For a new bulk screenshot workflow that needs visual baselines and image-diff assertions, Playwright is the stronger default. Choose Selenium when your existing automation depends on WebDriver or you need Selenium Grid to run browsers remotely across machines. Official documentation does not establish that either framework captures more pages per second; benchmark your own URLs and environment before choosing on throughput.
What “bulk screenshots” means for this choice
Taking images of many URLs can mean a one-time capture job, or a recurring visual-regression pipeline that checks whether pages changed. The distinction matters: Playwright Test documents an integrated screenshot-baseline and comparison workflow, while Selenium Grid’s documented strength is routing WebDriver commands to remote browser instances. Selenium can be paired with separate image-comparison tooling; the Grid documentation is not evidence that Selenium cannot do visual diffs.
If you only need to save images, compare the screenshot APIs and output handling in the language bindings you plan to use. Playwright’s screenshot documentation includes full-page capture, element capture, and returning screenshot bytes for downstream processing: Playwright screenshots. The Selenium Grid documentation describes remote execution rather than a comparable visual-diff assertion API: Selenium Grid.
Playwright vs Selenium at a glance
| Decision | Playwright | Selenium | What to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual baselines and diffs | Playwright Test documents screenshot baselines and toHaveScreenshot(). On the first run it generates a reference; later runs compare against it. Before saving a baseline, it retries capture until two consecutive screenshots match. |
The cited Grid documentation covers remote WebDriver execution, not visual-diff assertions. That does not rule out integrating a separate comparison library. | Do you need repeatable visual-regression checks as well as image files? |
| Parallel capture | Playwright Test uses worker processes, can parallelize test files, supports worker limits, and can enable parallel tests within files. Each worker starts its own browser. | Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browsers and is designed for parallel work across machines. | Is a local worker pool sufficient, or do you need remote browser capacity? |
| Isolation | Workers have isolated BrowserContexts, but shared backend records and shared output paths can still conflict. | The cited Grid page explains remote routing and cross-platform execution; it does not establish application-data isolation behavior. | Can each job use independent data and a unique output path? |
| Rendering consistency | Playwright warns that OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. It supports style injection to suppress volatile page regions. | Grid supports browser-version and platform coverage, useful when those differences are intentional. | Are cross-environment differences the subject of the test, or noise to control? |
When Playwright is the better fit
Choose it for built-in visual-regression checks
Playwright Test gives a direct path from screenshot generation to stored baselines and subsequent comparison using toHaveScreenshot(). This suits recurring checks where a changed screenshot should fail or flag a test, rather than merely producing a folder of images. Baselines are environment-sensitive, so create and compare them under consistent conditions.

Choose it for a worker-based local pipeline
Playwright Test can distribute test files across worker processes and lets you control worker count. That can make it straightforward to fan out a batch of URLs on one host. Parallelism does not automatically make shared resources safe: isolate test data and give each capture its own destination path.
When Selenium is the better fit
Keep Selenium when WebDriver is already central
If your scripts, language bindings, or existing test infrastructure already rely on WebDriver, Selenium avoids rebuilding the workflow around another browser automation framework. Selenium Grid is especially relevant when browser sessions must run on remote machines.

Use Grid for remote and cross-platform execution
Selenium Grid routes commands to remote browser instances and is intended to support parallel execution across machines, browser-version testing, and cross-platform testing. That is useful when the capture job needs browsers distributed beyond a single local worker pool. The Selenium project’s Grid documentation was last modified September 16, 2026: Selenium Grid documentation.
How to benchmark bulk screenshot throughput fairly
No apples-to-apples official benchmark establishes a universal speed, cost, or reliability winner. A meaningful choice requires a workload-specific test rather than extrapolating from feature descriptions.

- Use representative URLs. Include pages with the same mix of heavy assets, authentication, redirects, and dynamic content as the production batch.
- Match the conditions. Keep browser version, host resources, viewport, readiness criteria, and number of concurrent sessions equivalent between runs.
- Measure more than raw speed. Record completed captures per unit time, failure and retry rate, memory use, and visual stability. These are suggested measurements, not published comparative results.
- Test the output semantics. Confirm that full-page or element capture, output format, and any downstream processing meet the pipeline’s requirements in the chosen language binding.
- Repeat the run. Compare repeat runs to distinguish a stable workflow from a result driven by transient network or page behavior.
Keep visual comparisons stable
A screenshot can change even when the application code has not. Playwright identifies host OS, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as possible sources of rendering variation. For regression testing, keep the baseline-generation environment aligned with the comparison environment; for intentional cross-browser testing, treat each target environment as its own comparison context.
- Pin the browser and operating-system environment used to produce and check baselines.
- Stabilize or hide dates, animations, rotating content, ads, and other volatile regions when they are not part of the behavior being tested. Playwright’s visual-comparison workflow supports injecting styles for this purpose.
- Keep baseline files and output paths scoped to the relevant test, browser, and viewport so concurrent runs do not overwrite one another.
See Playwright visual comparisons for baseline behavior, updates, pixel thresholds, and style injection.

Make parallel jobs safe
Parallel workers use separate BrowserContexts, which isolates browser context state, but it does not isolate everything your workflow touches. Two workers can still mutate the same backend record or write to the same image filename.
- Use unique accounts, records, or other backend data per worker where captures can change state.
- Build output names from stable identifiers such as the URL or test case plus the browser and viewport, rather than writing every result to
screenshot.png. - Set a worker limit appropriate to the host or remote grid capacity, then observe failures and memory use while increasing concurrency.
Playwright documents worker configuration and isolation considerations in its parallelism guide.

Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is to get clean screenshots from many pages without maintaining browser workers, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return an image or PDF; for example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step optional. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo and get 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Playwright faster than Selenium for bulk screenshots?
The cited official documentation does not provide an apples-to-apples throughput benchmark. Run both against representative URLs under matched conditions and compare completed captures, failures, memory use, and visual stability.
