PDF. Raw HTML is especially relevant when invoice pages are private or assembled dynamically. It is not enough to establish suitability for regulated or sensitive workloads: verify document fidelity and review data handling and contractual terms for your own requirements.
