Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteContribution moves a live source feed to a production facility or platform ingest point; delivery carries a prepared stream from an origin or content-delivery network to viewers. They describe different jobs in a video workflow, not two mutually exclusive families of protocols: a system can accept one protocol and deliver another.
Where contribution and delivery fit
A typical live workflow has a source, such as a camera and encoder, sending video to an ingest point. That source-to-production or source-to-platform leg is contribution. The receiving system may process, package, or transcode the feed, then send streams out toward viewer devices. That origin-to-viewer leg is delivery.
The division is practical, not absolute. Protocols can appear at more than one stage, and a platform may accept one format at ingest while distributing the stream in another. For example, YouTube Live documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as supported ingest protocols; that list applies to YouTube and should not be assumed to describe another platform’s ingest options. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide its service-specific guidance.
Common protocols at each stage
| Workflow stage | Common examples | What the choice needs to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Contribution | RTMP, RTP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi | Latency goals, network reliability, interoperability, platform support, and operating requirements. |
| Delivery | HLS and MPEG-DASH over HTTP | Adaptive playback, distribution infrastructure, player and device support, and the required latency. |
These examples are not an exhaustive list or a rule that a protocol belongs to only one stage. The Streaming Video Technology Alliance describes a range of contribution options and their differing workflow considerations in its overview of contribution protocols for live streaming.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Contribution protocols: getting the source to ingest
RTMP and RTP
RTMP and RTP are among the established contribution choices. Whether either fits depends on the encoder, receiver, network, and destination’s supported ingest formats; the protocol name alone does not establish end-to-end latency or reliability.
SRT and RIST
SRT is designed for low-latency transport of live audio and video and is used at contribution and distribution endpoints, according to Haivision’s SRT description. “Low latency” describes a design goal, not a guaranteed viewer experience: encoding, buffering, network routing, packaging, and playback all contribute to total glass-to-glass delay.

RIST is another contribution option identified by the SVTA. Selection between SRT, RIST, and other approaches should be made against the actual endpoints, network conditions, and interoperability requirements rather than a universal ranking.
Zixi and systems that span stages
Zixi documents network-aware error correction for transport and outputs that include HLS and MPEG-DASH. It illustrates how a vendor platform can handle both transport and delivery-format stages; this is the vendor’s product description, not an independent comparative performance result. See Zixi’s platform information.

Delivery protocols: getting the stream to viewers
HLS
HLS is an HTTP-based adaptive streaming approach commonly used for delivery. It can be configured for different latency needs; it is not accurate to treat HLS as exclusively on-demand or inherently high-latency in every deployment.
MPEG-DASH
MPEG-DASH is also HTTP-based and supports both live and on-demand streaming over existing Internet infrastructure. MPEG’s standards overview says: “It supports both on-demand and live streaming and has specific provisions for the MPEG-4 file format and MPEG-2 Transport Streams, but can be used with any media format.” Read MPEG’s MPEG-DASH overview.

HLS and DASH are delivery approaches, but service-specific implementations can also use them at ingest. YouTube’s documented support for HLS and DASH ingest is one such case, not a general promise that every platform accepts them.

- Total latency: measure or specify glass-to-glass latency, from capture through encoding, transport, processing, packaging, buffering, and playback—not just protocol transport time.
- Network resilience: determine how the workflow behaves with packet loss, jitter, and unmanaged or variable networks, and what recovery mechanisms are available.
- Compatibility: confirm support across the encoder, receiver, platform ingest, packaging system, and viewer playback devices.
- Scale and distribution: consider whether the delivery path and CDN can serve the expected audience and device mix.
- Security: check transport protection, access controls, and the destination’s security requirements.
- Operations and cost: account for configuration, monitoring, conversion between formats, support, and infrastructure—not merely the protocol’s technical properties.
There are no controlled, comparable benchmarks here that establish one protocol as best across all of these dimensions. Validate the exact implementation with its real endpoints and network conditions.
What the 2024 protocol survey does—and does not—show
In Haivision’s Broadcast Transformation Report 2024, 58% of respondents reported using SRT for low-latency video transport; the report also cited RTMP at 56% and UDP at 45% in its discussion of contribution protocols. These are survey results from that report, not a census of the streaming industry or a current 2026 market-share estimate. See the 2024 report.
Keep the protocol labels in perspective
- Contribution means source-to-production or source-to-ingest transport; delivery means origin-to-viewer distribution.
- RTMP, RTP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi are examples of contribution choices; HLS and DASH are common HTTP-based delivery approaches.
- Workflows can mix protocols, convert between them, or use a delivery format at ingest where the platform supports it.
- Choose for the actual latency, resilience, compatibility, scale, security, and operational needs; protocol names alone do not settle those questions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your practical goal is keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than designing a live contribution-and-delivery chain, StreamNeo is a separate, narrower option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is not a camera-live production tool and it streams to YouTube only.
Each slot has one flat price regardless of uploaded quality, streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps without re-encoding, includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The same product is included on every billing length:
- Daily $0.99 per day
- Weekly $2.99 per week
- Monthly $9.99 per month
- 6 months $49.99 for 6 months
- Yearly $89.99 a year
Billing can be cancelled any time; UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
