For most laptop streamers trying to keep CPU use down, start with OBS Studio and select a supported hardware encoder—Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, or AMD AMF—instead of x264. That shifts video encoding work off the CPU, but it cannot guarantee smooth streaming: the game, capture sources, graphics load, heat, drivers, and network can still cause problems.

Which streaming software is best for a low-CPU laptop?

OBS Studio is the best starting point when you want direct control over scenes and encoder settings. Its hardware-encoding guidance recommends a compatible hardware encoder for performance because encoding work moves from the CPU to a specialized component. This is a configuration recommendation, not proof that OBS always uses less CPU than another app. OBS also warns that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee a machine can handle a particular streaming or recording workload. See the OBS hardware encoding guide and system requirements.

Streamlabs Desktop is a reasonable alternative if you prefer its onboarding-oriented workflow. Its minimum requirements list Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM, but those minimums do not promise smooth performance for your particular game, scene, or laptop. Streamlabs says demanding games, animated overlays, plugins, and other running programs may need more resources. Its requirements page was last updated April 8, 2026; verify current support before installing. See Streamlabs Desktop System Requirements.

Option When it fits What to consider
OBS Studio You want configurable scenes and direct access to encoder settings. Choose a hardware encoder your laptop supports; compatibility alone does not establish that the full workload will run smoothly.
Streamlabs Desktop You prefer an onboarding-oriented workflow. Its published minimums are not a workload guarantee; overlays, plugins, games, and other apps affect resource needs.

There is no controlled laptop benchmark in the cited official material that establishes which application consumes less CPU. Choose based on workflow and the encoder available on your laptop, then test the actual scenes and content you plan to stream.

Why does the encoder matter more than the app label?

Video encoding is the work of compressing your video for a live stream. OBS offers x264 software encoding, which uses the CPU, and hardware encoding options such as Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, and AMD AMF when supported by the laptop and its drivers. OBS says hardware encoders generally move the workload to a specialized component that can encode more efficiently. Intel’s streaming guide suggests trying Quick Sync when operating near minimum hardware capability: How to Start Live Streaming.

Hardware encoding is not cost-free and does not solve every bottleneck. A laptop may still struggle with game rendering, scene composition, capture sources, heat, drivers, or network conditions. If the hardware encoder is missing from the app, check that the laptop’s graphics hardware supports it and that its drivers are current; do not select an encoder the system does not offer.

How to configure OBS for a lower-CPU stream

  1. Install the current build. Get OBS from the official OBS download page, which provides distinct Intel and Apple Silicon installers. The page’s version information changes, so check the current release and choose the installer for your laptop rather than relying on an older version number.
  2. Check the available encoders. Open Settings → Output and inspect the encoder options for streaming. Choose the supported hardware encoder—Quick Sync, NVENC, or AMF—if reducing CPU work is the priority. Use x264 only when a hardware encoder is unavailable or you have a reason to prefer software encoding and enough CPU headroom.
  3. Reduce scene and application load. Close unnecessary heavy applications and simplify animated overlays and browser sources. These sources add work beyond encoding, and reducing them is general tuning advice rather than a guaranteed performance fix.
  4. Scale back output if the laptop still struggles. Lower the output resolution or frame rate and test again. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped; there is no universal setting that suits every laptop, game, and connection.
  5. Test the intended workload. Make a short recording or test stream with the game, scene, overlays, and capture sources you expect to use. Watch for dropped frames and encoder warnings. A clean test with a light scene is not proof that a demanding game session will also be smooth.

How to choose between Quick Sync and x264

If your laptop offers Quick Sync and CPU headroom is the main concern, try Quick Sync first. It uses a supported hardware encoding path rather than asking x264 to encode on the CPU. Compare the result using the same stream settings and actual scene; hardware encoding can shift the bottleneck but does not guarantee better overall performance in every setup.

Choose x264 only if you need it for your configuration or want to test its output and your CPU can sustain the workload. If the CPU is already busy running a game or other applications, software encoding can make the stream or game less responsive. Test before relying on either option for a live session.

Common low-CPU streaming problems and fixes

  • The hardware encoder is not listed: The laptop may not support that encoder, or the relevant driver may be missing or outdated. Check the installed graphics hardware and driver, then reopen OBS and review the encoder list.
  • CPU use remains high after switching encoders: The game, browser sources, overlays, capture, or other running programs may be the load. Simplify the scene, close competing applications, and retest.
  • The stream or game still stutters: CPU encoding is only one possible bottleneck. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, test with the intended game load, and distinguish encoder warnings from dropped frames before changing settings again.
  • Performance degrades during a longer session: Heat or other laptop limits may be involved. Retest under realistic session conditions and reduce graphics or stream workload if needed; an encoder choice alone cannot rule out thermal limits.
  • A minimum-spec laptop does not perform well: Minimum requirements describe compatibility, not guaranteed performance for every combination of game, scene, and apps. Streamlabs makes this distinction in its requirements guidance, and OBS explicitly says the same about compatible systems.
