To set up a multi-camera live stream, route each camera feed into either streaming software such as OBS or a hardware video switcher, choose one consistent audio source, then send the resulting program to your encoder and streaming platform. The right setup depends on your cameras’ outputs, how many feeds you need at once, and whether you want to switch shots in software or with physical controls.
Choose how to switch between cameras
Your signal path is camera → software or switcher → encoder → streaming platform. Every camera must reach the production system as a source it can accept. Switching can happen in OBS, or in a hardware switcher that combines the cameras into one program feed for the computer.
Software-first: bring feeds into OBS
OBS uses scenes and sources to build the video layout. Add each camera or capture-device feed as a video capture source, then arrange sources into scenes for full-frame shots, picture-in-picture, or other compositions. OBS’s source guide includes webcams, capture cards, and other video devices among the possible video capture sources. OBS Studio overview · OBS sources guide
Studio Mode shows the current live scene beside a scene you can edit or prepare. That lets an operator check the next composition before taking it live. This approach suits a computer that can accept all the camera feeds and handle the intended production; the documentation cited here does not specify a universal computer requirement, so check your computer and capture interfaces against the number and format of active inputs.

Hardware-first: switch cameras before the computer
A hardware switcher accepts multiple camera feeds and sends a selected program output to the computer or encoder. It can suit a production where the operator wants dedicated physical controls or where consolidating camera inputs simplifies the computer connection. Connector types, input counts, monitoring, and output options vary by model.
Blackmagic Design’s setup guides describe these model-specific examples:

Match the equipment to the production
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Camera signal | Camera output connector and matching capture or switcher input, such as HDMI or SDI | The physical signal path must be compatible. |
| Number of feeds | How many cameras must be connected simultaneously; available switcher inputs or capture interfaces | Input counts vary by switcher, while a software workflow needs a way to capture each feed. |
| Switching method | OBS scenes and sources, or a dedicated switcher’s controls | This determines how the operator prepares and changes shots. |
| Monitoring | Multiview, preview of inputs, or a separate monitor arrangement | The operator needs to identify the next shot. Multiview is model-dependent, not universal. |
| Program output | USB webcam output, capture-device output, or another supported encoder path | This determines how the switched production reaches streaming software or an encoder. |
| Audio | Microphone or mixer feeding the program, with level monitoring and a sync check | Camera cuts should not interrupt or degrade the main audio. |
| Camera consistency | Framing, focus, exposure, lighting, and color across angles | Consistent shots make cuts less distracting. |
Set up and rehearse the stream
- Plan positions and shots. Choose a wide or master view plus useful close-ups or alternate angles. Check that one camera does not block another, and aim for reasonably consistent composition and lighting.
- Choose where switching happens. For OBS, plan how every camera feed will enter the computer, directly or through capture devices. For a switcher, connect each camera to a compatible HDMI or SDI input, then connect the program output to the streaming computer or encoder.
- Build and label the sources. In OBS, create clearly named scenes and sources. With a switcher, label the inputs and arrange the monitoring view so the operator can identify each feed. OBS describes scenes and sources as the core of its layouts; Blackmagic’s guides explain input switching and multiview on selected models.
- Set one deliberate audio path. Decide which microphone or mixer supplies program audio and monitor it while changing camera shots. The cited component guides do not establish a preferred microphone or detailed synchronization procedure, so verify audio and picture together in your own setup.
- Configure the destination encoder. For YouTube encoder streaming, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube describes encoder streaming as using software or a hardware encoder connected to audio and video equipment. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Rehearse the complete chain. Before a public event, test every input, framing, exposure, focus, audio, transitions, overlays, destination, and monitoring view in a private or test session. Check that the view and sound remain correct as you switch among all planned shots.
Common problems and fixes
- A camera does not appear: Check that its output connector matches the capture device or switcher input, that the input is selected, and that the feed is available in the production software. Verify the connection at each point in the camera-to-program path.
- You do not have enough inputs: Count the feeds that must be connected simultaneously and compare that number with the switcher’s inputs or the computer’s capture interfaces before the event. A model’s input count is not interchangeable with another model’s.
- The operator cannot see the next shot: Set up OBS Studio Mode or an available multiview/preview arrangement. Confirm the specific switcher model supports multiview; the cited guides identify it only on selected models.
- Audio changes or becomes unclear during cuts: Check that the intended microphone or mixer is feeding program audio consistently and monitor its level while switching. Test picture and sound together rather than assuming camera switching handles the audio path as intended.
- The stream does not reach YouTube: Recheck the YouTube Live server URL and stream key entered in the encoder, along with the encoder’s selected output and the program feed arriving from OBS or the switcher.
- Cuts look jarring: Compare framing, focus, exposure, and lighting across cameras, then adjust the compositions and camera settings before the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 YouTube channel that plays uploaded videos rather than switching live camera feeds, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It is not a camera-based multi-camera switcher.
