HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is a protocol for delivering live and on-demand audio or video over HTTP. A player uses playlists to find media segments, downloads those segments in order, and can switch between available quality versions as network conditions change. HLS works with ordinary web servers and content delivery networks, but a usable stream still depends on correct packaging, delivery, and player support.
How HLS streaming works
HLS separates the stream into media segments and uses playlists to tell a player where those segments are. The encoder or packager creates the files; an HTTP server or CDN delivers them; the player retrieves and presents them. For live playback, the player periodically reloads the media playlist to discover new segments. For video on demand (VOD), the playlist can describe a fixed asset and signal that it has ended.
- A production or packaging system creates media segments and one or more playlists.
- The player requests the entry playlist and selects an available rendition.
- It fetches that rendition’s media playlist and downloads its segments in sequence.
- If suitable alternatives are available, the player may switch renditions as bandwidth or other playback conditions change.
- For a live stream, it reloads the media playlist for new segments. For protected content, it may also retrieve keys and decrypt media as required.
Apple describes HLS as designed for reliability and dynamic adaptation to available wired and wireless connection speeds. Adaptation is a capability, not a guarantee of seamless switching: the alternatives must be packaged appropriately, delivered, and supported by the client.
Master, multivariant, and media playlists
Multivariant playlist (also called a master playlist)
This is typically the player’s entry point. It lists alternate media playlists, often for different bandwidth or quality variants, and can identify other tracks. Apple documentation calls it a “Multivariant Playlist”; RFC 8216 uses “Master Playlist.”

Media playlist
A media playlist describes the sequence of segments for a selected stream. A live playlist changes as the broadcast advances; a VOD playlist describes a fixed presentation. The player follows this playlist to locate the media it needs to fetch.
Media segment
A segment is a consecutive piece of the stream. Apple’s authoring guidance covers MPEG-2 transport stream and fragmented MP4 media formats. The format used must work with the intended player and the rest of the packaging and delivery setup.

How adaptive bitrate playback works
A multivariant playlist can offer multiple renditions. The player chooses among them and may move to another when network conditions change, helping it balance picture quality against the bandwidth available. This does not mean HLS automatically improves a single rendition, nor that every device will switch identically. The packager needs to provide appropriate alternatives, and the client must support the formats and tracks involved.
Live HLS and HLS for on-demand video
HLS can deliver both live broadcasts and prerecorded content. The main difference in the workflow is what the media playlist represents: a live playlist is updated as new segments become available, while a VOD playlist describes a completed asset and can indicate its end. Packaging and playlist details should suit the intended presentation; Apple’s authoring requirements distinguish playlist types and call for accurate segment-duration signaling and alignment across audio and video playlists.

What Low-Latency HLS adds
Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) adds mechanisms intended to reduce the delay between production and playback while retaining HTTP-based delivery. Apple documents partial segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports.
- Partial segments can be published before the full parent segment is complete.
- Delta updates can omit older playlist material the client already has.
- Blocking reloads let a playlist request wait for an update.
- Preload hints help a player request an upcoming resource.
- Rendition reports help clients switch across renditions.
These features require compatible behavior from production tools and the server or content-delivery path; low latency is not achieved by adding a single playlist tag. Apple recommends a one-second part target in its guidance, with the chosen target tied to expected client-to-server round-trip time. A player may fall back to regular-latency HLS if a server lacks the required low-latency configuration support. Neither the protocol nor that target establishes a universal end-to-end delay.

Encryption and protected HLS content
HLS playlists can reference encryption keys. Depending on the stream, a client may need authorization, key retrieval, and decryption before it can play media. A playlist existing at a URL does not by itself mean content is adequately protected. Secure delivery also involves key handling, authorization, transport security, and client support. For protected delivery to Apple devices, Apple’s authoring specification describes FairPlay Streaming requirements and related encryption constraints.

- Playlist and segment correctness: durations should be signaled accurately, and related audio and video playlists should be aligned as required by the target platform.
- Suitable presentation type: choose playlist behavior appropriate to live, event, or VOD use.
- Consistent renditions and tracks: verify that bit-rate alternatives, languages, audio, captions, and video variants are packaged coherently.
- Client compatibility: confirm support for the codecs, media formats, encryption methods, and HLS features your target players need.
- Reliable, secure delivery: serve playlists and segments reliably; protect keys and apply authentication and transport security where the use case requires them.
- Validation: validate generated playlists and segments against current platform requirements. Apple provides HLS tools and guidance, and its platform authoring material evolves.
