OBS Studio is the best first choice for most tech reviewers and tutorial creators who want free, open-source software and control over how their screen, camera, and audio are arranged. Streamlabs Desktop is a relevant alternative if you prefer an integrated setup flow and built-in creator features. Neither one guarantees smooth recording or streaming on your computer: performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and available hardware.

Which software should you choose?

Software Best fit What the available product information establishes
OBS Studio Creators who want free, open-source recording and live-streaming software with flexible scene and source control. OBS Project describes it as free and open source. Its overview covers scenes, sources, audio devices, recording, and streaming controls.
Streamlabs Desktop Creators who value a guided setup flow and integrated creator features. Streamlabs’ setup guidance covers capture sources, encoder selection, and audio devices; its getting-started material describes both recording and live broadcasting.

This is a workflow comparison, not a performance ranking: the available product information does not establish a controlled head-to-head test. Your operating system, computer, recording or broadcast goals, and preferred degree of setup control should guide the choice.

What matters in software for tech reviews and tutorials?

Screen and scene control

A typical review may need a clean screen demonstration, a camera view, or a layout that shows both at once. Streaming software lets you combine sources such as screen content, a camera, and audio into a production workflow. Before recording, decide which layouts the episode needs and build a scene for each one. Check that the capture source shows the intended display or application, especially when switching between a product interface and other windows.

Recording, live broadcasting, or both

If you mainly publish edited tutorials, recording is the essential workflow; live broadcasting may be useful for a live walkthrough or audience Q&A. OBS Studio supports both recording and live streaming, and Streamlabs Desktop supports recording and live broadcasting. In either application, test the specific workflow you plan to use rather than assuming that a successful recording proves your live setup is ready.

Audio and narration

Clear narration matters in a software walkthrough: viewers need to hear what you are explaining while following the screen. Select the intended microphone or Mic/Aux input and check other audio devices, such as system audio, if the tutorial needs them. Make a short test recording and listen back for a microphone that is missing, too quiet, distorted, or competing with captured computer audio.

A microphone for streaming or a USB microphone for tutorials can be a sensible accessory for voice-led reviews, but the right choice depends on your recording environment and connection needs. The cited setup guidance supports configuring microphone input; it does not establish a best microphone model.

Encoding and the computer doing the work

Choose an encoder and output settings your computer can handle, then test a representative scene. OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system-requirements guidance says CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. It also notes that 60-fps streaming can be much more taxing than 30 fps. For a screen tutorial, use a frame rate appropriate to the motion in the demonstration and your hardware rather than choosing a higher setting by default.

Set up and test a review or tutorial

  1. Choose the application and workflow. Start with OBS Studio if free, open-source software and flexible control are priorities. Consider Streamlabs Desktop if its guided setup and built-in creator features suit you better. Decide whether you will record, broadcast live, or do both.
  2. Plan the scenes. Create the layouts your episode requires, such as a screen demonstration and a camera-plus-screen view. Add the relevant capture sources and confirm that each shows the intended content.
  3. Set audio devices. Select the microphone or Mic/Aux input you intend to narrate with. Include other audio sources only if the episode needs them, then verify the levels and routing in a test.
  4. Choose an encoder and output settings. Set the encoder, resolution, and frame rate for your intended recording or destination platform and what your computer can sustain. Requirements can vary by platform, so check the destination’s current guidance before a live broadcast.
  5. Make and review a short test recording. Watch the screen capture and listen to the narration. Check for the wrong display or application, missing or unbalanced audio, and performance problems. Adjust the scene or settings and test again before a scheduled live review.
  6. For a live broadcast, verify upload capacity and platform rules. Streamlabs support gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a general upload-speed guideline for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms; it is vendor guidance, not a universal minimum or independent benchmark. Requirements vary by platform, so confirm the current requirements for your destination. Also check that you have the rights to use any music, video, or other material in the broadcast.

Common problems and what to check

  • The recording shows the wrong screen or window: review the selected capture source and scene, then make another short test to confirm the intended display or application appears.
  • Narration is missing or hard to hear: check the selected microphone or Mic/Aux device and audio routing. Listen to a test recording rather than relying only on the meters.
  • The computer struggles during capture: CPU demand can vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Test with the actual scene, and consider reducing the frame rate or other output demands; 60 fps can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps.
  • A live stream cannot maintain the intended output: check the destination platform’s current ingest requirements and your available upload capacity. The 3.6 Mbps guideline applies to Streamlabs’ general 720p-at-30-fps guidance for most platforms, not every platform or setup.
  • Music or clips create a rights concern: use material you have permission to include and check the platform’s current copyright rules before going live or publishing a recording.

Or let it run in the cloud

OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop are for capturing and producing your own screen, camera, and audio workflow. If instead you want an uploaded, prerecorded video to keep looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not capture a camera or replace desktop software for recording a tech review.
