To share your screen during a live stream, add a screen, window, or application capture source to a scene in streaming software such as OBS, check the preview, and send that scene through your platform’s encoder workflow. Choose the narrowest capture that shows what viewers need: sharing a whole display can expose notifications and other private material.
Before you start: check that your channel can go live
If you plan to stream to YouTube, check its current eligibility requirements before setting up OBS. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. These are YouTube requirements, not universal rules for every streaming platform. See YouTube’s live-streaming guide for the current details.
Choose what viewers will see
OBS offers different capture scopes. A full-display source shares a monitor; a window or application source can restrict the broadcast to a particular program. Pick based on what the stream needs, how much of your desktop you want exposed, and which capture methods your operating system supports.
| Capture choice | What it shows | Best fit | Privacy consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display Capture | The selected monitor | Demonstrations that move between apps or need the full desktop | Anything visible on that monitor may appear, including notifications and unrelated windows |
| Window or application capture | A selected window or application, subject to the installed OS and OBS capture method | A presentation or walkthrough that stays in one program | Narrows what is shared compared with the whole monitor, but still inspect the preview |
Capture-source availability varies by operating system and version. OBS says its legacy Display Capture is deprecated on macOS 13 or newer and points users to macOS Screen Capture. Its capture-source guide also lists XSHM and PipeWire options for Linux. Consult the OBS capture-source guide for your installed version rather than assuming every source is available on every computer.

Set up screen sharing in OBS
- Prepare a scene. In OBS, select the scene you intend to broadcast, or create one for the screen share. A scene lets you arrange the sources that make up the outgoing picture.
- Add a capture source. In the scene’s Sources panel, add a display-capture source for a whole monitor, or choose an available window or application-capture source to limit the shared area. Source names and available methods can differ by OS and OBS version; use the current OBS capture-source guide if the option you need is missing.
- Select the intended screen or window. When prompted, choose the monitor, window, or application you want to show. Check that it is the correct one before continuing.
- Check framing in the OBS preview. Confirm the important content is visible and not cut off. If you are using a display source, remember it captures the monitor; overlapping windows may remain visible. Adjust the source’s placement or size in the scene if needed.
- Do a privacy check. Close unrelated tabs and apps, hide account details and personal messages, and silence or disable desktop notifications. The W3C Screen Capture specification warns: “The user agent is strongly recommended to steer users away from sharing a monitor, as this poses risks to user privacy.” A window capture can reduce exposure, but it is not a substitute for checking what the preview shows.
- Connect OBS to the platform’s encoder workflow. Use the streaming setup provided by your platform, then start streaming from OBS and confirm the platform reports a live or healthy preview before presenting. YouTube lists encoder streaming as one of its ways to go live; follow its current instructions for your channel.
Choose the stream’s orientation before going live
Consider whether the audience should see a horizontal or vertical presentation, and compose the screen share accordingly. YouTube also describes a dual-stream option. Its live-streaming guidance says vertical format cannot be added after a stream starts, so decide on the format before you begin if it matters to your viewers. Check YouTube’s current setup instructions for the available format choices.
Bitrate, resolution, and frame rate
There is no single bitrate, resolution, or frame-rate value that fits every screen-sharing stream. The right output depends on the platform’s current recommendations, your connection’s upload capacity, your computer, and whether the material is mostly slides and text or fast-moving video. The sources cited here do not establish specific encoder settings across platforms, so do not treat a generic number as a guaranteed setting. Consult the platform’s current encoder guidance and test the result in its preview before presenting.

Copyright and other people’s content
Sharing your screen does not exempt material shown or played in the stream from copyright rules. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content; a stream may be interrupted or terminated if such content remains. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content can still trigger action if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Use content you have the right to stream, and resolve any required allowlisting with the rights owner rather than assuming a license alone guarantees uninterrupted streaming. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Common screen-sharing problems
- The preview is black or the capture source is unavailable: Check that you selected a capture method supported by your OS and OBS version. On macOS 13 or newer, OBS marks legacy Display Capture as deprecated and directs users to macOS Screen Capture. Linux capture-source options include XSHM and PipeWire.
- The wrong monitor or window appears: Reopen the source’s selection and choose the intended display or application. Verify the result in the preview before going live.
- Viewers can see private information: Stop or pause the presentation while you close unrelated windows, hide sensitive information, and silence notifications. Recheck the preview before resuming.
- The shared content is cropped or hard to read: Inspect the scene preview, resize or reposition the source, and confirm that the important content fits the chosen orientation.
- You cannot go live on YouTube: Check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the age requirement in YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
- The stream is interrupted while third-party material is visible or audible: Remove the material or confirm that you have the necessary rights and any Content ID allowlisting required by the rights owner. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption.
