For a clear, flattering stream, start with one controllable key light in front of you, near or just above eye level, angled slightly downward. Set its color to work with the light already in your room, then judge the result in your camera preview. Add another light only if you can identify what the first one is not solving.
Start with one key light
The key light is the main source illuminating your face. You do not need a three-light setup to begin: try an adjustable lamp or available daylight before buying anything, and see what changes in the camera image.
Place it deliberately
Put the light in front of you, close to or just above eye level, and angle it down toward your face. Elgato’s setup guide for its Key Light recommends positioning that product just above eye line and angling it downward by approximately 30 degrees. Treat that as a useful starting point, not a universal rule for every light, desk, or camera. Elgato’s Key Light setup guide is version 01, dated December 15, 2020.
Move the light close enough to illuminate your face evenly, but not so close or bright that it feels uncomfortable or the camera image clips bright areas. There is no single distance or output setting that works for every room and framing, so adjust while watching the preview.

Match the room
Choose a consistent color temperature that looks natural alongside your other light sources. If a window and overhead lamps give noticeably different colors, switch off or control one source where practical, or adjust the key light to blend with the light you keep. Mixed lighting can make one side of your image look warm and another cool.
Adjust while watching the camera
Check exposure and white balance in your camera or streaming software. If your face looks too dim, too bright, orange, blue, or unevenly shadowed, change one thing at a time—such as the light’s position, brightness, or color temperature—then check the preview again. Auto white balance behaves differently across cameras; a consistent light source can make it easier to maintain a stable look.

Understand brightness, CRI, and color temperature
These specifications describe different properties. None, by itself, guarantees a flattering on-camera image.

These are Elgato’s guidelines, not universal requirements. Elgato’s CRI explainer also distinguishes color rendering from brightness and color temperature. |

Choose a starting color temperature, not a magic number
Lower Kelvin values look warmer; higher values look cooler or bluer. Elgato’s guide offers these starting ranges: 2700–3200 K for warm indoor light, 4000–5000 K for neutral white, around 5600 K for daylight-style light, and 6500 K and above for cooler, bluer light. Room colors, walls, the camera, and the background affect the appearance, so those ranges are references rather than a prescription. Elgato’s color-temperature guide was updated July 30, 2026.

The light’s color temperature describes the light it emits. White balance is the camera’s interpretation of that light, used to make whites and other colors appear natural. If the light’s tone and camera white balance do not work well together, skin and neutral surfaces can look unnaturally warm or cool.
When to add another light
Add fill only when shadows need softening
If the key light leaves one side of your face too dark for the look you want, try reducing the contrast with a second, less prominent light. Elgato’s Key Light guide suggests placing two lights on either side at 45-degree angles; that is product-specific setup advice rather than a requirement. A reflector or light bounced off a nearby pale surface may also soften shadows, though the result depends on the room and materials.

Use background light for a specific effect
A background light can create separation or a deliberate color treatment. Add it after you are satisfied with the light on your face; it is an optional creative choice, not a basic requirement.

- Usable brightness at your intended distance: consider whether it can illuminate your face evenly in the position available to you, rather than choosing by a lumen figure alone.
- Softness and diffusion: larger or diffused sources generally spread light more softly. The visible result depends on placement and the rest of the setup.
- Adjustable color temperature: useful when you need to match daylight, room lamps, or a preferred look.
- Color rendering: check whether the manufacturer gives a CRI figure, while treating it as one factor rather than a guarantee.
- Mounting and footprint: check for a desk clamp, monitor mount, stand, or other mounting option that fits your desk and does not obstruct your framing.
- Controls and setup: confirm how brightness and color are adjusted, and whether the control method suits your devices and network.
For one documented example—not a universal recommendation—Elgato’s Key Light product page lists adjustable output up to 2,800 lumens, adjustable color temperature of 2,900–7,000 K, CRI above 92%, desk-clamp mounting, and desktop and mobile app control. Troubleshoot the image before changing the whole setup
- Your face is too bright or washed out: reduce the light’s brightness or move it farther away, then check that bright areas retain detail in the preview.
- Your face is too dark: increase brightness or move the key light closer, making small changes until the face is evenly lit without discomfort.
- Your skin looks orange or yellow: check whether a warm room light is competing with the key. Turn off or control the competing source if practical, or adjust the key light and camera white balance.
- Your skin looks blue: check for cool daylight or a high color-temperature setting, and adjust the light or camera white balance while viewing the preview.
- One side of your face is too shadowed: change the key light’s position first. If the contrast remains too strong, try a subtle fill light or reflected light.
- The light looks right to you but wrong on stream: make adjustments based on the camera preview, not only what you see in the room; camera exposure and white balance affect the captured image.
