To fix a live-stream error, first identify what failed: OBS dropped frames or disconnected, YouTube reported an encoder-health issue, viewers experienced buffering, or the encoder hit an RTMPS or DASH protocol error. Those symptoms point to different parts of the workflow. Check the OBS log and the platform’s exact health message before changing settings; lowering bitrate will not fix a codec warning or an incorrectly configured secure endpoint.
Identify which part of the stream is failing
“Why is my stream dropping frames?” and “How do I fix a live stream that keeps disconnecting?” are easier to answer once you separate the symptom from its likely cause. Note what the operator sees and what viewers report, then match the evidence to the relevant layer.
| Symptom | Start with | What it points toward |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnect | OBS dropped-frame counter, connection status and log | The route from the encoder to the ingest server, including bitrate, network conditions and connection software. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. |
| YouTube shows a stream-health warning | The warning’s issue type and explanation | An encoder setting such as codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval or audio configuration. |
| OBS appears healthy, but viewers report buffering | Compare viewer playback reports with encoder and platform health | A playback problem distinct from the encoder-to-ingest connection. Healthy ingest alone does not establish that every viewer’s playback is healthy. |
| RTMPS SSL error, invalid certificate or timeout | Endpoint URL, port, TLS and SNI configuration | A secure-connection setup problem rather than a routine bitrate issue. |
| DASH segment or manifest PUT fails | HTTP response and encoder retry handling | A protocol-specific delivery or request error; OBS bitrate controls are not the remedy. |
Collect the OBS log and the platform’s health message before changing settings. Make one change at a time so a retest can show whether that specific change helped.
Fix dropped frames and disconnects in OBS
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, treats dropped frames primarily as a connection-to-ingest problem. It recommends checking the selected server, bitrate and network conditions rather than assuming OBS itself is at fault.

Check whether the upload path can sustain your bitrate
- Measure the connection under realistic conditions, including other people or devices using the same network. Compare stable upload capacity—not just a brief peak—with the stream’s configured video bitrate and any platform limit.
- As a starting point, OBS suggests setting bitrate to 75% of total upload speed. This is a starting point, not a guarantee: shared traffic and fluctuations can make a lower rate necessary.
- If the path cannot sustain the current rate, lower video bitrate and test again. This can improve stability, but it reduces image quality.
- OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion to help avoid dropped frames. OBS cautions that it does not solve the underlying connection problem, and reduced bitrate means reduced quality.
Test the ingest server and network path
- Try another available ingest server and compare the result.
- If possible, test another streaming service to help determine whether the issue is specific to the destination.
- Prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi for a stream that must remain stable. A wired connection is a troubleshooting step, not proof that every remaining fault is in the router or cable.
- Check the modem or router connection, Ethernet cables, network card, switches and extenders. Restarting the modem or router is a reasonable first check; replace equipment only when testing suggests it is faulty.
Check software, drivers and Windows network settings
- Temporarily test whether a VPN, security software or network-optimization utility is interfering. Restore security protection afterward; if it is implicated, configure an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Update network drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report can help and that provide additional logging detail. These are diagnostic possibilities, not guaranteed fixes.
- Leave OBS’s Bind to IP setting at Default initially. IPv4-only can be tried as a diagnostic; if it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
If the problem persists after these checks, give your ISP the times, symptoms, OBS log and tests already performed. Congestion or route changes may be outside your control; consult the ISP before concluding that hardware needs replacement.
Translate YouTube health warnings into encoder changes
When YouTube reports a stream-health problem, use the warning’s issue type and explanation to choose a fix. Google’s LiveStream configuration-issues reference covers audio and video codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, missing or multiple tracks, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. Fix the setting named by the warning instead of applying an unrelated network remedy.

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, specifies RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies by resolution, frame rate and codec; these examples are YouTube guidance, not universal targets for other platforms or every encoder mode:
| YouTube example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the complete settings matrix. Do not treat a published encoder target as evidence that your connection can hold that rate: OBS’s upload-based starting point and YouTube’s per-format guidance answer different questions.

Resolve RTMPS connection errors separately
For an encoder or integration that connects to YouTube over RTMPS, verify the full endpoint construction rather than changing video bitrate first. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated September 14, 2026, specifies an rtmps URL with a valid ingest server and application path, port 443, TLS, and SNI authentication using the server hostname.
- An invalid certificate can indicate that the encoder reached an RTMP endpoint instead of the expected RTMPS endpoint.
- An SSL error can result from the wrong port or incorrect TLS/SNI handling.
- A timeout after connection can indicate that cleartext RTMP was used where RTMPS was expected.
Check the exact URL, port and hostname passed to the encoder, along with its TLS and SNI settings. Do not assume that changing OBS’s network bitrate settings will repair a protocol mismatch.

Handle YouTube DASH delivery errors by HTTP response
This branch is for encoder developers implementing YouTube DASH ingestion, not a general retry recipe for OBS or other protocols. Google’s DASH delivery guide describes separate, potentially concurrent PUT requests for segments and the MPD. Failed PUTs call for randomized binary exponential backoff.
- Read the response code and handle it according to its meaning; for example, a 400 response indicates a malformed request, while 409 indicates a conflict.
- Some conflicts may require retransmitting the MPD and initialization segment. Follow the guide’s response-specific handling instead of retrying every error identically.
- Do not apply DASH retry logic to RTMPS or treat it as a universal ingestion fix.
Test before going live and monitor the right signals
YouTube recommends testing with audio and video motion similar to the real broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. A static test image or silent encoder may not expose the same configuration or performance issue as the actual programme.

- Run a preflight with representative audio, motion, resolution and frame rate.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- During the event, record the time of any warning or viewer complaint so you can compare the symptom with the encoder log and platform status.
- If viewers report buffering while ingest looks healthy, keep the problem classified as playback-side until playback evidence identifies a cause. Do not claim the encoder connection is responsible without that evidence.
YouTube transcodes live video into multiple outputs for different devices and network conditions, so healthy ingest and an individual viewer’s playback are related but not identical observations. A green or healthy encoder status is useful evidence, not a guarantee of every viewer’s experience.
