Video Transcoding Explained: What It Is and When You Need It for Streaming

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media to change compatibility, properties, or quality renditions. Learn when streaming needs it—and when streamcopy is enough.

Video transcoding decodes an encoded audio or video stream and encodes it again, usually to change its format or properties. You need it when the source will not work at the destination, must be transformed, or needs multiple quality versions for delivery. If the source already fits the destination and needs no processing, copying the existing streams—often called streamcopy—avoids unnecessary compute and quality loss.

What is video transcoding?

Transcoding is a conversion step: software decodes an encoded media stream, then encodes the decoded media into a new stream. The result may use a different codec, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or other settings. FFmpeg’s transcoding documentation describes the process and common reasons for it.

It is not simply copying a file or forwarding its already-encoded packets. In FFmpeg, streamcopy copies encoded streams from input to output without decoding and re-encoding them. That can be the right choice when the existing streams already meet the destination’s requirements and no transformation is needed.

When do you need to transcode for streaming?

  • Codec compatibility: The destination or target playback devices cannot decode the source’s video or audio codec, so you need an accepted format.
  • A different size or frame rate: The workflow requires a resolution or frame-rate change. Resizing and deinterlacing are examples of video filters that require decoded media.
  • Audio or visual processing: You need to apply filters, process audio, or combine the media with an overlay before delivery.
  • Adaptive quality: You need several renditions—versions at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates—so a player can offer or select a version suited to the viewer’s device and connection.

OBS explains transcoding in streaming as turning a source feed into multiple feeds, often with different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. The OBS Project article describing this was published on 2021-06-09. Its explanation of renditions remains useful, but any platform eligibility details in that dated article should not be treated as current policy.

When is streamcopy enough?

Use streamcopy when the encoded audio and video already match the target workflow and you do not need filters or other changes. Because there is no re-encode, streamcopy avoids the additional encoding work and the quality loss that can accompany a lossy re-encode. FFmpeg puts the trade-off plainly: “Since encoding tends to be computationally expensive and in most cases degrades the stream quality (i.e. is lossy), you should only transcode when you need to and perform streamcopy otherwise.” See FFmpeg’s streamcopy documentation.

Streamcopy is not a fix for an incompatible codec, a needed resize, or a workflow that requires multiple renditions. Check the destination’s requirements and the playback devices you need to support before choosing it.

Is transcoding the same as encoding or packaging?

Encoding

Encoding compresses media into an encoded representation. Transcoding takes already-encoded media, decodes it, and encodes it again—often with different output settings. The terms are related, but they describe different starting points.

Packaging

Packaging organizes encoded outputs for a delivery format and player. It is related to transcoding, but it is not another name for it. A workflow might encode one or more renditions, then package them for a streaming format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HLS and DASH are examples of streaming formats used to organize media for delivery. Google Cloud documents HLS and DASH outputs in its Transcoder API overview. MPEG describes DASH as usable for both live and on-demand delivery over existing internet infrastructure in its MPEG-DASH overview.

Do you need transcoding for live streaming?

Not necessarily. If your live encoder already sends media in a form the platform or downstream workflow accepts, and no additional processing or renditions are required, another transcode may be unnecessary. If the incoming codec is unsupported, the output must be changed, or viewers need adaptive renditions, conversion may be part of the live workflow.

Managed live processing can accept an incoming feed, convert it, and produce outputs for delivery. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview describes an input endpoint and channel that convert live SRT or RTMP input into HLS or DASH output saved to Cloud Storage. This is an example of a documented service workflow, not a requirement for every live stream.

Local software or managed cloud processing?

The right approach depends on whether the work is live or on-demand, how much pipeline control you need, and who will operate the compute, storage, and delivery components. These examples illustrate different documented workflows; they are not a ranking.

Approach Workload and workflow Useful distinction
Local tools such as FFmpeg Run conversions on compute you provision and operate. FFmpeg documents transcoding and streamcopy, including filters and conversion choices. You are responsible for the local workflow and its resources.
Google Cloud Transcoder API Submit on-demand jobs that write processed outputs to Cloud Storage. Google describes the API as asynchronous and says it does not provide strong timing guarantees, so it is not suited to a user waiting for an immediate result. See the API overview.
Google Cloud Live Stream API Convert live SRT or RTMP input into HLS or DASH output saved to Cloud Storage. It is a documented managed live workflow. See the Live Stream API overview.
Cloudflare Stream Upload, encode to multiple resolutions, and deliver video with adaptive-bitrate streaming. Cloudflare describes these capabilities in its Stream documentation.
AWS with CloudFront and AWS Media Services Use an encoder such as MediaConvert to format and package media for streaming, then deliver it through CloudFront. AWS documents this as a video-on-demand and live-streaming workflow in its CloudFront and Media Services overview.

These services differ in workload, controls, and operating model. Their documentation does not establish comparable prices or performance benchmarks, so choose based on the output formats, latency, processing, and operational responsibilities your workflow actually requires.

How to decide: transcode or copy

  1. Check destination compatibility. Confirm that the destination and intended playback devices support the source codecs and media properties.
  2. List required changes. Identify any resizing, deinterlacing, audio processing, overlays, or other filters.
  3. Decide whether adaptive delivery is needed. If the workflow requires more than one quality rendition, plan for conversion and the appropriate output ladder.
  4. Choose the lightest suitable workflow. Use streamcopy if the source already fits and needs no transformation; transcode only the streams or properties that need to change.
  5. Check delivery separately. Confirm packaging and player requirements as well as the encoded outputs. Transcoding alone does not guarantee smooth playback; bandwidth, packaging, player behavior, and the rest of the workflow matter too.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos playing continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option from a transcoding service: it loops the uploaded videos in the cloud rather than going live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

  • One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps, streamed as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.
  • Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The same features apply on every plan; only the billing length changes.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
