AV1 is a video codec—short for AOMedia Video 1—that compresses video for delivery. For live streaming, its main appeal is that it can deliver similar quality at a lower bitrate, or better quality at the same bitrate, than less efficient codecs. The trade-off is higher encoding complexity, and whether AV1 is a practical choice depends on your encoder, streaming software, platform, and viewers’ devices.
What is the AV1 codec?
AV1 is an open video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. A codec compresses video into a stream of data that can be transmitted over a network and decoded for playback. AV1 is a format for encoding and decoding video—not a streaming platform, resolution, or automatic quality setting. Its design goal is efficient, high-quality compression. Alliance for Open Media’s AV1 page describes its specification and purpose.
AV1 supports adaptive streaming and high-resolution video, but using it does not by itself guarantee a sharper picture, a smaller bitrate, or compatibility with every streaming setup. Those outcomes depend on the encoder, settings, content, and the platform’s ingest and delivery pipeline.
How AV1 affects live streaming
Potentially less bandwidth for similar quality
At a given visual quality, a more efficient codec may require fewer bits; at a fixed bitrate, it may preserve more detail. This can matter when a creator’s sustained upload capacity is limited. Meta’s 2025 technical overview describes AV1 as offering up to 30% better compression than VP9, while noting greater computational complexity. The Alliance for Open Media also cites a Bitmovin evaluation behind its “30% better compression” claim; the page does not state the evaluation’s year. These are comparative claims, not promises of a fixed bitrate reduction for an individual live stream. Content, encoder implementation, settings, and the comparison codec all matter. More work for the encoder
AV1’s compression efficiency comes with greater computational complexity. The encoder must produce frames in real time without falling behind; a system that cannot keep up may need different settings or hardware. Decoding capacity also matters across the delivery chain, although platform transcoding can create other playback formats for viewers. Meta notes that live use cases require real-time encoding and may require dedicated encoding hardware at scale. That is a deployment consideration, not a requirement that every individual creator buy a particular graphics card.
The whole pipeline determines compatibility
A successful AV1 broadcast requires the encoder and streaming software to output AV1 in a protocol the destination accepts. The platform must ingest it, and its delivery system must provide a suitable playback option to each viewer. A platform’s support for AV1 ingest does not mean every device, software version, or source encoder supports it. Nor does an AV1 input guarantee that each viewer receives AV1: YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers across devices and networks.

YouTube’s published AV1 live settings
YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance lists AV1 as an ingest video codec for RTMP/RTMPS. Its bitrate figures below are YouTube recommendations for those configurations, not universal AV1 requirements or benchmarks for all platforms. Check the YouTube live encoder settings page before configuring a stream, since platform guidance can change.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are settings in YouTube’s guidance for its live ingest, not codec rules that apply to every service.

HDR is a YouTube-specific exception
YouTube’s documented RTMP(S) settings say AV1 is not supported for HDR and recommend H.265 for HDR. This is a YouTube ingest limitation in that guidance; it does not mean the AV1 specification itself cannot represent HDR. If HDR is required, check the platform’s current supported codec and workflow before choosing an encoder.
How to decide whether AV1 fits your stream
- Check your platform first. Confirm that it accepts AV1 from your chosen protocol and that your streaming software can send it. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS AV1 ingest; do not assume another service has the same support.
- Compare at the same target. Compare AV1 with H.264 or H.265 using the same content, resolution, frame rate, and quality target. Codec names alone do not determine the result.
- Measure upload headroom. Compare the platform’s recommended ingest bitrate with your sustained upload capacity, allowing margin for network variation. A lower recommended bitrate is useful only if the configured stream remains stable.
- Verify real-time encoding performance. Check whether your CPU, graphics hardware, encoder, and software can sustain your intended resolution and frame rate. If considering a graphics card, confirm its specific AV1 encoding capability and compatibility with your software and destination; support varies by card and implementation.
- Account for HDR and the audience path. For YouTube RTMP(S) HDR, use the codec YouTube recommends rather than AV1. Consider both your ingest codec and the platform’s transcoding and viewer-device support.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from choosing an AV1 encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming or a guarantee of AV1 ingest. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
