How to Configure Linux Mint Workspaces [Quick Guide 2024]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux Mint Workspaces are a simple way to keep different activities separated—your browser in one workspace, your coding tools in another, and a media player elsewhere. Once configured, they can make window management feel noticeably calmer and faster.

This quick guide focuses on the Cinnamon desktop, which is what most Linux Mint users run. You’ll learn where the workspace controls live, how to set the number and switching behavior, how to set keyboard shortcuts, and what to do when things don’t act the way you expect.

What Linux Mint Workspaces are (and which Mint editions use them)

“Workspaces” in Cinnamon are virtual desktops: each workspace is a separate grid of windows. Switching workspaces hides windows from the other workspace without closing them.

In Linux Mint 21.x, workspaces are primarily a Cinnamon feature. If you’re using a different Mint flavor (like MATE or Xfce), the UI labels and settings tools differ, and this guide won’t match 1:1.

Prerequisites: confirm your desktop and workspace settings

Before changing anything, confirm you’re actually on Cinnamon and know which version you’re running. This matters because menu labels and defaults can shift slightly across Mint releases.

  1. Open Menu → System Settings.
  2. Look for About or check System Information to find your Mint version (for example, Mint 21.3) and Cinnamon version.
  3. If you see Cinnamon-specific settings categories, you’re in the right place to proceed.

If you don’t see the workspace-related options described below, you may be on a different desktop environment.

Configure workspaces in Cinnamon Settings

Most workspace behavior is controlled from Cinnamon’s workspace settings (commonly under System Settings). Exact menu paths can vary slightly by Mint release, but you’ll usually find the workspace controls under desktop appearance/window behavior categories.

Use the following steps as your checklist: number of workspaces, switching behavior, and workspace “wraparound.”

Set the number of workspaces

More workspaces give you finer separation. Too many can make it harder to remember where things ended up. A practical range for most people is 4–6.

  1. Open Menu → System Settings.
  2. Go to the category that controls Workspaces (often Workspaces or a Windows-related section).
  3. Find the option for Number of workspaces (sometimes shown as a spinner or slider).
  4. Set the value (for example, 6).
  5. Switch to a different workspace to verify the change took effect.

Control whether windows appear on all workspaces (switching behavior)

Depending on your Cinnamon build, there may be an option that changes how windows behave across workspaces (common examples include “sticky” windows that stay visible, or rules that influence where a window opens).

  1. In the same Workspaces settings area, look for options like sticky windows or workspace behavior.
  2. If the UI offers a toggle, decide based on how you use the desktop:
    • Prefer strict separation: keep the default that confines windows to their workspace.
    • Prefer global tools: enable sticky behavior only for windows that should follow you (like a music controller).
  3. Test by opening a new app on workspace 1, then switching to workspace 2.

Choose your workspace switching style

Cinnamon can switch workspaces with keyboard shortcuts, mouse actions, or trackpad gestures (depending on your hardware and Cinnamon configuration). You mostly control how you switch (and how visible feedback is) via shortcuts and related settings.

Adjust wraparound (when you hit the last workspace)

Wraparound determines what happens when you switch past the last workspace. Most users like wraparound because it avoids dead-ends; others prefer it off to keep direction unambiguous.

  1. Open System Settings → Workspaces (or the Cinnamon workspace settings page).
  2. Find Wrap around (or similarly named option).
  3. Toggle it on or off, then test switching forward and backward.

Keyboard shortcuts for fast workspace switching

Keyboard switching is where workspaces become truly productive. Cinnamon typically includes default shortcuts for moving between workspaces and jumping to specific workspace numbers.

Find the current shortcuts

  1. Open Menu → System Settings.
  2. Go to Keyboard.
  3. Look for a section like Shortcuts or Custom Shortcuts.
  4. Search for keywords like workspace or switch.

Set or change common workspace keys

Set keys you can remember. A common approach is using Ctrl + Alt + a number (1–6) for direct jumps, plus a separate combination for left/right movement.

  1. In Keyboard → Shortcuts, locate actions such as:
    • Switch to workspace 1..N
    • Move to next workspace
    • Move to previous workspace
  2. Click the shortcut entry and press the key combination you want (for example, Ctrl+Alt+1).
  3. Repeat for each workspace you care about (if you use 6 workspaces, set 1–6).
  4. Apply changes and test immediately.

Make shortcuts conflict-free

If you press a shortcut and nothing happens, a different app or system shortcut may be capturing the key combo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the same Keyboard shortcuts list for duplicate bindings.
  2. Temporarily disable conflicting custom shortcuts (especially ones you added in the past).
  3. If you use accessibility tools, verify they’re not overriding the combination.

Multi-monitor behavior: what to expect and how to verify it

With multiple displays, Cinnamon can behave in different ways depending on settings and how your monitors are arranged. The key question is whether each monitor has independent workspaces or whether workspaces are shared globally.

