How to Multistream: Rules, Bandwidth, and Tools

Multistream by sending separate outputs from your computer or one feed through a cloud relay. Learn how to plan bandwidth, test destinations, and meet Twitch’s simulcasting rules.

To multistream, send your live program to more than one platform either as separate outputs from your computer or as one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it. Before going live, check each platform’s account requirements and rules, add up the bitrates if you send outputs locally, and test the complete setup under realistic conditions. If Twitch is one of your destinations, its simulcasting rules require you to preserve the Twitch experience and avoid directing viewers away from Twitch.

Choose how to send your stream

The key choice is where your stream is duplicated: on your computer or in a cloud relay. YouTube calls simultaneous broadcasts across platforms “simulstreaming” and describes both approaches in its guide to streaming across platforms.

Approach Best fit Trade-offs
Local encoder with separate outputs You want granular control and have enough computer capacity and upload headroom. Each additional output can increase upload demand and encoding load. Destination settings may differ, and quality or transcoding options depend on the platform.
Cloud multistream relay You want a simpler setup, have an older or less capable computer, or plan to send to more than two channels. You depend on an outside service, its supported destinations, plan limits, and destination-specific settings. Costs and limits vary by provider.

A local setup gives you more direct control, but your computer has to handle the outgoing feeds. With a relay, you send one feed to the service, which distributes it to destinations. YouTube describes this as a way to simplify distribution and reduce local load. Restream likewise says its service replicates one incoming stream, but that is the provider’s description of its own service, not a universal guarantee for every relay. See Restream’s bandwidth guidance.

Check each destination before configuring the encoder

Multistreaming does not remove the setup or eligibility requirements of individual platforms. Confirm that each account can go live, that you have the correct ingest details, and that your planned stream settings are accepted by each destination.

  • YouTube: The channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take at least 24 hours after the first request. Check the current requirements in its simulstreaming help page.
  • Other destinations: Requirements vary. Accounts generally need to be active and in good standing; a destination may require a stream key and RTMP server URL. Get these from that destination’s own live-stream setup.
  • Agreements: Review any partner, event, or promotional agreement for exclusivity or other terms that may apply in addition to public platform rules.

Keep stream keys private. Treat them like passwords: enter each key only in the encoder or relay you intend to use, and replace a key if it is exposed.

Calculate upload bandwidth for local outputs

When your computer sends a separate feed to each destination, add the target bitrates together. Use YouTube’s recommendation of roughly 1.5 to 2 times that combined target as a stability planning check. It is guidance for simulstreaming, not a universal setting or a substitute for each platform’s ingest requirements.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  1. Write down the planned bitrate for every locally sent output.
  2. Add those bitrates to get the combined target.
  3. Multiply the combined target by 1.5 and by 2 to estimate the upload headroom YouTube recommends.
  4. Test the actual setup while sending audio and video with movement similar to your real broadcast; do not rely only on an idle speed test.
  5. During the live test, watch each destination’s stream-health indicators and adjust settings or reduce outputs if you see instability.

YouTube’s example uses a 6 Mbps stream and a 4 Mbps stream, for a 10 Mbps combined target; for that example it recommends 15–20 Mbps upload speed for stability. Those numbers are YouTube’s example and recommendation, not fixed requirements for every creator or platform. On a shared connection, other household or office traffic can compete for upload capacity.

A cloud relay changes where distribution happens: your computer sends one incoming feed rather than one locally transmitted output per destination. Restream’s own guidance says its relay does not require extra creator upload bandwidth per destination; it recommends at least 10 Mbps and 25 Mbps or higher, especially for Full HD. Those are Restream vendor recommendations, not neutral standards for all relays. See Restream’s explanation.

Set up a local multistream from an encoder

The exact controls differ by encoder and destination, so use each platform’s current instructions for its ingest server, key, and accepted stream settings. The general workflow is:

  1. Prepare each destination. Enable live streaming where required, create or schedule the broadcast, and obtain the server URL and stream key for each platform.
  2. Choose the local-output method. Configure your encoder or compatible output workflow to send a separate feed to each destination. Confirm that it supports the number of outputs you need; the research here does not establish specific current OBS plugin names or menus.
  3. Set each feed to an accepted configuration. Use the bitrate and other ingest settings each platform supports. Do not assume one destination’s limits or quality options apply to another. Platform transcoding—the creation of alternate feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates—is platform-dependent; see the OBS explanation of transcoding.
  4. Run a private or otherwise low-risk test where available. Check audio, picture, and stream health at every destination, and verify that your computer and connection remain stable with all outputs active.
  5. Go live and monitor each destination. Keep an eye on the encoder and platform health indicators. If one output fails, identify whether the problem is that destination’s key or ingest, local encoding capacity, or the connection before changing several settings at once.

The available evidence does not specify a single bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or OBS menu path that is correct for every multistream. Use each platform’s current settings guidance and test the full configuration instead of copying a single universal preset.

Use a cloud relay when you do not want your machine to fan out outputs

A relay receives one feed and forwards it to multiple destinations. For example, Restream publishes an OBS connection guide. Follow the chosen relay’s current connection steps, then connect each destination through the relay as its instructions require. Check supported platforms, output settings, and plan limits before relying on it for an event.

With a relay, your computer still needs to encode and upload the incoming feed reliably; the relay takes on the distribution to destinations. This reduces the creator-side fan-out burden, but it does not eliminate the need to test the source feed or check each destination’s status.

Follow Twitch’s simulcasting rules if Twitch is included

Twitch’s Terms of Service section 11 permits simultaneous streaming to another live platform only when its listed conditions are met. Twitch requires the Twitch experience to be at least as good as the experience elsewhere, including your engagement with the Twitch community; it says not to direct Twitch viewers away to the concurrent stream; and it prohibits third-party services that combine activity from other platforms on the Twitch stream during the simulcast. Read the current Twitch Terms of Service.

In practice, keep engaging with Twitch viewers on Twitch and do not use a merged cross-platform chat or similar third-party feature on the Twitch stream. Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ distinguishes identifying that you are also present elsewhere from actively encouraging Twitch viewers to leave for a concurrent broadcast. Your private partner, event, or promotional agreement may impose additional obligations, so check it separately.

Common multistream problems and what to check

  • Dropped frames or unstable feeds on several destinations: If sending locally, compare the combined target bitrate with available upload capacity and the 1.5–2× planning range above. Retest under realistic network load and inspect the live health indicators.
  • One destination does not start: Check that destination’s live eligibility, server URL, stream key, and accepted settings. A working output elsewhere does not prove that this destination’s ingest details are correct.
  • Local encoding struggles as outputs are added: More outputs can add encoding load. Consider reducing the number of locally encoded outputs or using a relay, while checking the service’s capabilities and limits.
  • Relay output is missing or differs from expectations: Check whether the destination is supported, connected, and configured as required by the relay; verify that the incoming feed is healthy before troubleshooting the destination copy.
  • Different platforms show different quality options: Transcoding availability depends on the platform. Do not assume every destination will provide the same alternate resolutions or frame rates.
  • Viewers are being directed away from Twitch: Change the call to action and cross-platform chat setup to meet Twitch’s simulcasting rules, and check any applicable private agreement.

Copyright and content checks still apply

Multistreaming does not grant rights to the music, video, images, or other material in a broadcast. Before going live, confirm that you have permission to use the content on every destination and that your planned use complies with each platform’s policies. A stream being accepted by one service does not establish that it is cleared for another.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a different use case from multistream relays: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel, rather than distributing a live camera or encoder feed to multiple platforms. To start, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs from StreamNeo’s cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Find out more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