Because Cinnamon settings can differ by Mint version, verify using a quick test:

  1. Connect both monitors and ensure they’re detected.
  2. Switch to workspace 1 on monitor A.
  3. Open a window (for example, a terminal) and move it to monitor B.
  4. Switch to workspace 2.
  5. Observe whether the terminal is hidden on both monitors or stays visible on one.

If your setup doesn’t match how you want to work, revisit workspace-related options in Settings and check any “workspace across monitors” behavior if present.

Power-user workspace workflows

Once you can switch workspaces reliably, the best workflow is the one you can sustain. These patterns tend to work well for real daily use.

Organize by task (web, docs, dev, media)

Assign meanings to workspace numbers and stick to them. Example mapping: 1=Web, 2=Docs, 3=Code, 4=Communication, 5=Media, 6=Sandbox.

Even if you don’t always follow the plan, having a default prevents “workspace sprawl.”

Use applications that remember their workspace

Many applications reopen in the last workspace they were used on. If you notice an app consistently launching into the wrong workspace, it may have a saved window placement or an overridden rule—check troubleshooting below.

Pair workspaces with window rules

Cinnamon supports window rules in several ways depending on installed packages and Cinnamon configuration. If you often use specific tools (like a chat client or a specific IDE), window rules can force them onto the workspace you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use window rules when an app should always open in the same workspace.
  • Avoid window rules for apps you frequently “move around” during the day.

Troubleshooting: common issues and fixes

Workspace configuration is usually stable, but small conflicts can break switching or window placement. Here are the most common problems and what to try.

Workspaces don’t change when you press the shortcuts

  • Check for conflicts: open System Settings → Keyboard and search for the same keys.
  • Confirm you pressed the exact combination: many shortcuts require modifiers in the correct order (for example, Ctrl+Alt must both be held).
  • Try the mouse method: switch workspaces using the workspace switcher (if you have one visible) to confirm workspaces are functioning.

If shortcuts still fail, consider logging out and back in to reset any stuck keyboard input layer.

Windows keep returning to the wrong workspace

This usually comes from one of these: application memory of last position, an existing window rule, or an app that launches multiple windows and restores them differently.

  1. Identify the exact app and whether it’s a specific window type (main window vs. popover).
  2. Temporarily open the app and manually move it, then watch what happens when you restart it.
  3. If you use window rules, disable rules for that app and test again.

If the problem only happens after upgrades or after restoring from a backup, you may be carrying old window placement metadata. In that case, clearing the app’s window settings (or resetting its configuration) can help.

Workspace switching feels laggy

  • Reduce animation: in Cinnamon settings, look for visual effects and try lowering animation intensity.
  • Check system load: a high CPU or heavy disk activity can make workspace transitions stutter.
  • Test with fewer heavy apps: close large Electron apps (some messaging clients and browsers) and see if switching improves.

Missing or disabled workspace options in Settings

If the Workspaces category is missing or options are greyed out, it’s often because you’re not on the Cinnamon desktop, or you’re using a different UI environment.

  1. Verify you’re in Cinnamon by checking System Settings → About.
  2. Reopen the settings search and type workspace to locate related entries.
  3. If you’re on a different desktop (like MATE or Xfce), switch to their respective workspace documentation.

Alternatives and related tools

Workspaces solve “where should I put this window?” Tiling and window management tools solve “how should it fit?” If you want more control, you can pair workspaces with other behaviors.

Use tiling behaviors without changing workspaces

If you’re mostly happy with workspaces but want better layouts, consider tiling features (built-in window snapping or tiling utilities). That keeps the workspace idea intact while improving window arrangement.

Window grouping tools and app switchers

Some people get additional speed from enhanced app switchers or window previews. These don’t replace workspaces; they help you find the right window faster within (or across) workspaces.

FAQs

How many workspaces should I use on Linux Mint?

A good default is 4–6. If you frequently multitask with many different categories (dev, docs, comms, media), go up to 8. Keep it low enough that switching doesn’t become guesswork.

Can I set different workspace behavior per monitor?

Depending on your Cinnamon version and settings, workspaces are often shared globally across monitors. The safest approach is to test with the quick multi-monitor test: switch workspaces and see whether windows hide consistently on both displays.

Why do some apps ignore my workspace preferences?

Some apps restore windows based on prior saved window positions. Also, window rules can override behavior. If an app repeatedly lands somewhere else, disable rules for it and test after a restart.

Where do I find workspace settings on Mint?

In Cinnamon, go to Menu → System Settings and search for workspace. The settings page usually includes number of workspaces and workspace switching behavior options.

Bottom Line

Configuring Linux Mint Workspaces is mostly about three things: setting a sensible number of workspaces, making switching reliable with keyboard shortcuts, and verifying how multi-monitor behavior works on your setup. Once you lock that in, the rest is workflow design.

If something feels off—shortcuts not firing or windows landing in the wrong workspace—treat it like a configuration conflict: check keyboard bindings first, then look for window rules and app restore behavior.
